Can someone escape hell???

When I was more spiritual than I am now, my opinion on Hell was a lot more solid.
I believed that "Hell" was the span of time after death where a soul was cleansed, and that time could be either a few seconds or thousands of years depending on the 'enlightening' that needed to happen.
But then I think to myself.. Why about those who only committed atrocities, or foul acts because of imbalances in their chemical make up? Why would they be punished? Why would someone created to be a certain way be punished?
Hell could be anything, but I simply cannot believe that a benevolent creator could punish a mortal creature for an eternity for even a lifetime of mistakes. Because what is a lifetime compared to eternity..? I cannot fathom that. Sins, no matter how grievous, should not exclude a soul from their loved ones for eternity.
My idea of Heaven includes everyone that I love, and so Hell cannot exist forever for those who have made mistakes. Because, in all seriousness, the list of people I love has a few sinners on it.
If there were a God, I don't imagine that he would horribly punish his children for an eternity for a few mistakes made in the blink of an eye that we call our lifetime.
If I am to be spiritual, and believe in something, I need to believe in something hopeful. I can't cling to an angry, vengeful god.

whats your point here? All my point is...is that Christians as a whole take what they want or what sounds good...and go with it.
