Imma bout to release this cd (nah, not the JT and Aloewishish cd, hahahah) but a legit cd and i just wanna know what's the minimum things i should do to make the disc legal and offical. i.e. copyrighting beats and lyrics, credits on the disc, etc, etc. pretty much i wanna cover my ass from all directions if something was to pop up. i know theirs alot of industry cats on this board so if you could drop some of ya knowledge on here i'd appreciate it.

that gonna take some time to type up...do a search on the net for "how to release my cd" or "how to release my music"
or "how to make a record"

you askin someone to do a lot of typing,

heres a few

copywrite all work...all of it...even if you dont use it immedialty
give credit where credits due
get a bar code
publishing ..check it out.
get a business license....
get a contract signed by everyone involved....decide who get what early on...saves you trouble later
remember nothin is free in the music business
graphics and promo material is key....spread the word.

puttin out a cd is more than just recording music and gettin it pressed.....its a time consuming business and takes a lot more than you might think...ask anyone who ever had to shelf a project due to lack of funding, and the millions of cats that got them pressed and barely sold 200 copies.....
i would strong advise you to take the album to your friends.....your family.....as well as other people that you dont know and tell them to give you an honest opinion about the music...ask them if they think you should release it,
We got a flood thats slowly declining but the deep water of bay area rap is too much sometimes...too many rapper that cant rap....rhyming aint rappin, anyone can rhyme, few can rap.....

We dont need another Kobesoz.....point blank period.

Homie, copywrite your work, then post the albums mp3's (snippets) on this board and let the cats of BART decide if it should be released...

If the title of your album is that Scoliosis Jones Sicker than majic Johjnson shit, please drop all thoughts of releasing it under that title....its controversial in the wrong way homie...IMHO i aint feelin the title or name , but hey, i am probably one of the toughest critics on this board and anyone will vouch for that.....

anyone else wanna finish this off.....

right on for the knowledge...that was some helpful shit right there.

hahhaa, nah, that ain't gonna be my album title. that's on some 'ol fuck around shit. Aloeishish ain't my stage name either. that's also on some fuck around shit. i'll let the BART board listen to some shit once i get it copyrighted.

the music is on point though. i wouldn't put my hard earned money into it if i didn't have atleast a small fanbase.

thanks for tiring out ya hand and typing all that.

anything else folks??

Dope thread man. I got another question to add. Everyone says to always have the proper paperwork. Do you guys all have attornies that get the contracts together for you or do you have some basic contracts that you can modify according to the situation. I'm talking about contracts such as selling exclusive rights to a beat or song or for a feature etc... I couldnt afford to get a lawyer so I got a program online that has over 100 different music contracts but they dont really break it down in plain english. Everything is very detailed with all the legal mumbo jumbo and some of these contracts seem very similar. The mechanical rights contract seems to be the closest thing to what I'm looking for (selling exclusive rights to a beat) but I'm not positive if its the right one. Now break yourself and drop some info. LoL!

My advice is to go pick up a book... Learn the basics. Instead of askin questions like the one ones you are askin, ask for the title of books that will give you the answers to all the questions you've asked and more.
Example:
Everything You'd Better Know About The Record Industry
By: Kashif (Great Book)

right on tact....i'm already ascaped...waitin for my card as we speak.

anything else besides gettin ascaped i should look out for???
I'm an ASCAP artist, and I'll tell you straight up they can't really do anything for you legally except licensing and what not. If you are a published ARTIST only, you can't even publish your songs until you create or hook up with a publishing COMPANY...for example, 2Pac's publishing company was called JOSHUA'S DREAM!!

So yea, the only good thing about being a published artist is the benefits and the discounts. But until you do the COMPANY thing, nobody can license your music cause it won't be published.

I do know what I'm talkin about cause I tried to publish my songs and the fuckers wouldn't let me.

Oh, and go copyright your shit. Go to http://www.loc.gov/copyright/ and download the form SR for Sound Recording. Shit's like $35 for whatever...read the directions thoroughly cause it can be tricky if you don't know the language!!
