Hopkins must beat Murat for superfight

I didn't want to be rude, or a know-it-all, like one of these pundits who signs off on all boxing matches and comes off as if they think they know better than the promoters, the matchmakers and sometimes the fighters themselves. But I had to admit to Bernard Hopkins, the ageless wonder from Philadelphia who flies under the radar somewhat in the whole-of-sports spectrum, but is still a stunning performer at an age where he has no business being active, let alone fighting at a Hall of Fame level, that I wasn't excited with his July 13 fight.

No disrespect intended to Karo Murat, the man who will glove up against Hopkins at Barclays Center, but I just think that at this stage of his career, he deserves nothing but meaningful fights. Hopkins (53-6-2 with 32 KOs) has earned, with his excellence and longevity, to face only the best and brightest boxers ... or, frankly, to fight whoever the heck he wants to at this juncture. If Hopkins made it clear on the down low that he wants to ease back some, take an easier schedule, not try to climb Everest and set his sights on shorter mountains, who am I to quibble?

So, with that in mind, I gingerly told Hopkins that I was a bit bummed that he wouldn't be facing off with another person who the smart money thinks will beat him. I braced for blowback...

"You sound like me," he answered, referencing his Wednesday media luncheon in NYC, which I couldn't attend, because my oldest daughter needed to get her conjunctivitis treated. "I've been craving one of those fights I haven't had since I fought my now partner, Oscar De La Hoya [in 2004]. That's not one hundred percent why I'm in the game but..."

Hopkins explained that he didn't have his sights set on Murat, a 25-1-1 German resident whose resume doesn't suggest he should be getting a crack at the legend. But all the logical suspects were booked up, or otherwise detained. So he kept his promise to the IBF, whose light heavyweight belt he holds, after snagging it from Tavoris Cloud in his last outing, at Barclays, on March 9. The IBF asked him nicely to please fight the mandatory tittle defense in timely fashion if he should beat Cloud, and that he did, confounding yet again many folks who should know better, who should by now know that to bet against Hopkins is like practicing your karate kicks on a beehive: you might get away with it once, but it just ain't wise.

Hopkins, who has become an indispensable consigliere to Golden Boy day-to-day boss Richard Schaefer in the last few years, showed his promoter chops when he told me that Murat is a not a gimme opponent. He said that anytime a 29 year-old fights a 48 year-old, the younger man has a solid chance to win. I'm dubious, as I saw no reason on March 9 to think Hopkins has slipped an iota. But his promoter-speak does pass the sniff test when he notes that the joint will be fairly filled with folks on July 13 who will attend to see if Father Time has finally laid his greedy hands on Hopkins, and removed the force field which keeps him from deteriorating.

I'd be engaging in false hype if I told you that there was a possibility that Hopkins looks past Murat, and that is one reason to hit Barclays on July 13. He knows that a loss to this pretty mediocre man messes up his plan to have at least one more superfight -- I am a one-man drum-band lobbying for it to be against Andre Ward at a catchweight -- and won't fall prey to that.

"The stakes are raised, because if I lose, then a superfight is out the window," he said, in closing.

HBO Sports executive Kery Davis, a main figure in their boxing programming for the last 16 years, is leaving his post.

HBO Sports senior vice president Kery Davis, who has been with the company since 1997 and in his current spot since 2000, is leaving the American TV boxing leader for another opportunity, which he would not discuss other than the fact that it's not boxing-related, another shakeup at HBO, which has been undergoing a ton of major changes in the last year and change.

Davis, 54, has been a major figure in the boxing programming at HBO, which has more recently been met with major competition from Showtime Sports, as Showtime has aligned with Golden Boy Promotions and Al Haymon, while HBO, under Ken Hershman, has gone with Top Rank and other promoters like Lou DiBella, Goossen Tutor, Gary Shaw, and others.

It's difficult to know what to expect from this loss, but writing it off as nothing would be foolish. Davis has been a key cog at HBO for well over a decade now, and any time you lose someone with his experience, it's a blow.

Davis will be with HBO through the end of June. There is some speculation that Davis was forced out -- he's known to be close with Golden Boy and Haymon, for instance -- but Davis denies that claim. No replacement has been named.

Dawson is still the lineal champion at 175 fighting a guy with a lot of power so its a good fight.

Froch Kessler was garbage?! Lol it was a great fight. Plus HBO didn't have to pay shit for it since it was a European fight that was aired on Sky Sports and the likes in Europe. It was dope HBO gave people the opportunity to watch a highly anticipated rematch. The ratings were 1.1 million which is solid.

HBO is in trouble and dumb as Hell for not doing business with GBP. Just think about how wack the fight game is going to be with all of the big fights on Showtime. Lampley is going to be so bitter talking about Canelo vs. Mayweather, remember him and Larry Merchant said the fight wouldn't happen. Lol. I want to see the show more then their up coming fights. SMH Manny got Ko'ed now HBO is second to Showtime in boxing too funny.

Eventually, but they've been putting on cards without each other for quite some time now. That won't change. It's more likely that HBO needs GBP and and Showtime could benefit from TR fighters being on there. But again, each promoter was kinda heading that way anyways. If anything, it's HBO that kinda needs GBP (especially losing Mayweather that doesn't help)

I'm fully aware of that. Showtime was hardly putting on any TR fights. They also could feature the other promo firms that aren't TR right now as well but GBP has so many fighters, they have a ton of fights on deck that are only GBP right now. Doesn't have to stay that way forever. I think HBO will combat that by trying to get fighter contracts to guys like Golovkin, Martinez, Garcia etc... Even if it's just a one or two fight deal, it keeps them from Showtime

GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS TO RESTRUCTURE STAFF
By Press Release | June 07, 2013

During what most thought would be a normal fight week for Golden Boy Promotions came a surprise when Chief Executive Officer Richard Schaefer called a staff meeting to announce several changes to the Los Angeles based company's staff. During the meeting, he announced that after six years of service, COO David Itskowitch has decided to leave the company in search of other opportunities and, as a result, boxing's leading promoter will be making several staffing changes including that current CMO Bruce Binkow will now also serve as COO and that long time Golden Boy VP of Operations Armando Gaytan will assume the newly created position of Deputy Chief Operating Officer and will also be named Senior Vice President of Operations. Other changes include Chief of Staff Robert Gasparri also taking on the role of VP of Operations, Outside Counsel Arnold Joseph joining the staff full time as General Counsel, Director of Communications and Events Monica Sears being promoted to VP of Operations and Digital Marketing Coordinator Nicole Sparks moving up to Director of Marketing. Assuming the public relations functions that Sears will leave behind will be former Golden Boy staffer Marylyn Aceves who will rejoin the company to take the newly created position of VP of Public Relations.

Said Richard Schaefer: "Given his contributions to Golden Boy Promotions over the past six years, David Itskowitch's departure from the company is significant and he will be missed, but with the restructuring we have implemented installing Bruce Binkow as the COO/CMO and promoting Armando Gaytan to Deputy COO/SVP of Operations, coupled with the top notch staff that we have in place, we will have a smooth transition that will ensure the continued success of Golden Boy Promotions. I have every confidence that we will grow and thrive in the coming years as we have since the company was founded."

"It has been an extremely rewarding six years working with Oscar, Richard and all of my colleagues at Golden Boy Promotions, who have become a second family to me," said David Itskowitch. "However, at this stage of my career, I've decided that it is time for me to explore other opportunities in the sports world."

"I'm extremely excited about taking on the added responsibilities of the role of Chief Operating Officer, said Bruce Binkow. "While Dave is leaving behind big shoes to fill, I'm confident that with the promotions and staff augmentations that have been implemented, we won't miss a beat."

Itskowitch will remain with the company until July 31 in order to assist with the transition of his duties to others on the staff.

Aceves will officially assume her position on June 10 while Joseph will come aboard full time on September 1 and will relocate from Philadelphia to Los Angeles.
