Sergio Martinez Denies Announcing His Retirement

Former two division world champion Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez (51-3-2, 28KOs) has denied reports in Argentina which claim the fighter has announced his retirement from boxing.

Martinez, 40-years-old and inactive since last year's June knockout loss to Miguel Cotto, has been dealing with severe knee injuries since 2013.

The former champion does not deny taking part in the overseas interview, but says his comments were taken out of context and made to appear as if he had announced his retirement.

"I have not announced any retirement. I did not confirm anything. They took my words out of context," Martinez said.

In the interview, Martinez discussed his injury and continuing to deal with the physical issues.

"I am a boxer, my knee is shattered. I am 40 years old, I`m getting wrinkles and my hair is falling out," Martinez was quoted as saying in Argentina`s La Nacion daily on Monday.

"I`ve already made up my mind, but in a few weeks I will have a final meeting with doctors and make my announcement then."

It's been said that Martinez may step in the ring for a final time, before his loyal fans in Argentina, as a goodbye fight.

NEW YORK - The boxing blockbuster event, Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao, shattered the previous record for total pay-per-view buys and now ranks as the highest-grossing pay-per-view of all time. Initial reports from distributors indicate that the event generated more than 4.4 million U.S. buys and more than $400 million in domestic pay-per-view revenue alone. With additional revenue from the live gate at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, international television distribution, sponsorships, closed circuit and merchandise sales, the event is expected to generate in excess of $500 million in gross worldwide receipts. The news was announced jointly by Showtime Networks Inc., a subsidiary of CBS Corporation, and HBO in conjunction with event promoters Mayweather Promotions and Top Rank, Inc.

The welterweight world championship unification bout nearly doubled the previous record of 2.48 million buys generated by the Oscar De La Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather boxing event in 2007 and nearly tripled the record $150 million in U.S. pay-per-view revenue generated by Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez in 2013.

Live gate receipts for the star-studded event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena produced more than $71 million in revenue, dramatically eclipsing the previous live gate record of $20 million (for Mayweather vs. Canelo) for both the sport of boxing and Las Vegas.

Additionally, Mayweather vs. Pacquiao set the record for closed circuit admissions and revenue both in Las Vegas and at establishments nationwide. The event sold nearly 46,000 closed circuit admissions at MGM Resorts International properties in Las Vegas alone and was available at more than 5,000 bars, restaurants and commercial establishments throughout the U.S.

Distributed in 175 countries worldwide, Mayweather vs. Pacquiao was available in essentially 75 percent of the world’s territories, setting the revenue record for international distribution.

As reported last week, Mayweather vs. Pacquiao drew enormous numbers on social media. For example, Facebook reported that 37 million unique people contributed more than 115 million interactions from the start of the event to 30 minutes following its completion, a new record for a boxing event.

The May 2 promotion included unprecedented marketing and cross-promotional support from distributors as well as record revenue from the event’s major sponsors

Thurman: Pacquiao is no longer second or third best at welterweight

“To me, Manny Pacquiao is no longer second best,” Thurman told Fighthype. “He’s no longer third best. I don’t know where they could put him. We’ve seen the formula to beat Pacquiao many times, and I think there are several welterweights that could go toe-to-toe with Pacquiao and actually beat him,” Thurman said.

“I think Pacquiao holds the high rank out of respect for all that he’s done in his career,” Thurman. “But I do see him not having too many more fights.”

Doesnt Spence fight at 154?? Way to big for Broner if that happens. Broner shouldnt even be at 147 let alone 154 atleast not yet. I mean even the Porter fight is at a catchweight. They dont know what to do with Broner I see. He should be trying to fight cats in the 140 division until he is ready to go back up to 147. cats like Garcia, Peterson, etc......Got Em!!

WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (32-0, 29KOs) is very interested in facing Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (45-1-1, 32KOs) in the near future.

Canelo saw action last Saturday night in Houston, where he knocked out James Kirkland in three rounds. Golovkin is back on Saturday night, when he defends his world titles against once-beaten Willie Monroe Jr. (19-1, 6KOs) at The Forum in Los Angeles, California.

Golovkin says a fight with Canelo would be the biggest fight for the two of them.

"Yes, absolutely [it would be a war]....Mexican style. This is the biggest deal for us. Biggest fight for us. I think this is a great fight for fans," Golovkin told BoxingScene.com.

Golovkin was not surprised with Canelo's destruction of Kirkland.

"Kirkland is perfect for Canelo. His style and speed, he's perfect for Canelo. I expected [that outcome], of course. He's a champion, a great guy," Golovkin. "At 160 its a different speed, different power, different style."

Canelo plans to return in September and his desire firmly set on a bout with WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, who defends next month against Daniel Geale. Golovkin is the mandatory challenger to Cotto.

Two years?!?! Fuck that cross dressing ho. The boxing world wants Canelo vs GGG NOW, or at least after Canelo vs Cotto so no later than May 2016. GGG just can't sit and wait for two years he's waited his whole career to finally get into that position.

If I'm GGG's team, I'd tell Cotto fuck your step aside money we are taking our mandatory shot now. Cotto will then be forced to vacate his belt if not fight Golovkin, and that at least will screw the Cotto vs Canelo fight over a tiny bit without any belts on the line, I mean that's Cotto's entire leverage over guys is his belt.

Lomachenko v Walters unification planned for October

WBO world featherweight champion Ukrainian boxer Vasyl Lomachenko intends to hold a unification bout. It is planned that he will enter the ring in October, Egis Klimas told "R-Sport".

"The contract we have until the end of the year is to have one more fight - the plan for that is sometime in October. The promoter and television say that it makes sense to meet with Jamaican boxer Nicholas Walters. We look forward to as carry out this battle with Walters. Vasyl wants to unite the titles and we will make a start on this, "- said Klimas by phone.

After the fight with Rodriguez media reported that the Ukrainian injured his right hand in a fight.
"Vasyl had nice fight. All were satisfied by the Vasyl fight, the audience got a lot of good feelings from his match. As for his hands, he just hits hard - like a horse hoof ... We went to the doctor, took pictures - just bruises, which are on any boxer. No fractures or cracks, just boxing-beaten hands. He feels great "- said Klimas.

According to the manager, Lomachenko will rest and recover for about a month. "Lomachenko went home to Ukraine a couple of days after the fight. He's there now resting at home (for serious training) in the near future does not plan to come back. I think he will rest somewhere until mid-June," - he added.

Pacquiao Turns His Back on Mayweather's 'Coward' Jab

Manny Pacquiao has refused to engage Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a war of words, after the latter called him a coward and a sore loser for stating that a right shoulder injury hindered his performance in their May 2nd showdown, which Pacquiao lost by way of a twelve round unanimous decision.

''I refuse to comment on that. If I fire back I would stoop to his level,'' Pacquiao said.

Mayweather is not alone. Some of Pacquiao's own countryman have attacked him for not disclosing a pre-existing injury, which the fighter first revealed during a post-fight press conference. Pacquiao is not happy that some of his Filipino fans are hurling insults in his direction.

''They should show that they are real Filipinos. We should not practice crab mentality. If you are a Filipino, you should support your fellow Filipino,'' he said.

Pacquiao also told local reporters that he views the loss to Mayweather as a victory, because he believes that he led the pound-for-pound king to God.

“This is the first time that he [Mayweather] is thanking God before and after the fight,” Pacquiao said.

Man I dont like that Broner is fighting Porter lol. I like both fighters but of course I like Broner more but its a very tough fight. Oh well if Broner is gonna rise up he has to fight guys like this so lets see. Got Em!!

Don't worry, Broner is draining him to 144 pounds with a rehydration clause in there as well. Porter was at 154 not long ago and when he has been fighting at 147 he's always rehydrated like 15 pounds so he'll likely be pretty weakened.
