Can Al Haymon save Amir Khan’s career?
Read more at Can Al Haymon save Amir Khan’s career?

By Poerqe: It seems like Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) has signed with the well known boxing adviser Al Haymon. This could be a very smart move by Amir and his team. Not only is it easier for Amir to make a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr now. But he also doesn’t have to earn that fight anymore.

Haymon could match Khan up with some easy fights. Khan’s team hasn’t been known to pick the best fighters for Amir. They have been matching him up with high risk, low value opponents. Like Danny Garcia for example.

Khan needs to be matched up against guys who are well known to casual fans but don’t pack a punch, like Devon Alexander, Paulie Malignaggi, Timothy Bradley etc. And Haymon is a genius in that department. Probably the fans will lose out on some exciting fights. I don’t expect Khan to fight a Keith Thurman, Marco maidana or even a Shawn Porter for that matter.

We could be in for more Luis Collazo (35-5, 18 KO’s) type of fighters for Khan in the future. I consider that ‘C rank fighters.’ Don’t let the knockout of Victor Ortiz by Collazo earlier this year fool you. Collazo isn’t a big puncher, and Ortiz hasn’t been the same fighter he once was for a long time now. So Amir will likely continue to fight ‘C rank fighters’, at least till he gets his dream match with Mayweather, and then he’ll retire or fight more ‘C rank fighters’. Anyway this is a win-win situation for Khan. He finally found a way to fight soft opponents and in the process not jeopardize a match against Mayweather.

That’s boxing for you these days; it’s not about the best fighters squaring up against each other in the ring. No, it’s all about the more popular fighter with the best connections getting an opportunity gift wrapped to him. And that is sad for the fans. But I guess it’s our fault for sticking up with it.

Wtf? Why the fuck is he going to the house of a guy? What guy meets another guy and goes over to his crib the same night? In Hollywood the land of high level faggotry?

Raises some red flags doesn't it? Only non gay explanation I can think of is dude offered Ouma some drugs, since I know Ouma at the very least smokes a lot of weed. Maybe Ouma was just trying to get high. Even then doesn't really make sense.

Floyd Mayweather is more popular than Manny Pacquiao, says Leonard Ellerbe
Time running out for Pacquiao as Mayweather only planning two more fights after Marcos Maidana on May 3, writes Matt Christie

FLOYD MAYWEATHER will not be truly appreciated until he retires declared his advisor, Leonard Ellerbe. Appreciate Floyd while he’s here, we’re told, because his career only has three fights left to run. For now, the multi-weight king is focused on the first of that closing trio – Marcos Maidana – on May 3. They have no interest in discussing Manny Pacquiao, a fighter Ellerbe believes Mayweather dwarfs in popularity.

“Floyd has tunnel vision,” Ellerbe said. “He don’t see nothing but his next opponent. People want to see him knocked off his perch, and pay good money in case that happens. Look how long he’s been on top. He’s fought the best of his era. He’s still doing his thing and he’s 37 years old. Once this deal runs out [he’s three fights into a six-fight deal with Showtime] that will be that. There will be nothing left to prove. People will have a greater appreciation of what he has done for boxing when that happens, when he’s long retired. He’s the biggest star and he’s completely changed the game.”

Ellerbe, who claims the Maidana fight has already amassed over $14million in gate receipts, stated that the Argentine slugger is the hardest puncher Mayweather has faced.

“Maidana is the biggest puncher - in my opinion - that Floyd has faced up to this point,” he said. “He has the highest knockout percentages. His fights are always entertaining. He touches people and it has an effect. Look at the Adrien Broner fight [whom Maidana outscored in December 2013]. Maidana lands a grazing shot and Broner was f***** up and after that he could not recover. There won’t be no moving around, he knows he’s got to bring it to Maidana to win this fight.”

“Maidana can fight his ass off. I don’t pay attention to no odds because we’re in a fight. This guy comes, he’s busy, he’s unorthodox and anything can happen. We saw in 2010 with the Shane [Mosley] fight. Floyd was in tip top shape and he took a big shot in the second round. We’re expecting a very exciting fight.”

Ellerbe was responding to Bob Arum’s criticisms that Mayweather-Maidana is a poor fight, that the huge underdog has no chance, and therefore, should be ignored as a viable contest. The veteran promoter’s scorn came on the back of the MGM Grand electing to heavily publicise the fight when Top Rank’s own Manny Pacquiao’s return with Tim Bradley was just days away.

“We put on the biggest events,” responded Ellerbe. “The difference is that we’re already at $14.2million at the live gate [Mayweather-Maidana]. They barely did $8million [for Pacquiao-Bradley II]. It doesn’t compare. It’s night and day. But I’m not here to badmouth their event. Both fighters [Mayweather and Pacquiao] are very, very good.

De La Hoya & Arum Trying to Make a Canelo vs. Pacquiao Fight
by Robert Littal | Posted on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2014

oscar-de-la-hoya

I am not sure what is going on behind the scenes of Golden Boy Promotions. It maybe something, it maybe nothing, but Oscar and the President of Golden Boy Richard Schaefer don’t appear to be on same page.

With that being said I am all for anything that ends the Cold War between Golden Boy, Top Rank, HBO and Showtime.

Could just be wishful thinking, but one can dream.

O @oscard eLaHoya tells me he's talked to B @bob Arum and has broached the subject of a M @Manny Pacquiao @caneloOficial fight, ending Cold War.

Which would explain Oscar wanting Canelo vs Pacquiao since Canelo is one of the few Golden Boy fighters not signed by Al Haymon. When Floyd was retired Golden Boy matched all their guys against Pacquiao.

Richard Schaefer:

I'm not going to discuss my current contractual relationship with Golden Boy, but I am not aware of signing a contract extension recently, so I have no idea what Oscar is talking about, you would have to ask him [regarding*what he's talking about].*I'm the CEO of the company and*I'm working very hard, I'm doing my job and I'm making fights.*You saw me at Floyd's workout earlier today. It's almost 9pm and I'm still working. I know that Oscar, as part of his recovery, is making friends with Arum and I support him if that's what he wants to do. But I have no interest in working with Arum. I've been led down that road many times and I don't want to do it again," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.

Oscar on Arum:

“If anyone with Golden Boy has any differences with Bob, it’s on them,” De La Hoya said. “I have nothing against Bob and I feel making fights with Bob is beneficial to the fans and the market.”

“Bob, what he did for my career was amazing and I appreciate it, am so grateful. I don’t see any reason why I shouldn’t extend an olive branch, end the cold war and make fights together. I will be making calls in the near future and we’ll make an event together very soon.”

Arum on Oscar
“I’d be happy to talk to Oscar about any subject in boxing he wishes to talk to me about,” Arum said. “All this baloney about a cold war has never really applied to Oscar and myself. We can talk bout any subject in boxing rationally. … We might disagree on a particular point, but we can talk. I hope we’ll get together and have some significant meetings in the near future.”

So we have Oscar and Arum saying they want to work together and end the cold war, while Richard says he's not going to work with Arum and denies signing an extension. Seems clear Richard will leave eventually, maybe going towwhatever Haymon has up his sleeve. Then GB and TR will work together, but still a cold war with them vs Haymon fighters

All fighters, as long as they are signed with GB, will stay with Al Haymon and will do fights with TR. But eventually they will go with Mayweather Promotions. If Canelo passes Lara HBO will allow the winner or loser of the Cotto Martinez fight to go up against Canelo later this year, then GB will leave Showtime. Too much catering is going on for Mayweather that a lot of big name fighters seem to get tired of it, even B-Hop. Even if GB fighters get rejected by HBO cuz they are signed to Haymon, Showtime will eventually get tired of over paying fighters on mismatches as well and the fighters will also want something new. Very complicated situation but the same has been going on in Mexico for a while now and we just seen Canelo leave Televisa so who knows

De La Hoya Focused on Patching Things Up With Arum
Click Here To Email Printable version Search BoxingScene Database*

By Carlos Arias

Oscar De La Hoya was back in his role as the president of Golden Boy Promotions, leading Thursday's news conference to promote Saturday's triple-header at StubHub Center in Carson on Showtime.

Before the news conference, De La Hoya spoke about how he initiated a conversation with his former promoter and rival Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions recently.

"Absolutely," De La Hoya said. "It was a must. You know, I have a program that I'm following that is making me a bigger person, a better person, a person that is honest, a person that really just wants to make amends to whoever I owe amends to and I owe amends to Bob Arum. Bob Arum has been very instrumental in my career. I'm never going to forget about that. Now that we're promoters why not work together for the best and better of the fans of the sport? That's what we must do."

De La Hoya said he didn't talk about specific fights with Arum. Obviously, one of the biggest fights that could be made would be Manny Pacquiao, who is Top Rank's biggest star, vs. Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, who is Golden Boy Promotions's biggest star.

"What I'm doing is I've extended the olive branch (to Arum), you know, for the good of the sport, for the good of Golden Boy and Top Rank, and for the fans in general," De La Hoya said. "Why not? This is what has to be done. We're not talking about fights right now. We're just making that cordial introduction once again to each other and we're saying, 'Hey, let's let the past be the past. Let's work together for the sport.'"

Golden Boy and Top Rank haven't co-promoted a major fight in five years.

"I can't think about the past. I can't live in the future, but I want to live right now. And right now is extending that olive branch for the better of the sport. You know, let's make these fights happen. Why not? The fans deserve it. The fans want to see these fights. Let's do it. I'm telling Bob Arum, 'Hey, we can do this.' I want to give him a hug and tell him, 'Hey, thank you. Thank you for what you did throughout my whole career.' I haven't done that. I'm going to do it. And then, maybe, who knows what happens after that."

Despite*De La Hoya's push for a*positive relationship with Arum, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer has stated in several interviews on BoxingScene that he doesn't have any interest in having a working relationship with Arum.

Richard Schaefer

"That's OK, they can play those games. But what I'm doing, I'm running Golden Boy, and I think I'm doing a pretty good job, having built it into the leading boxing promotion company in the world. Last year was an all-time record year, and it did not involve Bob Arum or HBO. I'm proud of what I'm doing and I want to continue doing it."
...
"Last I checked, I was CEO," Schaefer said. "Unless Oscar wants to change that. I've been running Golden Boy since the beginning. If he wants to change that, since he's the majority shareholder, and decides he wants to fire me, I can't stop that."
...
As for De La Hoya's push, Schaefer said, "I'm the CEO. What's higher, the CEO or the president? He's the president. It says in my contract I'm the CEO and I run the business.
