Pascal defeats Kuziemski, but injures shoulder
Boxing article posted on December 14th, 2012 | Post Comment

By Jim Dower: Coming off of a long layoff of over a year and a half former WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (27-2-1, 16 KO’s) defeated 35-year-old Aleksy Kuziemski (23-5, 7 KO’s) by a 10 round unanimous decision on Friday night at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada.

The final judges scores were 100-88, 98-90 and 98-90. What made this especially impressive for Pascal was that he fought with only his right hand from the midpoint of the 4th round for the remainder of the fight after getting his left arm caught on the ring support strap while attempting to throw a left hook in that round.

Pascal was able to get around this problem by changing stance from the orthodox to southpaw and going right hand happy against the over-matched Kuziemski.

Pascal knocked Kuziemski down twice in the fight, once in the 6th round and another time at the start of the 10th. The knockdown in the 6th came late in the round when Kuziemski made a dumb mistake of trying to pull up his trunks and then his turning his back on Pascal and walking away from him, as if Pascal wouldn’t do anything. Pascal took advantage of this by charging Kuziemski and hitting him with several hard right hands that dropped him.

Late in the 7th, Pascal hurt Kuziemski when he attempted to touch glove with Pascal after hitting on the break. Instead of touching gloves out of courtesy, Pascal ignored the gesture from Kuziemski and charged him, hitting him with a flurry of right hands that staggered him.

In the 10th, Pascal knocked Kuziemski down with a big right hand at the start of the round that send Kuziemski staggering backwards and then falling on the canvas.

Overall, Pascal looked pretty good but he was awfully easy to hit and I don’t think he would do well against some of the top light heavyweights in the division like Tavoris Cloud if he fights like this.

Pascal will now be facing WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson in a rematch on March 23rd.

Manny Pacquiao - "it Was A Lucky Punch

Pacquiao, who was recently quoted by USA Today, spoke out on what he remembers of the knockout. "I remember (hitting the canvas). My head dropped... boom!" stated Pacquiao, adding: "But I feel good."

Although Pacquiao feels it was a lucky punch, he still gives Marquez credit for the victory. "He just got lucky with that one punch. It made good impact because my face was going forward - it was all timing," stated Pacquiao to the publication, adding: "He threw the punch without looking; he was surprised (it landed). But give him credit.''

Brook vs. Alexander heading to Detroit in late February or early March
Boxing article posted on December 15th, 2012 | Post Comment

Brook Alexander Brook vs. Alexander kell brook devon alexander By Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KO’s) and his British opponent Kell Brook (29-0, 19 KO’s) will be landing in Detroit in either February or March, according to LA Times writer Lance Pugmire.

Pugmire said on his twitter “Devon Alexander-Brook fight going to Detroit along with K9-Ishe Smith in late Feb-early March, possibly at Fox Theater, [Richard] Schaefer tells me.”

Like the previous venue [Los Angeles] that the Brook-Alexander fight was mentioned as taking place, Detroit will be a neutral venue whether neither fighter has an advantage of a disadvantage. I’m still trying to figure out why Golden Boy Promotions will be putting the fight there because it doesn’t make sense at all. Who is going to want to show up to see Alexander and Brook fight in Detroit?

The only logical place for the fight to be staged where it makes any kind of good money is in Alexander’s home city of St. Louis, Missouri. Alexander fights in front of huge crowds of 10,000 fans when he fights in St. Louis, and at least if they fought there the two fighters could get some good money from the gate. But I guess Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn wants a neutral venue so that Brook doesn’t have to face a loud hostile crowd.

The way I see it if Brook is really all that good like Hearn thinks he is then he should be okay with fighting Alexander in his home city, right? Shouldn’t Brook be able to beat Alexander anywhere on Earth if he’s really better than him? I have a feeling that there’s some doubt there on Brook and Hearn’s part about Brook’s chances against the talented Alexander.

I see no advantage to putting the Alexander vs. Brook fight in Detroit. Heck, they might as well not even have the fight at all if that’s where it’s going to take place because I doubt the fight will draw even 2000 fans. Brook and Hearn just need to see the light and agree to fight Alexander in St Louis and be happy they’re getting to fight this talent at all in the first place. That’s where the fight needs to be, and Brook just needs to say yes already so those guys can make some decent money for this fight.

Purses: Donaire $1 million, Arce $800,000
Boxing article posted on December 15th, 2012 | Post Comment

Donaire Arce Donaire vs. Arce nonito donaire jorge arce By Chris Williams: You can see why Jorge Arce (61-6-2, 46 KO’s) was so eager to get a fight with WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (30-1, 19 KO’s) when you look at the purse that the 33-year-old Arce will be getting to take on Donaire on HBO at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Arce will receive $800,000, whereas Donaire will make $1 million for the fight.

That’s excellent money for Arce, especially when he really hasn’t done much lately to really deserve the fight in terms of beating anyone worth mentioning. Arce looked absolutely 100% horrible earlier this year in his fight with Jesus M Rojas. That was the fight that Arce fell down in the 2nd round and didn’t get back up, complaining that his ear hurt after getting hit on the side of the head by Rojas, who was dominating the action in that round.

It looked like Arce didn’t want any more from Rojas, and I don’t blame him. I didn’t think Arce would have lasted for very much longer in that fight, and the thing of it is Rojas, 25, is just a young kid from Puerto Rico.

I just hope Arce doesn’t fall down early against Donaire and complain that his ear hurts or some other body part because there are a lot of people looking forward to this fight card for some reason. I’m not one of them because I recognize a terrible mismatch when I see one.

Donaire seems to be fighting everyone but the guys that boxing fans to see him fight. They want to see Donaire fight Abner Mares and to a lesser extent Guillermo Rigondeaux, but instead he’s being matched against guys like Jeffrey Mathebula, Toshiaki Nishioka, who Donaire said was the best fighter in the super bantamweight division, Omar Narvaez, and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.

Donaire’s fight against Arce is pretty much going to be just a formality. Arce is too small for the super bantamweight division, and he’s out of his league in this fight. If he were like three inches taller with an extra three inches in each, faster, and younger then I’d give him a chance against Donaire. But he’s too old, too shot, and too slow to win.

This fight card was badly crippled this week when the fight between Rigondeaux and Poonsawat Kratingdeaenggym was pulled from the card after Poonsawat failed a medical exam for the fight. This was really bad news because this honestly was going to be the only decent quality fight on the entire card, and with that fight cancelled it leaves on the Arce vs. Donaire mismatch.

I think it's still too early for broner to be in the top 5 but only time will tell for him
Broner and Canelo are in my top 10 more for my take on what they bring and what they will do for boxing. They are both extraordinary talents and are the future of boxing. They both have the biggest upside in boxing of all the young cats. I think they deserve their spots. Got Em!!

Its your list so that's your opinion but imo pound 4pound is about what you've done not what u think someone will do in the future. Canelo & broner are great talents but neither have accomplished much at all, especially Canelo. Broner at least beat the #1 guy in his division, Canelo on the otherhand has only beat one fighter ranked in the top ten in his division and that was Ryan Rhodes who was #7 at the time.

I would have something like:

1. Ward
2. Floyd
3. Marquez
4. Donaire
5. Martinez
6. Pacquiao
7. Wlad
8. Mares
9. Bradley
10. Froch

So then why is Pacquiao in your top 10? His last three fight have been L's. That is not top 10 in my opinion.

Ive seen Broner on a lot of professional top 10 list but not Canelo. Broner for sure belongs. Again I added Canelo because I think he is a dominant talent and a p4p list should also include who u feel is the best. I know he hasnt really beaten anyone and I am first to say that but I feel sumthin special about him and I dont think there are 10 fighters better than him. Got Em!!

My P4P list

1. Mayweather-He is the King until dethroned the inside fighting he showed against Cotto proved he's still P4P #1

2. Ward-Great win against Dawson but will have to move up to 175lb soon.

3. Martinez-He beat the brakes off Chavez Jr, but he also got dropped and hurt in the 12th.

4. Marquez-KO'ed Manny at 39 years olds with his trademark counter right hook.

5. Donaire-4 fights in 2012 all against different styles and 2 great KO's.

6. Both K-Brothers-They run a weak heavyweight division.

7. Mares-beat the best at 115lb Perez, Vic Darchinyan, Agbeko 2x, and Moreno at 122.

8. Bradley-Great championship resume at 140lb, and he beat Manny in a close fight at 147lb.

9. Froch-Good run at 168lb lost to only Kessler in a close fight and beat up easily by Ward, but he put overhyped Bute to sleep.

10. Broner-Since the Ponce De Leon fight he has improved greatly getting better every fight with 5 KO wins in a row. He moved up to 135lb and manhandled the #1 guy DeMarco

Donaire: I can adapt to anything Mares or Rigondeaux does in the ring
Boxing article posted on December 17th, 2012 | Post Comment

nonito donaire guillermo rigondeaux abner mares By Chris Williams: WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-1, 20 KO’s) may be about to step it up a level and face either WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares or WBA champ Guillermo Rigondeaux. Donaire, 30, says he’ll leave it up to his management team to determine who he’ll be fighting next, but he definitely wants Mares as his next opponent.

Donaire said to eastsideboxing.com “I’m a very versatile fighter. I can fight in multiple styles. The style that I’m fighting with at this time, being smart and setting my shots up properly, anyone will fall…it doesn’t matter who it is…Mares would probably try to smother me…Rigondeaux would more than likely try to box me.”

I’d be surprised if Top Rank promoter Bob Arum chose to match Donaire up against either Rigondeaux or Mares, because the chances would be too high that those guys would beat Donaire and wreck the chances of a Donaire gravy train. Arum’s #1 fighter Manny Pacquiao is getting old, and we just saw him get knocked cold.

That fight showed that Pacquiao isn’t going to be around for too much longer, because he’s now taking loses and getting dropped. There has to be a fighter that takes over for Pacquiao in bringing in the Filipino boxing fans in high numbers, and right now Donaire is probably the #2 most popular Filipino fighter after Pacquiao. But once Pacquiao gone, Donaire will move up to the #1 spot, but it won’t be good if Donaire faces Mare and/or Rigondeaux and gets whipped before that happens.

That would create a situation where Donaire would have to fight a rematch with the guy that beat him, and if he gets beaten a second time by Mares or Rigondeaux then Donaire will be a much weaker gravy trainer fighter than he would be if he were to be steered around those guys and matched against more older or smaller guys like Toshiaki Nishioka and Jorge Arce.

Donaire destroyed Arce last Saturday night in a 3rd round knockout win, but the boxing world already had written this fight off as a terrible mismatch well ahead of the fight, so it wasn’t any kind of surprise that Donaire was able to beat an old small guy like Arce.

Right now Donaire’s confidence is sky-high from all the over-matched and undersized opposition that Arum has been feeding him, but that confidence will take a huge drop if Donaire fights Mares or Rigondeaux because I see both guys beating Donaire.
