Floyd signs tender, will attend offseason practices

Posted May 15, 2009

Restricted free agent wide receiver Malcom Floyd signed his one-year contract offer Friday and will be at Chargers Park when the team begins Offseason Coaching Sessions Monday.
When the Chargers begin their Offseason Coaching Sessions Monday morning, Malcom Floyd will be in attendance.

The big-play wide receiver has been absent from the team’s offseason activities to this point, but on Friday, Floyd signed the one-year contract tender the team offered the restricted free agent.

“I just can’t describe how good it feels to be back with the guys,” Floyd said. “I’ve stressed about the contract stuff for a while, but I’m glad it’s all over. I’m ready to go to work.”

With the business issues taken care of, Floyd is glad he can now focus on football.

“You want to make sure that you’re doing what’s best for you and your family,” Floyd said, “but at the same time I knew I was missing out by not being here. It’s been hard being away for a month and a half with everything going on.

“I didn’t see any positives about sitting out any more. We’ve got to get things rolling, get the timing down with Philip. I’m glad that I’m not thinking about (the contract situation) any more. I just want to concentrate on getting ready for this season and doing everything I can to help the Chargers be successful.”

For the past two months, Floyd has been working out with a personal trainer. While he’s confident in where he’s at physically, he’s missed being at Chargers Park.

“It’s just a habit being here this time of year working with everyone,” Floyd said. “It has been for six years. Even though I’ve done the things necessary to get in top shape physically, it’s been hard because I was thinking about my teammates working out together without me. We’re going to see this Monday how it carries over, but I feel great.”

In 2008, his third full season on the 53-man squad after two years on the practice squad, Floyd posted career highs with 27 receptions, 465 yards and four touchdowns. He averaged and impressive 17.2 yards per catch.

After signing his deal Friday morning, Floyd made his way around the locker room and enthusiastically greeted several of his teammates who he hadn’t seen in a while.

“It was great to see all my teammates and all the coaches,” Floyd said. “I get more confident every year and with a good offseason I think I can continue to build on what I’ve accomplished.”

Ex-Aztec Dombrowski moves to front of the line for the moment

Monday, May 18, 2009

Receiver Malcom Floyd, who signed a one-year contract worth $1.54 million last week, was impressive Monday, the first day of offseason coaching sessions. (Howard Lipin/Union-Tribune) - Good thing it's only May.

Good thing for the Chargers and good thing for Brandyn Dombrowski – because that was Dombrowski working with the first team at left tackle Monday on the opening day of offseason coaching sessions.

It was part fill-in, part audition for the guard out of San Diego State, who played about a half-dozen collegiate snaps at tackle. As Dombrowski took part in drills alongside Pro Bowl guard Kris Dielman, starter Marcus McNeill and backup L.J. Shelton worked on the side rehabbing injuries that shouldn't keep them out come summertime.

What Dombrowski can accomplish for himself is perhaps solidifying a roster spot. What he can do for the Chargers is provide a versatile option.

“Anything you can do to help you make the team, you're going to do it,” said Dombrowski, an undrafted free agent in 2008 who spent last season on the practice squad.

Dombrowski worked as an opposing tackle in practice last season. With hard work over the next three-plus months, he believes he could be a viable backup by the start of the season.

With a number of tricky roster decisions to make each Sunday, the more positions a lineman can play, the better his chances of being on the roster and being active.

“He's a versatile guy,” coach Norv Turner said of the 6-foot-5, 323-pound Dombrowski. “It helps him a lot.”

Looking for Mo

Kevin Burnett worked mostly with the third team in the Chargers'base defense but did take a few snaps with the first team. Burnett, who as a free agent signed a two-year deal with almost $5 million guaranteed, was with the first team when the defense was in sub packages.

Burnett being on the field on passing downs is almost a given come September. Whether it will be he, Tim Dobbins or Matt Wilhelm at “Mo” linebacker in the base defense remains to be seen.

“We have to find out if he's an every-down player,” defensive coordinator Ron Rivera said. “And we have to find out if other guys are every-down players.”

Nuts 'n' Bolts

Malcom Floyd was back in form Monday, his first practice with the team after sitting out minicamp because he had not signed his contract. Floyd made a number of fantastic catches.

Turner has been highly complimentary of tight end Kris Wilson, whose emergence on special teams and at tight end late in the season hastened the release of Scott Chandler. Said Turner: “He's having a very strong offseason.”

Receiver Buster Davis, the 2007 first-round pick who has been severely slowed by injuries, is noticeably bigger. The hope would be that the bulk will translate into sustained health.

ok....When lil Malcom was born, Floyd (Dad) told my dude Malcolm (older brother) that he could name the newborn, so he named him after himself. hahaha

the original surname is Seabron, but they changed it to Floyd when Dad passed away.

the youngest son Sam is a beast too. he's in JC right now
