Shane Mosley: 'This Fight Will Never Go The Distance!

MANNY PACQUIAO:

“I’m excited to be fighting on May 7 because it’s covered by SHOWTIME and CBS. It’s going to give more boxing fans a chance to see the fight.

“I am going to train hard because I don’t want to disappoint the people who are going to watch this fight.

“Sugar Shane is a good fighter and he’s a champion so I will never underestimate him.

“Yes, I like all the media attention. We are trying to make this the fight of the year and that’s why we will train so hard.”

SHANE MOSLEY:

“Manny’s a great guy and when I look at him I look at him as a true competitor. I look at him as someone who really wants to win. He loves the sport of boxing and he loves to fight.”

How do you beat a Manny Pacquiao?

“I think it’s very hard but styles make the fight. Being that he’s a very exciting fighter and likes to bring it, that leaves openings for me. We’ll see when we get to the fight. It’s not the African-American style that will beat him. It’s my style that will beat him. Everybody fights differently and styles make the fight and in this fight you have two guys engaging and I think I have what it takes to get the job done.

“I don’t know what the odds are for this fight. I’m not a betting man. I definitely won’t be on the losing end. I think it should be even. We are two similar types of fighters. We both like to battle. He throws punches more rapidly than I do but my punches are heavier. I don’t know what the over-under is. It won’t go the distance. This is the type of fight that would never go the distance.

“My relationship with Manny Pacquiao is great. I have nothing against Manny Pacquiao.

“I’m definitely excited to be fighting on SHOWTIME. It’s going to be something special, especially having the FIGHT CAMP 360° on CBS. This will be one of the biggest fights of my career, if not the biggest.”

FREDDIE ROACH, Pacquiao’s trainer:

“We look forward to this. We have an opponent with a different style and we’ve come up with a game plan and a lot of people are telling me this is an easy fight and that’s the worst thing in the world to say. It’s definitely not an easy fight. Shane has been there many times. He’s going to rise to the occasion. He’s fighting Manny Pacquiao. He will fight the best fight of his life out there and we will not underestimate him. Shane, we will not do that. I promise you.”

The Pacquiao-Mosley U.S. media tour will continue on to Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and New York in The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers - Pier 61 with news conferences that will be open to the public on Saturday, Feb. 12 and Monday, Feb. 14, respectively.

LARRY HOLMES: "THE SPARRING PARTNERS I HAD WOULD BEAT THE CURRENT HEVYWEIGHT CHAMPION

By James Alden | February 11, 2011

"These guys are not even fighters man (laughing). They would have made good sparring partners for me and that's it. The sparring partners that I had would beat the current heavyweight champions. The sparring partners that Muhammad Ali had would beat these guys. Don't you know Jimmy Young was a sparring partner for Joe Frazier. Don't you know Larry Holmes was a sparring partner for Joe Frazier, Earnie Shavers and Muhammad Ali? Those are the names that I can call off the top off my head that would beat the hell out of these guys. Ron Lyle, Gerry Quary, Ken Norton are all guys who come to fight. How are you going to fight these guys who are crazy, tough and don't give a shit? These heavyweights today don't want to fight. All they want to do is look good and collect a paycheck," stated all-time great heavyweight champion Larry Holmes as he shared his thoughts on the current state of the heavyweight division, his own career, and much more

I don't think any of them were honestly.

jones protested the green fight pretty hard saying that green had loaded gloves. he protested it to the IBF (or whoever sanctioned the bout) and tried to have it overturned. I don't think he would have cared so much if it was fixed. Also, that was supposed to be a tune up fight before the Hopkines rematch, so him losing threatened to cancel the rematch entirely (but bernard decided to go a head anyway).

Lacy just fucking sucks and is shot worse than jones. He lost recently to a guy who's record is 22-19-7. I believe he retired as a result. Lacy almost lost to a bum named Epifanio Mendoza before losing to Taylor and he nearly lost to Peter Manfredo jr too. He was never the same after the shoulder surgery (and losing to calzaghe so badly).

And Calzaghe, well that was a result of a shot fighter fighting an elite fighter. Jones just doesn't have the reflexes anymore. Remember that's what made him so good. Once he lost his reflexes what does he have left? He's nothing like he used to be. He just covers up in that shell defense which is nothing like the old jones. Old jones would make you miss with cat-like reflexes, and strike with lightning speed. shit's totally gone. still has fast hands but all the reflexes and balance are gone. He never really had great fundamentals to begin with since he was so unorthodox and relied on his athleticism so once that's gone he's nothing.

all those are true, but i believe thats the reason he chose to have fixed fights because hes a shot fighter(and he knows it) he just loves that money! Roy has no reason to still be fighting, he has nothing to prove. hes a legend but the more he fights, just ruins his career badly. I stoped watching his fights all together, hes a good comentator tho

Seeing Roy in the ring nowadays makes me sad. He was one the best boxers to ever step in the ring. After the 1st Traver fight he should've retired as one of the greatest. I hope he stays away from fighting.

Devon Alexander could face Lucas Matthysse next – Boxing News

By Chris Williams: Recently beat former WBC light welterweight champion Devon Alexander (21-1, 13 KO’s) could face number #4 ranked WBO light welterweight contender Lucas Matthysse (28-1, 26 KO’s) next, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. Alexander lost his last fight to WBO champ Timothy Bradley by a 10th round technical decision last month, and was hoping to put together a fight against WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana.

Unfortunately, Maidana opted to face #1 ranked WBC contender Erik Morales on April 9th, and thus Alexander was left without an opponent. However, it now looks like Alexander could be facing the hard hitting Matthysse next. That would be an excellent fight for both Alexander and Matthysse. Alexander especially needs this fight badly, because a lot of boxing fans feel that he quit in the Bradley fight in the 10th round. Alexander fought poorly in that fight, didn’t seem to react well to Bradley’s pressure and didn’t put his punches together very well. And to top it off, Alexander seemed to milk the time-out after he was hurt by a clash of heads in the 10th. It looked like Alexander didn’t want anymore of Bradley in that fight.

Matthysse lost a controversial 12 round decision against Zab Judah last year in November, in a fight that Matthysse appeared to have won after knocking Judah to the canvas with a right hand in the 10th and battering him the rest of the way. Matthysse, however, rebounded from that fight with an impressive eight knockdown 8th round knockout over DeMarcus Corley last month on January 21st. Matthysse showed a lot of power when throwing shots to the body in that fight, as well as in the Judah fight. Matthysse brings a lot of the same excitement to his fights as does fellow Argentinian Marcos Maidana.

Alexander might be in over his head with Matthysse, because he’s got better power than Bradley, and is a better pressure fighter than he is.

Alexander’s trainer Kevin Cunningham and Matthysse’s promoter are said to like the idea of this fight happening. Indeed, Matthysse’s promoter had this to say in Rafael’s article: “We would do that fight in a heartbeat. We’d go to St. Louis. I’m going to talk to HBO and Don King next week about that.

Dirrell cleared to fight, says he’s on the brink of exploding

By Scott Gilfoid: A year after being hurt by a shot to the head by Arthur Abraham in the Super Six tournament last March, the talented Andre Dirrell (19-1, 13 KO’s) has finally been cleared by his doctor to return to the ring and resume his promising boxing career. At the time that Dirrell was injured from a punch by Abraham after Dirrell has slipped on the canvas in the 11th round, Dirrell has been looking incredibly impressive in the Super Six tournament.

Dirrell dominated Carl Froch, losing by what many people believe was an old fashioned home town decision. And in the Abraham fight, Dirrell was boxing circles around Abraham and was on his way to winning what would have been an easy fight.

Dirrell was cleared to resume training as of February 1st, according to Mlive.com. Dirrell had this to say in the Mlive.com interview: “When I fought Carl Froch, everybody thought I won the fight. The world saw that. The world knows I won the fight and it was a good fight for me. Moving on to Arthur Abraham, I totally dominated him. It was a picture perfect performance until the late hit. Like one reporter said, ‘he tarnished a Picasso.’ I am on the brink of exploding.”

Yes, Dirrell should be undefeated right now looking to resume his domination of the super middleweight division. Dirrell wants to fight WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward in the near future, but that fight will have to wait awhile so that Dirrell can get the rust off and destroy one or two fighters before we can see that fight.

Cleverly-Braehmer: Nathan wants Tavoris Cloud as soon as possible

By Sean McDaniel If WBO light heavyweight interim champion Nathan Cleverly (23-0, 10 KO’s) wins his next fight against the World Boxing Organization light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (36-2, 29 KO’s) on April 2nd, Cleverly wants to go after undefeated IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud (22-0, 18 KO’s) immediately after.

That’s a tall order for Cleverly, because Cloud is a much better fighter than the guys that Cleverly has been facing up until now. Cleverly may wish that he have opted to milk the WBO title if he can get by the 32-year-old Braehmer at the Wembley Arena, in London, England. That fight in itself figures to be a tough one for Cleverly unless he can grow some boxing skills before April 2nd.

In an article at the dailymail.co.uk, the 23-year-old Cleverly said “As soon as I win this fight, I will be straight on the case of my promoter to fight Tavoris Cloud, the IBF champion. I want to clean up and be undisputed champion and I reckon I can do that this year, provided I get Braehmer out of the way. He’s a proper world champion but I know that whatever Braehmer gives me I’m going to walk through it and punish him. If I can beat Braehmer, it will open doors for me to the likes of Cloud, the WBC champion Jean Pascal and Bernard Hopkins. I would love to fight in the States sooner rather than later.”

Frankly, I think Cloud wouldn’t stand a chance against Cloud, Pascal and Hopkins, but you can’t blame him for wanting to at least try and fight them.

It sounds like Cleverly is going to try and plod his way though Braehmer’s shots on April 2nd. That may be the smartest thing for Cleverly to do, because he took a lot of punishment in his fights with Karo Murat and Nadjib Mohammedi last year. Cleverly won the fights, but took a lot of shots to the head.

Pacquiao's Hand "Lump" Not a Problem, Says Koncz

By Michael Marley

Not to mix world affairs with world championship boxing but some Manny Pacquiao fanatics, none of whom are afraid of goons riding camels, are concerned that it might be "Down goes Pacman" because of a golf ball sized lump on their hero's right hand, close to his wrist.

The lump, which can be seen prominently in Chris Farina's Top Rank photo from the Thursday Sugar Shane Mosley-Pacquiao May 7 bout kickoff media conference in tony Beverly Hills, is nothing new and nothing to worry about according to Canadian Clubber and MP agent, Michael Koncz

It's really nothing new, the lump," Koncz said by phone from LA on Friday. "We've had it checked out, we've had it looked at by doctors.

"It's not a cyst but it's like a cyst. Manny has no pain associated with it. It's been there before and there are no side effects to it."

Naturally, some over the top Pacfans are working themselves into panic mode after noticing the lump on Manny's jabbing hand.

Moving from the hand to the head, Koncz is amused by all the commentary, including my own sarcastic shots, about Pacman's Prince Valiant/Justin Bieber hairstyle.

On the cosmetic issue list, the flowing locks are drawing more interest than the lumpy paw.

"I had to laugh because we got more comments about Manny's hair than we did about the Mosley fight, at least yesterday."

I asked Koncz what inspired Pacman to grow the hairy mess on his cranium.

"The inspiration?" Koncz said. "That I couldn't tell you. I told Manny he should get a haircut but we made an agreement that, when he gets a haircut, I'll have to get one also."

Like it or lump it, I guess we best get used to Pacquiao's new 'do.

El terrible vs maidana
guerrero vs katsidis
winky wright vs matthew Macklin
james kirkland

HBO is fucking up. The one good thing they did was get Hopkins-pascal rematch but even though I'm a hopkins fan signing a 46 year old to a 3 fight deal is kinda crazy.

so floyd is posting pacquiao's two early career ko losses on his twitter/facebook. didn't I say after pac/mosley is totally signed and everything is done floyd would come out of his silence and talk shit?? he's done this the last several pac fights. completely missing when pac needs an opponent no one can find him

i swear floyd has become a keyboard warrior. his insecurity is really starting to show. I'm actually starting to feel bad for him, it's became so painfully obvious.

Shaw says Bradley-Khan is basically a done deal

By Sean McDaniel: The Amir Khan vs. Timothy Bradley unification bout is pretty much a done deal for July, according to Gary Shaw, the promoter for Bradley. Khan first must win his next fight against EBU light welterweight champion Paul McCloskey on April 16th, and then we could have a big unification bout between Khan, the WBA Super World light welterweight champion and Bradley, the holder of the WBC/WBO light welterweight belts.

Bradley’s contract with Shaw will soon be ending, but he still has one fight left. Shaw intends on using that fight for the Khan bout, as long as Khan and Bradley can successfully negotiate the fight. Both fighters are interested in the match-up, and Khan really wants the fight so that he can prove he’s the best fighter in the division.

Khan plans on moving up in weight shortly after the Bradley fight to try and get bouts against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Shane Mosley. Both of those fighters will make much more money than a simple unification bout against Bradley or a rematch with Marcos Maidana.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any fighters in the light welterweight division that will bring in the kind of excitement that a fight between Khan and Mosley or Khan and Mayweather would. It doesn’t matter that Mosley is shot. It will still make more money than any of the fights that Khan could have at light welterweight.

In an article by Robert Morales at presstelegram.com, Shaw said “I went to Richard Schaefer’s office at Golden Boy. I believe that we have pretty much closed the deal. To me, that’s what really is important to discuss. Not my life or my contract with Timothy Bradley.”

Dirrell wants warm-up fight and then Bute within next 7 months

By Scott Gilfoid: Super middleweight Andre Dirrell (19-1, 13 KO’s) is actively looking for his next fight and hopes to be back in the ring in either March or April of this year in a tune-up bout. Dirrell wants a fight with IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute within in the next seven months, according to his latest interview at milive.com.

Unlike what some people say about Dirrell being slightly diminished because of the way his last fight against Arthur Abraham ended, Dirrell doesn’t see it that way. Dirrell had this to say in the milive.com interview today: “I would say I’m pretty much glorified, but all I can do is push forward and keep proving myself. That’s what you have to do in boxing. If you have a setback, a true champion comes back.”

I agree with Dirrell. He showed true courage in the Abraham fight and dominated the fighter who at the time was sitting at the top of the Super Six tournament. Dirrell basically softened up Abraham for Carl Froch to come along and beat later on in the tournament.

Dirrell said this about his future plans: “I’m on my way back, and after a warm-up fight then I really really really want to get in there with Lucian Bute to definitely take his title then I go after Andre Ward. Bute is definitely in my radar, I would love to fight him and I’m sure it will soon come.”

Yes, those will be great fights for Dirrell, and I can see him winning both of them. I also want to see Dirrell fight a rematch with Froch in a neutral venue outside of the UK and beat him so that there can be no controversy like last time they fought. In that fight, Froch won a questionable 12 round decision while fighting at home in Nottingham. But I don’t know if it will be worth fighting Froch after he loses to Ward or Glen Johnson in the Super Six tournament. It might be better off just ignoring Froch and moving onto bigger and better things like Bute, Ward, and Mikkel Kessler.

Dirrell has the kind of talent that compares to fighters like a prime Floyd Mayweather Jr., Sugar Ray Robinson and Cassius Clay. Dirrell can do pretty much everything – punch with power, speed, move well and defend. He’s the whole package. The year off from boxing isn’t going to hurt him one bit, because he’s going to be just as good as before.

HBO interested in Cloud vs. Erdei bout – Boxing News

By Jason Kim: HBO is reportedly interested in a potential bout between IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud (22-0, 18 KO’s) vs. unbeaten former two time world champion Zsolt Erdei (32-0, 17 KOs), according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

The fight matches Cloud, a fighter with good power and a high work rate against one of the best light heavyweights from 2004 to 2009 in Erdei. The winner of this fight would then, if all goes as planned, take on the winner of the Bernard Hopkins vs. Jean Pascal, and Chad Dawson fights. This, of course, would have to be agreed on by the winner of those series of fights.

Hopkins may or not be willing to take on the winner of the Cloud-Erdei fight, because Hopkins is talking about wanting to fight IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute, provided that Hopkins can get past both Pascal and the winner of Dawson vs. TBA on May 21st. We don’t know who will emerge the winner in those fights, but if it’s Dawson or Pascal, you can bet that they would be interested in taking on the Erdei vs. Cloud winner. That would be a good fight for them, as it would for Hopkins if he’s not in a big rush to face Bute.

Cloud, 29, is coming off a one-sided 12 round decision over Fulgencio Zuniga last December. Before that, Cloud struggled to beat 41-year-old Glen Johnson by a 12 round decision in August 2010. Cloud looked vulnerable and had problems with Johnson’s high work rate.

Erdei, 36, last defeated Samson Onyango by an eight round unanimous decision last November. Before that, Erdei defeated Giacobbe Fragomeni by a 12 round majority decision in November 2009 to capture his WBC cruiserweight paper title. Erdei was smart enough to vacate the title rather than try his luck against some of the bigger, stronger cruiserweights, who likely would have beaten him.

this fight makes alot of of sense
