Bill Callahan has been hired as the new Nebraska head coach, at least two outlets are reporting.

'Huskers take easy route with Callahan'

The former Oakland Raiders coach took the job Thursday night, according to the Omaha World-Herald's website. The hiring would end a sometimes rambling search that lasted 41 days.

Nebraska hadn't conducted a coaching search in 40 years but seemingly has landed only its fourth coach since 1961. Callahan, 47, would replace Frank Solich, who was fired Nov. 28.

Interim coach Bo Pelini and quarterbacks coach Turner Gill were interviewed by athletic director Steve Pederson on Wednesday.
