just cuz it's over rated doesn't mean it's bad. just means you're jocking it waaaaaaaay too much.

the whole: "look my camera is bouncing around and the color quality is shitty so that means my movie is independent so you should like it" style was clown shoes when it started and now it's seriously played out.

i can see this being a little bit more entertaining if people have no idea of brazilian favela history and life style, but still not that much more.

most entertaining part of the movie and the part that was most gangsta was the historical irony at the end of the movie which is lost on the average american.

the little kid gang at the end that kills dude, as they are walking away they are talking about the gang they are going to form and what they are going to call it. they say they are going to call it C V or Comando Vermelhio (in english the gang is called Red Command). this in present day Rio and most of brazil is the most bad ass gang that runs shit. an american gang banger could get slapped in the face and not understand the gangsta of the CV. They run places that the country’s army won’t even go near.

when the coolest part of the movie is 30 seconds at the end of the movie = over rated

this movie:

not that gangsta
not that interesting
annoying cinematic style

thus it's quite over rated to see people jock it so hard especially on the basis of its gangsta (which is lacking)

** waits for two people in the entire siccness that can explain well how this movie is sooooo gangsta, sooooo interesting, and is soooooo cinematicly appealing. **

everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but . . .
some people enjoy movies like From Justin to Kelly or You Got Served and if they find it entertaining that's one thing, but i don't think they'd be able to explain how those movies are gangsta, interesting, or a well made movie. not that i'm saying city of god should be compaired to those movies(i thought it was aight), but it also shouldn't be jocked like it's a classic either. because just as compairing city of god to some crap ass movie is an injustice; calling city of god classic does an injustice to classic films.

ColdBlooded, Do you know of any books, or websites, that can explain what life in Brazilian favela's is like? Learning about life in South America has always interested me. So Much crazy shit has happened on that continent.

let me look back and see if i have any around here.

I learned mostly about it through my portuguese teacher who lived in one in Rio and from a latin american politics professor who's focus is Brazilian politics.

coldblooded, when you say something is overrated, that implies that it gets much more credit than it should. both city of god and donnie darko are movies that relatively did not get much attention nationally therefore to call them "overrated" would mean they are complete crap.

I now understand what you mean, but when you use "overrated" in instances like this most people are going to take it differently than you intended. I would reccomend you say something more like "I dont think it is as good as everyone is saying" or even just "its not as good as everyone is saying"

Hope they elaborate a lil more on things for you.

I'm an international relations major with a focus on latin america so that's where the LA knowledge comes from.

Is there a particular part of history you want to learn about? Or a certain country?

Kinda hard to recomend a good book that cover's all of Latin America's history. But there are lots of good ones about people, countries, or social movements/periods of time.
