Alex Ariza filed lawsuit Friday to sue Freddie Roach for defamation

By Lance Pugmire

April 11, 2014, 9:55 p.m.

LAS VEGAS -- Manny Pacquiao’s former strength and conditioning coach, Alex Ariza, has sued trainer Freddie Roach for allegedly making false and defamatory statements that Ariza “gave fighters performance-enhancing drugs.”

The lawsuit, filed Friday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, claims Roach made the statements “on or about Jan. 9” in a video interview posted on the Internet.

“As a result of this publication, [Ariza] has suffered and will continue to suffer monetary damages as well as irreversible injury to his reputation and image,” attorney Jonathan S. Milder wrote in the five-page complaint.

Justin Fortune has reunited with Pacquiao as his conditioning coach after last working with the Filipino star in 2007.

Asked about the lawsuit Friday before Pacquiao weighed in for his Saturday welterweight title fight against Timothy Bradley, Roach said, “All I’ve said is that Manny Pacquiao respects Ariza and he respects Justin Fortune and his life’s a better deal with better work. That’s the only thing I can think of.”
The lawsuit seeks punitive damages and called Roach’s statements “negligent” and “reckless,” claiming the comments were undertaken with “fraud” and “malice.”

When I do P4P I usually just try to focus on a fighters last ten fights. The thing is, you end up seeing a lot when it comes to frequency of fights and level of competition. Then I look at the weight class and see how active it is, who is doing what, how the fight was won, etc.

I wouldn't put Canelo on that list yet. Stevenson would go. Hopkins would go. Kovalev and GGG would be tied for the last spot. Honorable mention would be Lara.

1. Floyd
2. Ward
3. Rigondeaux
4. Pacquiao
5. JMM
6. Martinez
7. Stevenson
8. Bradley
9. Hopkins
10. Kovalev or GGG toss up.

ETA: So Pac DOESN'T have an exclusive deal with HBO?

I don't usually even bother making a p4p list but I think I pretty well agree with what you guys said. HW's don't usually belong in a p4p in my opinion but kinda hard not to put Klitschko in there. I would rank him above JMM actually in terms of current form and dominance.

He's gonna be the Gary Russell of heavyweights. His biggest win is going to be James Toney
Big things right around the corner:

Stiverne and Arreola are meeting for the WBC belt vacated by Vitali Klitschko, with the winner having been mandated to defend against*Deontay Wilder, last month's 96-second stoppage winner against Malik Scott.

ERISLANDY LARA TO FACE CANELO IN JULY; PULLS OUT OF ISHE SMITH CLASH
By Ben Thompson | April 13, 2014
ERISLANDY LARA TO FACE CANELO IN JULY; PULLS OUT OF ISHE SMITH CLASH

According to Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe, WBA jr. middleweight champion Erislandy Lara will no longer be defending his title against former champion Ishe Smith on May 2. Instead, the Cuban standout will face former jr. middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on July 12 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"Boxing is a business. I totally respect and understand what Lara had to do. He has to do what's best for him and his family, and that is to eat. Ishe is going to be okay. I'm on the grind now looking for an opponent," Ellerbe commented.

Canelo-Lara to fight to take place at 155lb

Canelo Lara Canelo vs. Lara saul alvarez erislandy lara By Dan Ambrose: As I expected, the July 12th fight between WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez won’t have Lara’s WBA 154lb title on the line for the fight, because Canelo doesn’t want to fight for it. So instead of this being a junior middleweight fight, it’s going to take place in the middleweight division at 155lbs.

The middleweight division weight limit is from 155-160lbs. By having it beyond the 154lb limit, it’ll make it a little – but not a lot – easier for the red-headed Canelo to make weight for the fight. In his last fight against Alfredo Angulo last March, Canelo had the weight increased to 155 after he started having problems getting down to the 154lb limit. Canelo ended up rehydrating 20lbs to 175lbs after making weight.

“The weight is 155 max, which we have no problem with,” said Lara’s co-manager Luis DeCubas Jr. to ESPN. “It doesn’t matter. We got the fight we wanted. We’re good to go. We got a deal in place. It’s a fight Lara has wanted. He’s been after it for a few years.”

Canelo seems to be getting his feet wet in the middleweight division by tip-toeing into the division by small increments instead of moving up all at once. What does seem a little off-putting, though, is that Canelo is fighting junior middleweights in the middleweight division instead of him facing legit middleweights.

We saw Canelo doing something similar to this when he moved up to the junior middleweight division from the welterweight division. For a long period of time, Canelo was still fighting welterweights instead of the top junior middleweights.

It’s only now where he’s sort of fighting junior middleweights. Canelo’s last fight was against welterweight Floyd Mayweather Jr., who beat him pretty easily. Canelo is hoping to use the Lara fight as a warm-up to get him ready to face the winner of the Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez fight in the middleweight division. Those two fighters are facing each other on June 7th at Madison Square Garden. It’s probably not realistic that Canelo will get a fight against Sergio if he beats Cotto, due to Sergio fighting on HBO and Canelo on Showtime.

That’s why Canelo is likely hoping that Cotto beats Sergio, because that would put him into position for him to get a fight against him later this year, if Canelo gets past Lara on July 12th.

A loss for Canelo against Lara will mess up his plans in a big way to get a fight against Cotto or a rematch with Mayweather. Canelo would have to go back into the rebuilding stage of his career by fighting someone like Alfredo Angulo again, and hope that he can quickly work his way back into the bigger fights.

Depending on how badly Lara beats him, Canelo might be wise to try his luck with a rematch to see if he can somehow get a decision against him. If he were to take the fight to San Antonio, Texas, he might get lucky like he did when he was given a decision over Austin Trout over there last year.

Santa Cruz: I’ll fight Carl Frampton in Belfast
April 14th, 2014 | Post Comment - 16 Comments

Leo Santa Cruz Frampton Santa Cruz Frampton vs. Santa Cruz carl frampton By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (27-0-1, 15 KO’s) is interested in traveling to Belfast to defend his title against his No.1 WBC mandatory challenger Carl Frampton over there in his home city this July for the right money. Santa Cruz, 25, doesn’t see the 5’6” Frampton as a threat to him, so he’s willing to go over there and knock him out in front of his own Irish fans in July.

In other words, Santa Cruz isn’t worried about being robbed by the judges, as he intends on leaving them with nothing to do but to watch the spectacle.

“I will fight Frampton in Belfast,” Santa Cruz said to the Belfast Telegraph. “He is my number one choice and I want to defend my title in July. I will get the biggest purse of my career.”

Frampton’s management is going to need to come up with the money to lure Santa Cruz over to the UK, because he’s not going to leave the USA to fight for nothing. They’re going to have to come up with some serious green to get Santa Cruz to give up his home country advantage, because a Santa Cruz vs. Frampton fight would be a nice little undercard fight on one of Showtime’s cards in the U.S. I could see it as the third fight on Floyd Mayweather or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez pay-per-view card.

“If Santa Cruz is genuine about coming to Belfast, and I have no reason to doubt him, then I will make him an offer he can’t refuse to come fight Carl in Belfast,” said Frampton’s manager Barry McGuigan. “I would clearly love the fight to be in Belfast and I am pleased to hear that Santa Cruz is willing to come.”

McGuigan sure does seem eager to get Santa Cruz over to Belfast, doesn’t he? What’s the problem with him traveling to the U.S to fight Santa Cruz over there? Is he worried about Frampton not being able to perform away from Belfast? I mean, if Frampton is any good, he should be able to beat guys out of his own home country, so why does he need to fight over there all the time?

Frampton’s going to have to come out of the UK sooner or later to fight someone. But then again, WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux, who is clearly the best fighter in the 122lb division by far, is also winning to travel to the UK to whip Frampton in Belfast. However, there’s not been any interest from Frampton’s management as of yet to take on that talent.

Frampton’s management may have enough money to continually drag the best fighters in the division over to the UK to fight him there rather than him having to fight in some other country where the crowd will be hostile towards him.

Santa Cruz is one of those types of talents who can win anywhere, as he brings his own judges with him in the form of his two fists. He does not care too much about the judges because there’s no way they can botch up his fights because he beats his opponents badly.

Canelo vs. Lara = 50-50 fight, says Schaefer

Canelo Lara Canelo vs. Lara saul alvarez erislandy lara By Dan Ambrose: Yesterday, WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) both revealed that they’ll be facing each other on July 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. They both want to give boxing fans the fight that they most want to see, and that’s why they’ve agreed to face each other in this pay-per-view fight on Showtime. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says he sees this fight as a tossup fight, and he’s unable to pick the winner.

“It’s a 50-50 fight,” Schaefer said to RingTV. “The two best junior middleweights not named Mayweather, fighting each other.”

Of course, Schaefer is going to say that, because he promotes both fighters, and he doesn’t want to anger either of them by saying who he really feels will be winning this fight.

Canelo is the one that wanted to take this fight, as he really didn’t have to. Golden Boy Promotions would have happily matched him against the light hitting IBF 154lb champion Carlos Molina or one of the other champions like WBO junior middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade. But Caneo wanted to fight the best in Lara, presumably to make boxing fans forget about his embarrassing loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. from last year.

With the way that Canelo got completely schooled by Mayweather in that fight, it’s going to take a big win over someone like Lara to make people forget about that fight.

I don’t consider the Canelo-Lara fight a 50-50 one like Schaefer does. To me, I see the clear advantage going to Lara by a considerable margin. Canelo is too flat-footed, too heavy, and too slow on his feet for him to compete with a highly skilled fighter like Lara. The only way I see Canelo winning this fight is if we see scoring like we saw in Canelo’s win over Austin Trout last year at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, where the judges were giving Canelo round after round despite the fact that he was getting badly out-worked by Trout. If that’s the kind of scoring that we’re going to see in the Canelo-Lara fight, then Lara virtually has no chance of winning unless he knocks Canelo out cold in the fight.

Lara isn’t a knockout puncher, but he might want to focus on developing his power for this fight because he might need it. It’s too bad there’s no open scoring in this fight like there was in the Canelo-Trout fight. At least with open scoring, the two fighters would know where they stand in the fight and can make adjustments if they fall behind. I have a strong feeling we’re going to see some very, very odd scores from the judges in this fight.

Canelo had the junior middleweight weight limit increased for his last fight against Alfredo Angulo after struggling to make weight for the fight. The fight was then held at middleweight, and Canelo rehydrated to 175lbs, which is how much light heavyweights weigh for their fights.

Canelo says he’s not interested in fighting for the WBA 154lb title, so that makes me wonder if this is going to be another fight where Canelo comes in over 154 at the weigh-in. Lara isn’t a middleweight, and he’s not someone who rehydrates to nearly 180. If Canelo can’t make weight for the fight to face Lara at 154, then he might as well be fighting in the middleweight division against the likes of Gennady Golovkin.

Felix Trinidad is reportedly broke

Felix "Tito" Trinidad, one of the most popular boxing stars in recent memory, is reportedly broke at age 41, with an aide reportedly squandering over $63 million.

According to a report in Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia, Felix "Tito" Trinidad, the most popular Puerto Rican boxing star of his generation, and the fight that all Puerto Rican fighters since his prime have been measured against, is broke.

From RingTV.com's Diego Morilla:

Former three-division champion Felix "Tito" Trinidad is broke and seeking court-mandated relief on his personal debt after finding out that his top aide, Jose "Pepe" Ramos, squandered over $63 million on now-worthless government bonds.

... Even though Ramos supposedly had a very specific mandate to make the most conservative possible investments to protect that fund, he instead reportedly gambled heavily on Puerto Rican government bonds, which were recently downgraded to "junk bond" status. The beleaguered island-state (a "free-associated state" of the United States) is currently under enormous financial stress, and most of the local financial industry is in turmoil.

The 41-year-old Trinidad, who last fought in 2008, told El Nuevo Dia:

"I appreciate the calls of affection and concern from all the press, friends, family, and my people. I just want to let you know that it is a very difficult situation, and we will be discussing this issue in the appropriate fora."

Trinidad retired a couple of times in his career, and has a standing record of 42-3 (35 KO), with titles held at 147, 154, and 160 pounds. His three losses came in 2001 against Bernard Hopkins, 2005 against Winky Wright, and 2008 against Roy Jones Jr in a novelty fight at a 170-pound catchweight, where the naturally smaller Trinidad looked truly shot, with Jones easily overpowering him and fighting down the stretch as if it were more exhibition than competition, which in hindsight, it was.

That fight landed Trinidad his largest-ever purse at $15 million, however, and did good pay-per-view numbers, too. Even after three years off following a one-sided loss to Wright, well past his prime, and fighting a guy who was just too big, Trinidad's popularity was still evident. Tito sold that fight, not Jones, who hadn't sold a fight in years, and really hasn't sold one since.

Could this lead to another Trinidad comeback? Never say never. He's not that old at 41, and there might be something out there for him, something as sort of an old timers' circuit style event. Personally, I'd hope there's a way around it that doesn't involve fighting again, because it's just not a good idea, most likely, but crazier comebacks have happened.
