What happened? I see a thread on boxingscene but no one knows any details.
yeah I've only seen this from Rick Glazer so far so I'm not sure this is true. But he tends to break a lot of stories and obviously has a lot of inside connections (he was the first person to say there was a beef between Oscar & Schaefer and Golden Boy was going to break up, etc.), so I wouldn't doubt it at all. I'm sure more info will be coming out within the next few days. Tyson was only the figurehead; his only job really was just to be there and promote; all the business stuff was handled by Garry Jonas and Azim Spicer. The company was named something else, but they hired Mike Tyson in 2013 and renamed the company to Iron Mike Productions. They only wanted him for his name value.

That's a mistake IMO. I'm sure that Tyson was just the face of it and not really doing anything behind the scenes, but I think his name alone gets them on TV and it gets people out to the shows. Unless he was doing things that could've run them into the ground I don't see the benefits of this.

Gary Shaw Believes Dulorme Is Ready for a World Title Shot Next

images“He has regional titles, they’re good, they’re nice to have. Now it’s time to step up and get a world title.”

These were the words of promoter Gary Shaw speaking with Vic Salazar following Thomas Dulorme’s split decision victory over Hank Lundy at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on December 6th.

Dulorme (now 22-1,14 KOs) is promoted by Shaw and defended his NABF light-welterweight title and gained the WBO NABO title at the same weight by edging out Lundy in a tight fight, which he probably won with the knockdown that he scored in the opening round. Now Shaw believes his man is on the cusp of challenging for a world title and his latest victory was a crucial building block in preparation for that next step.

“I think it was a solid performance. I think he made the fight a little bit harder than he should have, he could have kept Lundy outside by keeping that jab, doubling up on the jab.”

An objective assessment like that is born out of many years promoting some of the biggest superstars in the game. At one time or another Shaw has promoted the likes of Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Shane Mosley, Arturo Gatti, Manny Pacquiao and Diego Corrales. I imagine it’s rather difficult to for him to get overexcited about anything with a resume like that. He offered a similar overview of Lundy’s performance too, complimentary yet truthful.

“Lundy started figuring him[Dulorme] out a little. You know Lundy’s a seasoned veteran, he’s crafty so he started to get on the inside but he didn’t cut off the ring. He only followed Dulorme around but it was a great learning experience for Thomas and it’s a great step up. These are the things you need to move it up.”

So who awaits at the top of the stairwell for for young Dulorme? The real kingpin of the division is Danny Garcia, holding the WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring Magazine titles at 140 pounds, but he is fighting on the other side of the street at Showtime and is almost certainly moving up to welterweight in the near future. Lamont Peterson holds the IBF strap but also fights on Showtime, so that leaves WBA (Regular) Champion Jessie Vargas in the firing line should he deal with the imminent challenge of the interim champ Mauricio Herrera. The WBA is also the most promising route as it is with them that Dulorme is ranked the highest.

The ‘politricks’ of boxing have whittled a plethora of options down to just one. All Dulorme needs to do now is get his foot on the ladder, and the remaining rung left available to him is a very winnable fight indeed.

Bryant Jennings v Artur SzpilkaEver since Wladimir Klitschko stopped Kubrat Pulev in the fifth round last month, there have been heavy rumors that unbeaten American Bryant Jennings will be the next in line to face the long reigning champion. ThaBoxingVoice.com had a chance to catch up with Jennings’ promotor Gary Shaw last Saturday at The Barclays Center.
Shaw confirmed to us that there have been talks between both camps. But also clearly stated that the fight is not a done deal yet.
“I rather just tell you for now that Shelly Finkel [Klitschko’s manager] called me. We have spoken about the fight. But I have no announcement yet. For now we are just talking.”
Our own Victor Salazar brought up a rumor that the 30-year old Jennings was moved to front row, because he will fight Klitschko in the same building next April.
Shaw responded with a smile, “I don’t know where you get that information from? Do you have someone in your ear?”
He later added, “Bryant is a great guy, a great speaker and a great fighter. If he ever gets the chance to fight Klitschko, he will be the heavyweight champion of the world. We need a heavyweight champion in the United States badly.”
The Barclays is rumored to be the favorite to host the fight. They have expressed their desire before about getting a Klitschko fight. Another potential venue is Madison Square Garden. We asked Shaw if he prefers either of the two venues.
“A venue is a venue. Barclays is a great venue. Madison Square Garden is a great venue. Staples Center is a great venue. This is about the opportunity to get the figh

By jochef: Nothing gets a good old debate going quite like a pound for pound list, not just weather or not you agree with the rankings, but also how you came to decide where to place the fighters in question. I simply went on gut feeling and if all these guys were the same weight and faced each other who would win.

No. 10 Jamie McDonnell
Holder of the WBA Bantamweight title, I can see a big year coming in 2015 with maybe a unification fight and hopefully some more mainstream recognition.

No. 9 Billy Joe Saunders
Even with a good performance against Eubank jr, he himself will admit he still has lots to learn, I feel the best is yet to come.

No. 8 James Degale
Arguably more talented than George Groves, but in both the amateurs and professional he has two big losses against the saint so I simply couldn’t put chunky above him.

No. 7 George Groves
Has certainly lost his edge since the Carl Froch wonder punch, I hope to see Him return to the form he showed in Froch v Groves 1

No. 6 Scott Quigg
Seems to be somewhat protected and I would like to see him fight more top level opposition, he certainly has the tools to mix it with the best, the Frampton fight is a must for 2015!

No. 5 Tyson Fury
Controversy always surrounds Tyson, but with his performance against Chisora he is right at the top of the heavyweight pile in the Uk and number 1 contender to wladimir Klitschko.

No. 4 Carl Frampton
Solid in every department, he is just as good fighting on the back foot as he is the front, and with the Mcguigan team behind him he will just keep getting better and better.

No. 3 Amir Khan
Since moving up in weight and with Virgil Hunter in his corner I think Khan is back to his best! A good performance against Alexander should put him in pole position to face Mayweather.

No. 2 Carl Froch
If my list was based on toughness, punch resistance, fan base or CV then Froch would be number 1 but was just pipped at the post on my list, it was hard for me not to put him at the top.

No. 1 Kell Brook
Ok I know not everyone will agree with me but if all the fighters on this list were the same size would any of them beat brook? I just think he has the best all round game and the Porter fight told us everything we needed to know, Kell Brook is the real deal.

Others to mention-

Anthony Joshua, won’t be long before he’s on the list.

Callum Smith, top prospect breaking through.

Paul Smith, Should be world Champion after controversial fight with Arthur Abraham, I think they have agreed to rematch in Germany some time next year

Tony Bellew, needs to prove himself against a proper cruiserweight.

David Haye, says he is going to fight again, if he’s still got it then he will probably get on my list.

please comment and tell me who’s on your list.

Lemieux: I’m not afraid of Golovkin

gennady golovkin david lemieux photoBy Dan Ambrose: #2 WBC, #5 IBF, #8 WBO middleweight contender David Lemieux (33-2, 31 KOs) did his part last Saturday in stopping the always tough Gabriel Rosado (21-9, 13 KOs) in the 10th round of a back and forth fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Referee Steve Willis halted the fight with Rosado, 28, still on his feet and fighting back in the 10th. You can make a strong argument that the fight deserved to continue on because Rosado was definitely still fighting back at the time of the stoppage. But ignoring the controversial ending, Lemieux said he’s open to fighting Gennady Golovkin, Miguel Cotto and Peter Quillin. Lemieux specifically said that he’s not afraid to fight Golovkin, and that he only wants to fight the best.

“I’m ready to fight anybody at 160,” Lemieux said after the fight. Gennady Golovkin, Quillin, Cotto – I’m not afraid to fight anybody. I’m ready to fight anybody. Gennady Golovkin, I’m not afraid of him.”

It really doesn’t matter if Lemieux is afraid of Golovkin. He can be totally unafraid of fighting him, but it’s still going to be a major ask for Lemieux to be able to compete against him. With the way that Lemieux looked last night against Rosado, I believe that Golovkin will take Lemieux apart in 3-6 rounds.

It might be one of Golovkin’s easier fights due to Lemieux not having any defensive skills, and not making any adjustments on the power on his shots. Golovkin eats up limited power punchers, and I believe this would be a very simple fight for him if it gets made.

It’s unclear if Lemieux’s management are serious about wanting to match him against Golovkin. Lemieux mentioned specifically that he’s interested in Cotto and Quillin as well, and that tells me that he might prefer to get in the ring with one of them rather than facing Golovkin and getting torn apart by him in a quick knockout loss.

At this point, I think Marco Antonio Rubio would knock Lemieux out again if the two of them were to square off. Rubio has heavy hands, and he’s be able to take Lemieux’s power shots for 6-7 rounds like he did in 2011, and then come on and knock him out in the 8th or 9th. I’d rather see Lemieux prove himself against Rubio before the facing Golovkin. That way the boxing public’s time wouldn’t be wasted in having to see another unproven fighter get destroyed by Golovkin.

It’s nice that Lemieux knocked out Rosado, but the win didn’t prove anything because Rosado isn’t ranked in the top 15 at 160, and he was easily beaten by Jermell Charlo, Golovkin, Quillin and Alfredo Angulo in the past. If Lemieux wants to prove himself, he should go backwards and try and avenge his loss to Rubio before the public’s time is wasted by having Lemieux get exposed by Golovkin.

ANTONIO TARVER ON JOHNATHAN BANKS CLASH: "HE WILL BE SURPRISED BY A LOT OF WHAT I BRING INTO THE RING"
By Press Release | December 08, 2014
ANTONIO TARVER ON JOHNATHAN BANKS CLASH:

Five-time world champion Antonio "Magic Man" Tarver (30-6, 21 KOs) won't be concerned about rust this Thursday night when he fights for the first time in more than a year against veteran Johnathan Banks (29-2-1, 19 KOs).

Tarver-Banks is a 10-round heavyweight fight, presented on a Goossen Promotions card, airing live on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes from Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California.

Tarver suffered a now-fully-healed fractured thumb to his left hand, closer to the wrist, postponing the original September 29th fight date versus Banks. The 1996 U.S. Olympian has had only five fights in the last six years.

"I'm not concerned with rust," the cagey southpaw said. "If I'm rusty, it will only be until I'm hit. I've been trying to wear off ring rust with intelligent sparring but that's not like getting reps of a fight.

"I have to beat a solid heavyweight with power like Banks to get where I want to be. I will become the oldest world heavyweight champion in boxing history! He will be surprised by a lot of what I bring into the ring."

Tarver has been training at the Brazilian Rocky Fight Club in Miami for the past three months to prepare for Thursday's fight with Banks, who trained world heavyweight champion Wladmir Klitschko for his recent knockout win over Kubrat Pulev.

"I always stress to my fighters in the gym for them to work in rhythm and not be sluggish," Tarver's head trainer Orlando Cuellar explained. "Sluggishness and not fighting in rhythm are what shows when there's ring rust. You always worry about rust. I can honestly say Antonio hasn't looked rusty but, working in the gym and actual fighting are two different things, and we really won't really know until this week's fight. Antonio has always told me that he's not a good gym fighter but that, once the bell rings for the first round, he's a great fighter.

"This is the first fight we've worked together and Antonio has done everything I've asked of him in training for the last three months. He took five days off to be examined by his personal doctor and other than that he's been working hard, even when he wore a cast. The first four weeks were tough for him because I train my fighters to stop and drop their opponent. It's high intensity work, much harder than most fighters go through, but he's given his all in workouts and sparring. With our experience, his as a fighter and me as a trainer, I expect nothing less than the best from Antonio. It'll be much easier for both of us, training-wise, for his next fight."

The 46-year-old Tarver, fighting out of Tampa, was one of the world's top pound-for-pound fighters during a 4-year, 9-fight stretch between 2002-2006, in which he had a 6-3 record, defeating Roy Jones, Jr. in two of three, splitting a pair with Glen Johnson, defeating Montell Griffin, Eric Harding and Reggie Johnson, and losing to Bernard Hopkins.

Banks, 32, has been out of action even longer than Tarver, having last fought June 23, 2013 in a 12-round loss by unanimous decision to Seth Mitchell.

"Every fight is independent in itself," Tarver noted, "so, I can't say I've fought anybody like Banks. I have fought a lot of guys with power who know how to box. Everybody has two hands and two feet but he can only use one hand at a time. I simplify things. I will be in my best shape and I won't be surprised by whatever he brings into the ring."
