Restricted free agent wide receiver Malcom Floyd signed his one-year contract offer Friday and will be at Chargers Park when the team begins Offseason Coaching Sessions Monday.
When the Chargers begin their Offseason Coaching Sessions Monday morning, Malcom Floyd will be in attendance.
The big-play wide receiver has been absent from the team’s offseason activities to this point, but on Friday, Floyd signed the one-year contract tender the team offered the restricted free agent.
“I just can’t describe how good it feels to be back with the guys,” Floyd said. “I’ve stressed about the contract stuff for a while, but I’m glad it’s all over. I’m ready to go to work.”
With the business issues taken care of, Floyd is glad he can now focus on football.
“You want to make sure that you’re doing what’s best for you and your family,” Floyd said, “but at the same time I knew I was missing out by not being here. It’s been hard being away for a month and a half with everything going on.
“I didn’t see any positives about sitting out any more. We’ve got to get things rolling, get the timing down with Philip. I’m glad that I’m not thinking about (the contract situation) any more. I just want to concentrate on getting ready for this season and doing everything I can to help the Chargers be successful.”
For the past two months, Floyd has been working out with a personal trainer. While he’s confident in where he’s at physically, he’s missed being at Chargers Park.
“It’s just a habit being here this time of year working with everyone,” Floyd said. “It has been for six years. Even though I’ve done the things necessary to get in top shape physically, it’s been hard because I was thinking about my teammates working out together without me. We’re going to see this Monday how it carries over, but I feel great.”
In 2008, his third full season on the 53-man squad after two years on the practice squad, Floyd posted career highs with 27 receptions, 465 yards and four touchdowns. He averaged and impressive 17.2 yards per catch.
After signing his deal Friday morning, Floyd made his way around the locker room and enthusiastically greeted several of his teammates who he hadn’t seen in a while.
“It was great to see all my teammates and all the coaches,” Floyd said. “I get more confident every year and with a good offseason I think I can continue to build on what I’ve accomplished.”
