Chavez Ripens for Martinez
By Steve Kim, MaxBoxing (July 11, 2012)

It was over a year ago when Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. captured the WBC middleweight title by outpointing Sebastian Zbik at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It was a belt vacated by Sergio Martinez (who has rightfully held the title of the recognized champion at 160 pounds) after HBO refused to purchase a fight between he and Zbik. It was widely assumed that Top Rank wouldn't let Chavez Jr. anywhere near “Maravilla” till they felt he was ready- if ever.

Well, that time has come, as they are scheduled to meet at the Thomas and Mack Center on September 15th in Las Vegas.

At a press conference at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles on Tuesday, the official announcement was made for this fight. And both fighters had a bit of an edge to them.

“I want to thank Julio for accepting this difficult, very difficult fight- difficult for him,” cracked Martinez, through his adviser, Sampson Lewkowicz. He added later, “Take a picture of [Chavez] now because after the fight, you will not recognize him. I will really beat him up.”

Martinez firmly believes he will be taking back something that was ripped away from him. “Not only will I recoup my championship as a middleweight, I will continue to demonstrate I am one of the best pound-for-pound fighters.” And he added this final salvo toward Chavez, “On September 15th, it will be time to take all the feathers off the skin of Chavez Jr.”

Chavez Jr. sounded determined.

“He's one of the best fighters in the middleweight division; he's a very good fighter,” he said of Martinez, through his co-promoter, Fernando Beltran. “I think it's going to be a sensational fight but on September the 15th, you'll see what type of fighter I am. You will know what type of fighter I am; you will know who Julio Cesar Chavez Carrasco is.”

He added later, “I have no doubt I am going to be the winner. Don't have any doubts.”

Many pundits are now tabbing Chavez Jr., who will come into the ring with a considerable size advantage, to defeat Martinez. Just 12 months ago, this fight was considered a mismatch, a pampered trust fund baby versus a seasoned master of the sport. It speaks to the great strides Chavez Jr. has made in that stretch, defeating the likes of Peter Manfredo Jr., Marco Antonio Rubio and most recently, Andy Lee. The same applies to Top Rank's foresight and patience in allowing him to grow as a fighter.

“I certainly had an obligation to the young man and I had an obligation to his father,” said Bob Arum, of the legendary “J.C. Superstar,” “and I wasn't going to let this fight happen unless I believed Chavez was competitive. I don't necessarily look for a certainty that he's going to win- but that he was competitive and had a good chance to win.” And the veteran promoter claims it had nothing to do with marinating the pay-per-view sales of this event. “It's not only about when it's ripe because there you can sometimes be too cautious, like what happened with [Yuriorkis] Gamboa and [Juan Manuel] Lopez and you blow it. But this was different; I didn't make this fight because I didn't believe that Chavez was ready, not to contrast how much better it would be to do now than it did then. That wasn't a factor in my thinking. I just didn't believe and [Top Rank matchmaker] Bruce Trampler didn't believe that [Chavez] was ready to fight Martinez.”

Lou DiBella, Arum's counterpart in this promotion, admits he felt this fight would never come to fruition. “I didn't for a long time but I thought Chavez looked terrific his last few fights. I also think his team believes the size difference is huge- and I think it is huge- and I think the night of the fight, he's going to be very big in the ring. I think they believe they have the stronger, younger, bigger guy and that Sergio's going to get old in the ring and this is Chavez's moment. I think what they don't understand is they have the more skilled, much better fighter in Martinez, who's the hungrier fighter. He's got hunger on his side as well as athletic ability, speed, elusiveness and I think it's going to be a great fight, a very difficult fight. But I expect Martinez to win that fight.”

The young man says he is reenergized about the sport he was seemingly destined for.

“I'm excited about boxing right now. I'm excited about fighting the best fights. When they tell me about fights like this, I get motivated. I think I'm ready for all this, so I get emotional; I get passionate about it. I just want to fight to prove I am one of the best,” he said.

The days of Chavez having to struggle to find motivation to face the Matt Vandas of the world are long gone.

“Without a doubt, everyone’s saying I'm going to win every fight; everyone expects me to win. Nobody expects me to lose, even when I'm fighting good fighters on top of the rankings,” said Chavez, whose record stands at 46-0-1 with 32 knockouts. “But this guy [Martinez], everyone knows he's supposed to beat me. Everyone talks about how he's going to beat me and it gets me started, motivated, working hard. I just want to beat this guy, so everyone knows how good I am.”

THE BATTLE

Of course, Martinez-Chavez is just one of two high-profile shows taking place in Las Vegas on Mexican Independence Day weekend, as Golden Boy Promotions will have a card staged at the MGM Grand featuring Saul “Canelo” Alvarez- who still has to find an opponent.

“There's no other fight in the interest of the Mexican public for the day,” said Beltran, who obviously has a biased opinion of things. “We're not announcing a fight with Chavez against a ‘TBA.’ We have the two best middleweights in the world fighting against each other.”

Regardless, when asked about what effect the Golden Boy event will have on Top Rank’s, Arum stated, “I don't think it'll have any and I just really wonder why there isn't adult supervision at Showtime. I mean, how can they blow money on this kind of drivel? That's the problem. I mean, it's wonderful to be an adjunct of a promoter- which they're doing- but how do you blow corporate money putting on unappealing product? That's what they're doing.”

The latest rumor floating around was that not only was Alvarez going to face Josesito Lopez (a career junior welterweight) but the fight would possibly air on CBS, to which Arum responded, “The one thing I'm sure of is that it won’t end up on CBS because [President and CEO of CBS] Les Moonves won’t let this garbage on CBS. If they go through with this, Alvarez against Lopez, it's garbage. It is garbage; it is something that even if none of this happened, that you wouldn't want to buy.”

TIX

When asked what he projected in terms of attendance, Arum seemed optimistic- especially given that Steve Wynn and his properties have thrown their full support behind the fight.

“I think we have 17,000 seats there [at the Thomas and Mack] and you gotta understand there's the lower bowl which has over 9,000 seats. So that will be sold out and then the balcony has 75, 50 and 25-dollar seats and I think most of those will be sold. And if they're not, that's not where the real money is,” he explained.

Rigondeaux labels Donaire: The Filipino Phony

"Donaire is running scared of any super bantamweights with power," Rigondeaux said from his Miami training camp. "He hasn't knocked out anybody at 122 pounds. One thing is for sure, though, he will get knocked out if he has the guts to fight me."

Rigondeaux trained at Wild Card Gym with one of his favorite fighters, Manny Pacquiao, who may be wondering at this point exactly why his fellow countryman, Donaire, doesn't fight Rigondeaux to determine the contemporary King of the Super Bantamweights.

"Manny fought the best fighters around when he was moving up through weight classes but this phony, Donaire, is disappointing fans all over the world, especially Filipino people, by running scared from the best fighter at 122 pounds," Rigondeaux continued. "I competed against more than 250 amateur boxers from every continent and none of those guys were paid to fight me. 'The Filipino Phony' will be paid a king's ransom to fight me, but he's scared enough to move up to 126 just to avoid fighting me. The problem he faces, though, is I will also move up to featherweight once I've cleaned out the super bantamweight division. What's he going to do then, move up to super featherweight?"

awesome. Where is naner?

Adamek & Solis Agree to an IBF Tourney (winner fights Wlad Klitschko): Waiting on Pulev, Ustinov.

Why is this dope you say?

Well, Odlanier Solis is gangsta obviously and dope as fuck, if healthy. 18-1, currently ranked #10 at heavyweight after a long lay off after his injury. His one loss being to Vitali when his knee when out on him after what seemed like a pretty damn good schooling for one round by Solis.

Adamek has proved he's a fun fighter (although at the same time he's proven he's too small for the Klitschko's).

Kubrat Pulev is a Bulgarian fighter 16-0 and currently ranked #4 at the Heavyweight division. He also defeated Solis by points in the 2002 Gold Medalist Strandjata Tournament (final fight) in Bulgaria

Alexander Ustinov is a Russian fighter 27-0 who stands 6′ 7½.

At the very least, this could quickly boost a credible opponent for Wlad instead of fighting guys like Tony Thompson over and over. And if my gut is right, Solis will win and give Wlad his toughest fight in years.

Chavez takes jab at Canelo-Lopez

Chavez shook his head at the news of Canelo fighting Lopez. He believes that his level of opposition is solidifying his claim to being "the biggest star in Mexico."

"[Canelo and his team] have been criticizing me for years....my work ethic, everything. I've shown [over] the last two years what I'm capable of doing and they've shown what they are capable of doing in the last two years," Chavez told BoxingScene.com.

"The kind of fighters I'm facing....he has faced no quality fighters in a long time. I'm facing Sergio Martinez, the best middleweight in the world. He's not facing anyone."

Chavez needs to shut up! Dude hasnt fought anyone good yet period! I mean Canelo really hasnt either. To me they are about equal in that department as far as their competition goes. Chavez is now yapping because he is finally gonna fight a real opponent but that hasnt happened yet and until its on his resume then be quiet. Lopez is Canelo's 4th choice as Williams, Kirkland, & Ortiz fell through. All 3 of those guys are much bigger than what Chavez has faced so far. Cant wait til Martinez destroys this kid! Got Em!!

chavez has had a couple solid wins over Rubio and andy lee, but I agree that's not saying a whole lot. similar to Canelo beating Ryan Rhodes and um, cintron maybe.
Thats what I am saying, those are ok opponents both ways but nuthin to write home about. I just think if someone is gonna yap about competition it shouldnt be Chavez Jr. is all. Plus they are acting like this was their first choice. I mean September is around the corner and dude needs an opponent after failing 3 times already. They get an excuse from me just because they tried 3 times before this and all 3 of the guys chosen were damn good opponents. Got Em!!

Odlanier Solis one of the only heavies that have the boxing skills to beat both K-Brothers. Can't wait to him back in action.

Amir Khan reinstated as WBA champ

unior welterweight titleholder Danny Garcia with a belt of his own.

The WBA on Wednesday announced it has stripped Lamont Peterson and reinstated Khan as its 140-pound "super" titleholder, which means the fight with Garcia on Saturday night (HBO, 11 ET) at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas will be to unify Khan's title with Garcia's WBC belt.

"This decision was taken after the positive doping result of the American Lamont Peterson, confirmed by the medical experts," the WBA said in a statement.

Khan (26-2, 18 KOs) lost both of his title belts to Peterson in December via controversial split decision in Peterson's hometown of Washington, D.C., but their May 19 rematch was canceled less than two weeks before the fight when Peterson tested positive for the banned substance synthetic testosterone in a random urine test.

Rafael's Boxing Blog

Rafael Get the latest scoop and analysis on the world of boxing from ESPN.com's Dan Rafael in his blog.

Because Peterson admitted that testosterone pellets had been implanted in him shortly before the December fight -- he claims for medical reasons -- and he has delayed a licensing hearing before the Nevada State Athletic Commission three times, the WBA made the decision to vacate his belt and reinstate Khan.

Peterson also holds the IBF title, but that organization is awaiting the outcome of his Nevada hearing, which won't take place until August at the earliest.

Khan was happy to have at least one of his belts back, even under the odd circumstances.

"It's thrilling to know that because I think they've seen there was some wrong and they have made the first move," Khan said of the WBA. "I'm glad that the title will be on the line now. It just makes the fight even more exciting and also having two world titles makes the fight even bigger.

"Me and Danny are young fighters. He's 24. I'm 25 and to be in this position fighting a huge fight with so many titles on the line I think is brilliant. We just hope that the IBF may do the same thing, put that title on the line, as well, which will be coming on this unification. I think the WBA made a great choice and I just want to thank them."

Although Peterson fought Khan with a banned substance in his system, his Washington, D.C., commission drug screen was clean after their fight. However, for the rematch, Peterson and Khan agreed to a much more extensive drug-testing protocol -- including random blood and urine testing leading up to the fight -- under the supervision of the private Voluntary Anti-Doping Association. The VADA tests are more sophisticated than those of the Washington commission, which is why the synthetic testosterone showed up in Peterson's drug screen.

Garcia (23-0, 14 KOs), of Philadelphia, will be making the first defense of the vacant belt he won by outpointing Erik Morales on March 24 in Houston. Morales had lost the title on the scale the day before the fight when he failed to make weight.

Marcos Maidana of Argentina remains the WBA's secondary "regular" titleholder in the junior welterweight division.

I would have preferred it to have been settled in the ring but that's Lamont's fault.

I actually don't mind the arce fight I think its a fight for the fans and a money fight. word is mares vs nioshika will fight and winners fight eachother so its like a four man tourney.

Rigondeaux is the odd man out. no ones is going to want to fight a guy with only 10 fights and not much hype so unfortunately he's just gonna have to keep impressing as I see all the top guys avoiding him like the plague.

lol at the crooked WBC. lopez is now ranked #4 at 154 despite never fighting in the division! things like this is why Canelo gets criticized. obviously its not his fault but its obviously the wbc plays favorites with their mexican stars (same goes for chavez).

Josesito Lopez now ranked #4 at 154 by
the WBC. Ahead of Rosado,Molina, Andrade.
