Paul Gutierrez's Insider Take
Kansas City 28, Raiders 0
Was it Hue-bris?: Not for one minute did I believe Hue Jackson's dog-and-pony show all week that he was going to wait until after a "massage" and some "Irish Coffee" to make a decision on who his starting quarterback would be against the Chiefs. But if that was indeed the case, then the rookie coach did his team a terrible disservice. It was obvious Kyle Boller needed all the work he could get, then again, it might not have mattered with how poorly Boller performed. The spidey senses say that Jackson knew all along Boller would start but he tried to get too cute through the media. And if he truly waited, that time would have been better served committing to a starter and giving him 98 percent of the reps.
Too many tricks?: It also said here last week that all three quarterbacks could see action against the Chiefs, that Jackson might get cute with some offensive machinations. And on the third play of the game, on 3rd and 1, Terrelle Pryor lined up on the left as a receiver, went in motion and, with Boller in the shotgun, stopped under center. He took the snap and rushed forward for the first down but was called for a false start. One play later, Boller threw a pick-six. Ballgame.
Bad Boller, Poor Palmer: How magnanimous were Boller and Palmer? Not even JaMarcus Russell threw three interceptions in the first half. You'd have to go back to 1998 and Donald Hollas. And the last Raiders QB to throw three picks in a second half? Andrew Walter in 2006.
Perfect storm: While predicting a Raiders victory this week, I also told anyone who would listen that if Jackson and the Raiders got too cute, they just might look up and find themselves down 21-3. Ineffective QB play, questionable play-calling and a filthy injury big did the Raiders in. Call it a Perfect Storm on a day the Raiders wished they had a do-over.
