Browns trade Frye to Seahawks

Associated Press

BEREA, Ohio -- Browns starting quarterback Charlie Frye, benched before halftime in the season opener, was traded to Seattle on Tuesday, a stunningly swift move as Cleveland clears the way for rookie Brady Quinn.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter is reporting that the Browns will receive a sixth-round draft from the Seahawks.

Frye was dealt less than 48 hours after playing poorly and being pulled in the second quarter by coach Romeo Crennel for backup Derek Anderson in the Browns' 34-7 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Browns said Frye must pass a physical for the trade to be completed. Cleveland also signed free agent quarterback Ken Dorsey, cut 10 days ago by the club, to a one-year contract.

Amid the changes, the Browns have not named a starter for Sunday's home game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The team has several options, including allowing Quinn, the former Notre Dame four-year star, to make his NFL debut.

The team planned to make general manager Phil Savage available Tuesday afternoon to discuss the moves.

Frye, who made 13 starts last season and five as a rookie in 2005, beat out Anderson during a drawn-out competition that began during the off-season and carried through training camp and the preseason.

Less than two weeks ago, Browns general manager Phil Savage said "let's see what Charlie can do with a full deck" this season.

It took less than 20 minutes on Sunday for the club to decide Frye was no longer in their plans.

He went 4-of-10 for 34 yards with an interception -- a QB rating of 10.0 -- and was sacked five times by the Steelers before Crennel yanked him. Frye's departure could push Quinn up the depth chart.

The Browns want to bring their high-profile first-round pick along slowly, but their timetable may have been sped up following their eighth straight loss to the Steelers, dropping Crennel's record against AFC North teams to 1-12.

Quinn was Cleveland's No. 3 quarterback against the Steelers, but he's already No. 1 in the minds of Browns fans, who began chanting "Bra-dy," "Bra-dy" following another bad throw by Frye in the second quarter Sunday.

Cleveland traded a 2008 first-round pick to Dallas in April's draft and used the No. 22 overall pick on Quinn, who set 36 passing records for the Fighting Irish.

Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren had been looking for a backup for quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. Seneca Wallace filled that role in Sunday's opener against Tampa Bay, but Seattle would rather use him as a wide receiver and punt returner.

When he was still with the Browns, Dorsey served as a mentor for Quinn, who missed 16 practices during a contract holdout and was absent when the Browns installed sections of their offense under new coordinator Rob Chudzinski.

Dorsey, who played under Chudzinski at the University of Miami, could start Sunday at home against the Bengals or serve as a backup if the Browns want to take another look at Anderson - or start Quinn.

Frye, the Browns third-round draft choice out of Akron in 2005, had a 6-13 record as a starter over three seasons and threw for 3,490 yards with 14 touchdowns and 23 interceptions for a 71.1 QB rating.

He grew up a Browns fan in Willard in northern Ohio and had a poster of Bernie Kosar on his bedroom wall.

I’m scratching my head on this one.

Quinn was gonna be the No. 1 guy…we all knew that…but I would have really liked to see him sit back and learn for a little bit. If he goes out there and gets killed…it’s Tim Couch all over again.

I don’t understand this…ALL OFFSEASON…ALL PRE-SEASON…Frye wins the job. Now…after a quarter and a half he’s gone.

If he’s not the guy…so be it. But to have him start…yank him…and then trade him after the first game? This should have been done a long time ago.

I really don't know about Fisher. He was a solid dude and you can never have too many defensive lineman. I suspect that since he didn't make the starting job, seattle and fisher talked about whats best for him and decided he could start for another team. Seattle has a couple of young guys that they want to be future starters regardless. I dunno.

As for Frye, heres my theory - they are worried about the Hackett injury and want to have another WR. They would like to move Seneca Wallace as WR which they couldn't due w/o another QB, hence getting Frye.

They like Atkins and Babin and want them to run free...bye-bye Fisher.
Fisher would have to go on the inavtice list for that to happen, so they traded him instead. Plus, it freed room for Frye, apearntly.

How is Seneca any better than Courtney or Obamanu (which showed greatness again in preseason)??? That woudnt make any sense to move him to WR. It has been stated that Frye is the third string and Seneca is still the #2.

Here is the quote:

"With the Seahawks, Frye will be the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart, behind starter Matt Hasselbeck and primary backup Seneca Wallace, who recently signed a contract extension. The Seahawks have been seeking another veteran quarterback since releasing David Greene in the final cutdown to the 53-player roster."

well maybe not this season but possibly next season. Holmgren has always expressed his feelings about Senica's talent and has said he would like to see him as WR, Punt/Kick returner. He'll be number 2 this year and give Frye a chance to learn the playbook, next year Frye will be #2, Wallace #3 which will allow Seattle to utilize his talent in more creative ways. IMO

That's the only logical explanation I can come up with. If not, then I don't know wtf they are thinking.

Yeah, the Browns seem pretty stupid.

What I would do is have Frye start, let Quinn sit back for a year and learn the system. If you suck ass as a team, so what? It will be better in the long run. Quinn can start next year, plus they will have another very high draft pick, possibly #1 or #2. If they start Quinn any time soon, they just might fuck him up for life.

^^ well i read somewhere about holmgren tryna find a "niche" for seneca wallace since hasselback will be startin all the time, and holmgren knows seneca can do thangs and hes athletic enough. I may of heard it during a game last year when seneca was starting when matt was hurt... either way, seattle has been tryna find a quality 2nd string QB and frye aint a bad 2nd string qb...

looks like the brady quinn era is gonna start soon over in cleveland.

I personally think it was a good move on Seattle's part. Ever since Seneca has been in Seattle they've been talking about how he could be one of the best WR in the league if he could play there, same thing as a return guy. I have no doubt that we'll see Seneca playing other positions if not this year then definitely next. Who knows they might be bringing in Frye to relieve Hasselbeck in 2 or 3 years (probably not). Either way I think it was a good move.

As far as Fischer....WTF? I always like him as a player, and like 2-0-Sixx said he's a local guy and he's an Air Force guy. That was definintely a gay move on Seattle's part.

^ oh ya, dont get me wrong.. i totally agree with u on that.. i was just tryna correct your statement with the browns gettin a good pick next year in the 1st round.. thats all... Its a lot better for a qb to sit out, look at carson palmer..
