Using dogs to sniff out drugs is nothing new, but using them to smuggle drugs is a whole other story. Federal agents at New York's Drug Enforcement Administration say a Colombian Drug Cartel has surgically implated heroin into dogs and transporting them to Miami and New York
A two year investigation led to the arrests of 22 Colombian Nationals, some who swallowed heroin capsules as human smugglers, others who hid drugs in aerosol cans or double-sided luggage. Ten Lab puppies were found to have more than 20 kilograms of heroin surgically implanted.
"It's an outrageous smuggling method, to place packets of heroin in the bellies of live puppies," said John Gilbride, Head of the DEA's New York office.
Three of the puppies used to smuggle drugs died from infections. The other seven were rescued and we are told they will be found good homes.
