The Bay Area, an area known for: its diversity, endless talent, hard work, and dedication, has certainly played an important role in the rap industry. Legends such as Too Short, E-40, Spice One, and many more have solidified the Bay Area as a powerhouse in the independent rap scene and a place not to be overlooked. Another unique aspect of the Bay is the introduction of the rap compilation to the world. Albums such as Master P’s “West Coast Bad Boyz” and Herm’s “Trying to Survive in the Ghetto” showcased several rap acts on one album. The concept of the compilation to the Bay not only set a trend among other areas of the United States, but unfortunately also flooded the market of such albums.
Lost in the chaos of the compilation craze, stood out one compilation, Black and Brown Entertainment’s “17 Reasons”. An album with an all-star line up of rappers bringing two minorities together, blacks and latinos. Combined with top-notch lyrics and on point production, “17 Reasons” is among the elite of classic Bay albums.

)“Drought Season” Cellski, San Quinn, and B-Legit. Production by Cellski. The track alone speaks for itself, this song is straight fire. All three rappers hold their own and set the tone of the album. 10/10

)“Everyday Thang In The Bay” Guce. Production by Guce. More of a laid back track, something to mob to at night. Pretty self-explanatory track. Another hot one. 8/10

)“The Proffesional” Marvaless, Buddah Mack, and San Quinn. Production by Messy Marv. Two females bringing heat to the mic. Marvaless absolutely rips it up on this one. Buddah Mack is impressive and holds her own. San Quinn on the chorus wasn’t really necessary but still an ill track. 8/10

)“Take Me Higher” Don Cisco. Produced by Don Cisco. A pretty mellow track and something to mob to. Production was above average and the lyrics were ight. The Mac Mall sample during the chorus is dope. 8/10

)“Sideways” Coolio, Down For Brown, Baby Beesh, and Young Neen. Production by Johnny Z. A dope ass cut. Another self-explanatory track. All the rappers hold their own and none come weak. Production is superb. 9/10

)“Sav Shit” Coolio, San Quinn, and Messy Marv. Production by Coolio. I’ll admit, I wasn’t really feeling this song the first time I heard it butt then it grew on me. Coolio’s production needs a little getting use to. 7/10

)“Black and Brown” JT the Bigga Figga and Louie Loc. Production by JT the Bigga Figga. Another slow track. An alright track.7/10

)“Scootie 15” Andre Nickatina. Production by DJ Pause. If you never heard this song, you must be living under a rock. One of the best Nickatina songs. This song hella knocks! 10/10

)“This Game” Seff tha Gaffla. Production by TC and Reggie. A more up tempo track. Seff spits some cold verses and Quinn handles some of the chorus. Dope track. 8/10

)“Power and the Pain” Cougnut and Bladhead Rick. Production by Guce. These two artists brought together is a guaranteed knock. My favorite cut on the album. Lyrics were dope as fuck and production was ill. Where ever you at make this knock! 10/10

)“Cresidahz” Mac Dre, Coolio, PSD, and Dubee. Production by Coolio. Dope posse cut reppin the Crestside of the Valley Joe. Tight cut.8/10

)“Dedicated 2 the Riches” San Quinn, Messy Marv, and Mac Dre. Production by Coolio. Second favorite song on the album. Mac Dre steals the spotlight on this track. And if you listen closey theres a small E-40 diss. “Cause I got more game then a Grambling scholar.” 9/10

)“No Mercy, No Pain” Playa P and OC Dre. Production by TC, Reggie, and Race. The first song I wasn’t feeling. 5/10

)“Northside Soldier” Mousie. Production by JT. A slow, story telling track. I remember hearing this song always played in my high school. This is like the Norte anthem. Above average track. 7/10

)“Thangs Aint Going to Change” Big Mack and Miru. Production by TC,Reggie, and Race. Alright track, nothing spectacular. 7/10

)“Player in You” Messy Marv. Production by John Orr and Vincent Franklin. A Babyface sample. Another mellow track. Its sorta weird how Mess would be rappin a song like this since he always talking down on girls. Still a tight track. 9/10

)“17 Reasons” 11/5. Production by John Orr and Vincent Franklin. Perfect way to end an album with one of Frisco’s rawest groups. Favorite verse has to be by Maine-O.10/10

“17 Reasons” is a prime example of how a compilation should be. Lyrics and production meshed well together. Its no wonder this album sold over 60,000 copies.

The best compilation to come out of the bay ever. I wish Black N Brown would have stuck with this format and style with some of their new ventures. This and 18 Wit a Bullet were classic.
