(07-02) 13:20 PDT SAN BRUNO -- A high school band and music teacher is to be arraigned today on multiple felony charges for allegedly having sex with a 17-year-old female student in a relationship that lasted for months, San Mateo County prosecutors said.
Adam Albrecht, 28, faces 16 felony counts of oral copulation with a minor and 16 felony counts of unlawful sexual intercourse after he allegedly began a sexual relationship with one of his students in February, Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. The relationship apparently lasted until June, Wagstaffe said.
Albrecht, who teachers band, choir and orchestra at Capuchino High School, will appear in a Redwood City courtroom, where he also will be charged with attempting to dissuade a witness, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and contributing to the delinquency of a minor for allegedly providing the girl with alcohol and marijuana, Wagstaffe said.
Albrecht faces up to about 30 years in prison if convicted as charged, Wagstaffe said, adding, "not that we're seeking that."
Albrecht was arrested Thursday at his Broadmoor home and is being held in San Mateo County jail on $500,000 bail.
Albrecht will be charged only with conduct that allegedly occurred from February through May, when the student turned 18 years old, Wagstaffe said.
The situation came to the attention of police after the student's mother discovered "numerous calls and text messages in the cell phone bill to the band teacher," Wagstaffe said.
The mother confronted her daughter, which led the criminal investigation, Wagstaffe said.
