Roc Nation sets first boxing card
Updated: December 9, 2014, 12:06 PM ET

Music superstar Jay Z's Roc Nation Sports, which announced its entrance into boxing promotion in August, is set to put on its first card.

The company announced Tuesday that it has reached an agreement for three cards to be televised on Fox Sports 1, with the first card of the series -- given the name "Throne Boxing" by Jay Z -- set for Jan. 9 at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York.

"All of us at Roc Nation Sports are thrilled to announce our first boxing event along with our first series and television deal," said David Itskowitch, the chief operating officer of Roc Nation Sports' boxing division. "An evening of exciting fights, great music and fantastic entertainment will be a fitting way to kick off Throne Boxing, a series that will stand alone on the boxing landscape."

Welterweight prospect Dusty Hernandez-Harrison will fight Tommy Rainone in the featured bout of Roc Nation Sports' first boxing card, to be held on Jan. 9.
The card will be headlined by welterweight prospect Dusty Hernandez-Harrison (24-0, 13 KOs), of Washington, D.C., squaring off with Long Island's Tommy Rainone (22-5-1, 4 KOs), of Plainview, New York, in a scheduled 10-round bout. The rest of the card has not been announced.

"We feel it's a good competitive fight between an up-and-coming prospect against a guy fighting in his hometown who comes to fight," Itskowitch said.

The dates and venues for the other two shows, which are time buys on the network, have not been set, although Itskowitch said Roc Nation Sports hopes to put them on in the first half of 2015 and are looking at venues in Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

In addition to the fights on Jan. 9, of which $1 from each ticket sold will be donated to the Muhammad Ali Center, Roc Nation Sports said there will also be live performances by Roc Nation artists still to be announced.

"Madison Square Garden is looking forward to teaming up with Roc Nation for their first-ever boxing event," said Joel Fisher, executive vice president of MSG Sports. "The Theater at Madison Square Garden provides a great setting for fans to watch boxing and entertainment all under one roof."

Itskowitch, the former COO of Golden Boy Promotions, joined Roc Nation Sports as it entered boxing in August and has been eager to get to work on a show.

"I'm very excited about this deal because I do events. Until I'm doing events, I'm not really satisfied," he said. "I now have a date, a network, a venue and a main event, and we're ready to go. I'm tired of being asked what we're working on. Now we have something with these shows, and to have our first one at Madison Square Garden is special. We want to do things big. It's a basic cable television show, but we will amp this up. It's at the Garden, it's in New York, and we will have Michael Buffer as the ring announcer. To have our first show in New York is a great thing."

Besides the three-fight deal with Fox Sports 1, Roc Nation Sports is on the verge of finalizing a deal to buy promoter Gary Shaw's company, Gary Shaw Productions, according to multiple sources. That deal could be finalized as soon as this week, although Shaw and Roc Nation officials declined to comment.

If the deal is completed, Shaw, with decades of experience, would come to work for Roc Nation Sports and the company would take over the promotional agreements of his fighters. To date, Roc Nation Sports has not announced the signing of any fighters -- although a deal with Hernandez-Harrison is in the works.

Shaw's stable includes heavyweight contender Bryant Jennings, for whom Shaw is close to making a deal to challenge world champion Wladimir Klitschko on April 25 (HBO) in New York. Shaw's other fighters include junior welterweight contender Thomas Dulorme, junior lightweight contender Jose Pedraza and interim lightweight titlist Darleys Perez.

Perez is scheduled to defend his belt against Jonathan Maicelo on the ESPN2 "Friday Night Fights" season debut, which happens to be Jan. 9, meaning Roc Nation Sports could be promoting two cards on the same night opposite each other on competing networks.

Roc Nation Sports intended to put on its first show in November after winning a purse bid for the mandatory fight between middleweight titlist Peter Quillin and Matt Korobov in mid-August. However, rather than face Korobov, Quillin vacated the title on the direction of manager Al Haymon, whose bad blood with Jay Z and his wife, Beyonce, dates to his days in the music business, and the card never took place.

Roc Nation Sports has also been rebuffed in its efforts to sign heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder and interim welterweight titleholder Keith Thurman to multimillion-dollar contracts. Neither is signed to a promoter, but both are managed by Haymon and neither accepted the offer.

Lemieux-Rosado HBO Tripleheader A Hit With Viewers

A pleasant surprise came with HBO’s latest installment of Boxing After Dark, which produced a Knockout of the Year contender, a viable player in the middleweight division, and ratings that far surpassed expectations and the budget surrounding the show.

Canada’s David Lemieux has clawed his way back into contention after past debacles, his most recent achievement coming in a 10th round stoppage of Gabriel Rosado on December 6 in Brooklyn, New York. The bout marked the stateside debut for Lemieux, which registered well with the home audience as an average of 908,000 viewers tuned in for the main event.

The fight–which also marked Lemieux’s first appearance on HBO—peaked at more than 1.16 million viewers. Lemieux is now being suggested as a future opponent for unbeaten middleweight titlist Gennady Golovkin, who is under exclusive contract with HBO.

The strong ratings pull was an increase of nearly 125% from the prior week, when Fighter of the Year candidate Terence Crawford scored a 12-round decision over Raymundo Beltran. Crawford’s World lightweight championship win ran well past 1:00 a.m. ET, resulting in a considerable ratings dip from his previous network appearances.

Fans hoped for history to not repeat itself, despite HBO once again kicking off a tripleheader at 10:00 p.m. ET. Lemieux was spared having to box way after dark thanks to the early ending provided by unbeaten super welterweight prospect Hugo Centeno Jr. delivering one of the best knockouts of the year, icing James de la Rosa in five rounds.

Like Lemieux, Centeno Jr. was also appearing on HBO for the first time. His smash hit in the ring drew 750,000 viewers for the evening’s chief support. The bout peaked at 815,000 viewers.

Opening the show, Thomas Dulorme scored a narrow 10-round split decision win over Hank Lundy. Their fan-friendly affair drew an average of 672,000 viewers, peaking at 778,000 viewers.

Overall, the show performed remarkably well, considering the total fight purses barely exceeded $500,000, a budget that pales in comparison to most Boxing After Dark telecasts

can't really speak on it since everyone handles tragedy differently.

Anyways more details coming out, I'm sure Floyd didn't know he was suicidal but maybe he had the wrong approach with dude calling him weak for not leaving her...

One of those alleged affairs was said to be with*singer-songwriter Trey Songz two years ago and, while Hayes and Moseley had since reconciled, Hayes never got over the incident, the website claimed.

Mayweather was having a conversation with Hayes over FaceTime early on Monday morning when he reportedly encouraged Hayes to leave Moseley, 30, because she was "bad for his career", TMZ reported.

"One Mayweather source says Floyd challenged Hayes, saying he was weak for not leaving her," TMZ said.

"At that point, as Floyd was on FaceTime, Hayes went off and said he was going to gun down Stephanie."

Mayweather reportedly did not know that Moseley was in the apartment at the time, but when he realized she was -*he apparently begged Hayes not to follow through with his threat.

Hayes is believed to have shot Moseley dead as she was taking a bath, firing up to 12 shots at her. He then shot himself.

On Monday night, hours after the shooting, Mayweather was photographed sitting courtside at a basketball game between the Los Angeles Clippers and the Phoenix Suns.

The Los Angeles Police Department released a statement confirming the deaths of Hayes and Moseley.

hating? how so? i was simply saying he loves the limelight/spotlight too much. He didnt just go to a "GAME", he just saw his friend blow someone away in her bathtub then turn the gun and blast himself. Let that soak in for a bit...now your all smiles and partying up a couple of hours later? Floyd is a selfish person, period I do believe in this whole everybody deals with it differently, but this is on another stratosphere.

nice interview

Bernard Hopkins was recently on the Breakfast Club discussing his career, Goldenboy, Mayweather vs Pacquiao, and more. About halfway through the interview they asked him about the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight ever happening. He gave his thoughts on why the fight just might not happen. Here are some excerpts ....

- When both sides have that much money, it's not always how much will we make because we both have money ..

- The fight was diminished when Marquez knocked out Pacquiao

- Floyd has the leverage and it could cause failed negotiations

- Floyd would win the fight, but Pacquiao would make him earn every minute of the fight

Man get Floyd's nuts out ur mouth dude and I'm not judging him I'm stating my opinion get your TMT thong out ur ass. It ain't a secret that he looks for cameras everywhere he goes. His "best friend" blows his head off and says fucc it, lets go see Blake griffin. Some friend Floyd is/was....he's all about money, he don't know what friends or family is. No loyalty...

There you go again judging him and acting like you know him and what he is about? Most celebrities and rish people are about money you moron. Get a clue. He has earned every penny so if he wants to go to a game than you get off his nuts and worry about your own. Hatin someone from a sports standpoint and rooting against a person or team is coo but to act like you know the man and what he is about and its far from the truth because you dont know jack about him. Keep it movin and stop whining about how hes about money and being a lousy friend. U act like he told the dude to kill himself and the chick? Get a clue homeboy. Got Em!!

You need to look at it a different way dude, don't look at Floyd as your hero right now. Look at him as a regular human being and tell me that shit is right. Fucc no it ain't! Unlike you I give 2 fuccs about his money and what he does with, my point was simple, he's only about it and does not care about anybody else or what happened to his so called best friend. I'm sure he'll pay for the service cuz he feels shitty, he knows part of that was his fault.
