Peterson and Khan have signed for a rematch
The Ring

Newly-crowned IBF/WBA titlewinner Lamont Peterson has agreed in principle to an HBO-televised return bout against Amir Khan, the man he dethroned last month for the belts by disputed decision, on May 19 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas, Peterson's publicist, Andre Johnson and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer both informed RingTV.com on Thursday.

"We've come to terms with Golden Boy Promotions in principle. Lamont signed a letter of agreement as of today to do a rematch with Amir Khan at the Mandalay Bay on May 19 to be televised live on HBO. This came after some long and careful consideration by Lamont and Team Peterson," said Johnson.

" Lamont had weighed every option available to him -- some public and some private. There were several options available to us in terms of fights and directions that Lamont could have taken. But at the end of the day, this made the most sense on every level across the board."

In choosing to face Khan (26-2, 18 knockouts), Peterson (29-1-1, 15 KOs) has eschewed an offer from Top Rank CEO Bob Arum for a proposed bout with RING lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez on July 14 at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium, with the winner to get a shot at that between WBO welterweight titleholder Manny Pacquiao and WBO junior welterweight beltholder Tim Bradley that is being targeted for June 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

"I confirmed that it's all signed. We have indeed reached an agreement. I believe that the rematch between Lamont and Amir is one of the most anticipated fights, and both of these young men are tremendous athletes and they gave it their all in December," said Schaefer.

"I expect that the rematch, which will take place on May 19 on HBO World Championship Boxing from the Mandalay Bay will be another terrific night of boxing. It was a hard and long negotiation, but I am glad that in the end, both fighters get the opportunity to face each other again."

Peterson defeated Khan in December at the Washington Convenction Center in Peterson's native Washington, D.C., although the WBA ordered an immediate rematch in response to an appeal by Khan.

WBA President Gilberto Mendoza granted Peterson 10 days from Jan. 14 to appeal the organization's decision, and Peterson, in turn, filed an official protest of the WBA's order, which has been dropped.

Peterson's appeal came in the wake of Golden Boy Promotions withdrawing its own filing against the IBF, a move which canceled a hearing scheduled for the next day with that organization in New Jersey.

Golden Boy and Khan had been seeking to overturn the victory or get an order for an immediate rematch on the grounds that the fight was poorly officiated and that there were scorecard descrepancies.

"The decision wasn't influenced by protests or by negative comments by the other side or any of that. The only influence was that this was the decision that best suited Lamont Peterson. Lamont took as much time as he needed to weigh every option available equally," said Johnson.

"We stacked them up against each other and weighed them across the board and then he decided what made the most sense for his future and for his career right now, and he wanted this fight."

Schaefer told RingTV.com that he offered Peterson "a 50-50 split of world wide revenues and United Kingdom revenues" in the hopes of securing a rematch with Khan.

Peterson was initially offered $1 million by Schaefer to face Khan in a return bout after having pocketed a career-best $650,000 to Khan's $1.1 million in their first bout.

"This is an opportunity for Lamont to set the record straight and to prove that he is the champion. Lamont is going to come back and prove that. People should understand that Lamont never said at any time that he would not fight Amir Khan again. If it was up to Lamont, Lamont would have fought Amir Khan the Sunday after the Saturday night fight," said Johnson.

"That's how much Lamont wanted this fight. But boxing is a business, and it was important to Lamont to weigh every option that was before him and made available to him before he made his final decision. On behalf of Lamont and Team Peterson, I'm here to say on behalf Lamont Peterson as the IBF/WBA unified world champion, that he is very comfortable and very happy with the decision he's made to do the rematch. He can't wait to fight."

Golden Boy must have offered Peterson a lot of money cuz it was looking like Peterson vs Marquez was all about a done deal.

Which leaves the question....

Who is Marquez going to fight now??? Mike Alvarado? Brandon Rios (gamboa-rios isn't signed yet so JMM could swoop in and snag Rios)?

no, from what bob said he's still planning on having Marquez in July at the Cowboys stadium. Also Bradley officially signed the contract just last night.

Robert Guerrero I think makes the most sense, however he's golden boy so I'm not sure if that is going to happen. Brandon Rios said he wants to fight. He said he's still planning on fighting Gamboa in April and said he would love to fight Marquez in July.

He will run," says Pacquiao about Bradley

By Vitali Shaposhnikov: It is that time again, the time to talk about Manny Pacquiao and his next opponent Timothy Bradley.

First of all, I would like to say that Bradley is a tremendous fighter, and that I have all the respect for him and his achievement in the sport thus far. He is quick, aggressive, and very versatile in the ring. He lives up to his nickname of the Desert Storm because when facing Bradley, he will make sure to be in your face and after you from bell to bell. Defensively he is also pretty amazing, kind of like Joshua Clottey but with the ability to fight back!

Having said that, while many people expect a war, I don’t. The reason Juan Manuel Marquez was able to go to war with Manny, was due to his experience and unparalleled ring I.Q. Bradley does not have that, instead he compensates with his overwhelming physical attributers. One thing to keep in mind is that Manny himself is freakishly strong and fast, and it is highly unlikely that he would lose to Bradley if they engaged in an exchange.

I think that Manny will dominate the fight, and maybe even send Bradley to the canvas causing an early end to the fight. Smart cautious fighters are the ones that can beat Manny, not the aggressive ones.

"Tatakbo 'yan (He will run)," said Pacquiao.

In response to what Manny thinks about Bradley’s head-butts, Manny said: “Madumi nga (Yes, he's dirty). Napapansin ko nga. Gumagamit ng ulo (I've noticed it. He uses his head).

Pacquiao has never said anything negative about any of his opposition, but in Bradley’s case, he expects the unbeaten champion to run. I would have to agree with Manny on his early prediction: as soon as Bradley realizes what Manny’s power tastes like, as Mosley did, he will back up and start fighting in a very cautions, defensive fashion.

I am buying into the hype, and cant wait to see Bradley’s skills tested. In any case, I always remember that boxing is boxing, and anything can happen at any point in the fight, to anyone.

Bernard Hopkins says he’ll have a big party after Dawson fight on April 28th
February 10th, 2012

By Dan Ambrose: 47-yer-old WBC light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KO’s) says he plans on having a big after party following his April 28th title defense against former two-time World Boxing Council light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (30-1, 17 KO’s) on April 28th at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Hopkins said this on his twitter: “We will have a big after party in AC [Atlantic City] 4-28…Training. LOL! I don’t need much. Chad Dawson is my [opponent]. Chad has no brains.”

It sounds like Hopkins is a little overconfident for this fight, as if the win is already in the bag. It’s hard to imagine that Hopkins really believes he’ll easily beat Dawson because Hopkins wasn’t looking good in the two rounds of action against Dawson last October in a fight that ended in the 2nd when Dawson fell over the back of Dawson after missing a punch and then was lifted up and dropped on the canvas.

Hopkins injured his left shoulder in the fall and the fight was ruled a 2nd round TKO win for Dawson. Hopkins then appealed to the World Boxing Council and the California State Athletic Commission, both of which ruled the fight was a no contest. This allowed Hopkins to keep his WBC strap. However, Dawson was able to land a rematch after his promoter Gary Shaw appealed to the WBC to have an immediate rematch and it was granted.

Hopkins has often been the bigger guy in many of his fights during his career, but against Dawson, Hopkins was smaller, slower and less quick on his feet. Things didn’t look good for Hopkins at the time he suffered the injury to his shoulder. Some boxing fans felt he faked the injury to get out of a hard fight that might not have gone his way had it lasted the full 12 rounds.

As for Hopkins’ after party on April 28th, it might be a sorrowful party of Hopkins gets beat like I think he will. He’s gotten too old and will be facing a more talented fighter who’s a lot younger than him. I can see Hopkins getting injured again if things go badly for him and he starts getting dominated by Dawson on April 28th.

Bradley to get about $5 million for Pacquiao fight
February 10th, 2012

By Chris Williams: As it turns out, WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (28-0, 12 KO’s) made the right move to turn down the $1 million + offer to fight former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan last year, because Bradley is set to make about $5 million smackers against WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao on June 9th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

LA Times writer Lance Pugmire said “Promoter Bob Arum said there was no reason to doubt that Bradley will have around the same $5 million guarantee that Pacquiao’s most recent two opponents had.”

Wow! So Bradley is going to make five times the amount he would have received had he fought Khan. Does anyone now doubt that Bradley made the right move in skipping the fight against the hit and run Khan? It was a smart move by Bradley.

Bradley’s biggest paydays of his career came against Devon Alexander and 40-year-old Joel Casamayor in his last two fights, both of which netted Bradley a little over $1 million apiece. It’s obviously but not so good in comparison to the cash he’s going to get for the Pacquiao fight.

Bradley made his own opportunities when he left his former promoter Gary Shaw and signed with Top Rank Promotions. This then made it easy for Top Rank president Bob Arum to set up one of his usual in house fights, because Arum has almost completely run out of Top rank fighters to put in with Pacquiao. It’s down to Brandon Rios, Mike Jones [who may be too big], Miguel Cotto and Bradley. I suspect Rios, Jones and Cotto will all get a shot against Pacquiao before he retires but for now it’s going to be Bradley that gets the $5 million payday.

Arum was kind of stuck with Bradley, however, because the opponent that he wanted, Cotto, refused to weaken himself by going down to 147lbs to fight Pacquiao. With Cotto refusing to melt down, Pacquiao opted not to meet him at a catchweight of a 150. This left Arum with few choices. Lamont Peterson was mentioned as a possible Pacquiao opponent, but he’s not a Top Rank guy and doesn’t have much of a following. It was probably him not being a Top Rank guy that get him dismissed in the Pacquiao lottery.

Khan: I’m going to hit and run against Peterson; I won’t let him work on the inside
February 10th, 2012

By William Mackay: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan gave a brief glimpse on Sky Sports Ringside on Thursday in how he intends on fighting IBF/WBA light welterweight champ Lamont Peterson in their rematch on May 19th at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Khan intends on trying to keep the fight on the outside as much as possible by hitting, moving and keeping Peterson away from the inside.

Khan said “Hit, move, keep your distance, that’s what we are going to be working on; I’m sure Freddie [Roach] has a strategy how to beat him…Maybe there will come a time in the fight we have to fight inside but mainly we want to be on the outside working long…He’ll [Peterson] probably want to stay close to me, working the inside for them looping shots, so we need to do is maybe work the angles.”

Khan also mentioned that when he does have to fight on the inside,
he’ll focus on throwing a lot more uppercuts this time around and he won’t just cover up like he was doing like last time. That could be a bad thing for Khan, because if he’s throwing punches, he’ll open up his midsection more to Peterson, who had no problems taking Khan’s punches and firing back his own.

It sounds great what Khan is talking about, but in reality I don’t know that he’s going to be able to throw punches with Peterson attacking his body. Khan seemed to be really bothered by Peterson’s body punching, and that was obviously one of the biggest reasons why he was on his bike moving so much in order to escape the constant pressure.

Khan says he won’t be pushing in the rematch because he doesn’t want to give the referee any excuse to take away points. Somehow, I find that hard to believe. I can’t see Khan not pushing because it’s so much part of his game. Khan is like a person addicted to smoking. They may say they won’t smoke, but once they’re under stress and they have that urge, you’ll see that cigarette in their mouth and them puffing away as usual.

Khan didn’t say anything about whether he would be refraining from pulling down on Peterson’s head, which was another fouling move that he used constantly in the Peterson fight last December. It’s the same thing with the shoving. Khan can say he won’t do it, but believe me, you’ll see Khan with both gloves yanking down on Peterson’s head all night long each time Peterson gets near him.

Even if the referee tells Khan to quit, he’ll probably keep doing it because he’s not someone that really learns in the ring like more intelligent fighters. I think with Khan you really have to shock him to get him to stop with a bad habit. If Roach was a good trainer, he would have some kind of pain mechanism he’d use during training camp to make Khan feel the consequences of using one of his fouling techniques.

Rafael: HBO not interested in Bute vs. Froch
February 10th, 2012

By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like SHOWTIME isn’t the only U.S cable television network that isn’t interested in televising the Carl Froch vs. Lucian Bute bout. HBO also has no interest in showing this fight to U.S fans, according to Dan Rafael at ESPN.

Rafael said this: “The network [Showtime] isn’t interested in the Bute-Froch fight, going so far as to give him [Bute] permission to shop the bout elsewhere, including HBO, which was also no interested.”

Ouch! I can’t say I blame HBO for not being interested in the Froch vs. Bute fight, because Froch just got beat, and who wants to see him get beat again by the Canadian based Bute, whose best best opponent during his entire career is 42-year-old Glen Johnson.

IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute is stubbornly still interested in facing the recently beaten Froch rather than someone that’s winning like Andre Dirrell. It’s disappointing because it means that neither HBO nor Showtime will be televising Bute’s next fight in the U.S as long as he’s committed to fighting Froch.

Bute and his promoter InterBox were hoping that Showtime would be up for televising his hoped for next fight against Froch, but they’ve been met with a cold shoulder from Showtime. The problem here is that there’s no real interest from American boxing fans to see Froch face Bute due to Froch’s one-side 12 round decision loss to Andre Ward last December.

When a fighter loses as bad as Froch did against Ward, American boxing fans aren’t thrilled at seeing that fighter in a title fight in his next bout. If Showtime was to televise the Bute-Froch fight, it would be the equivalent of them shoving Froch down the throats of U.S fans. Would British boxing fans like to see an American fighter televised in the UK if he were coming off of a one-sided loss like Froch did? I think not. I think the Brits would be up in arms if they had to sit and watch a guy that was just spanked fighting for a world title and being televised in Britain. They’d probably ignore the fight big time.

Canadians don’t seem to mind who Bute fights. They’ll watch on television in high numbers regardless because Bute is such a huge name over there. However, in the U.S, boxing fans are a lot more demanding and they don’t go for seeing guys fighting for titles after they’ve been whipped as bad as Froch did. As such, you see the cable giants – HBO and Showtime – saying no to Froch vs. Bute. If Bute and his promoters were smart, they’d forget about the Froch fight and look to put together the bout against Andre Dirrell or his brother Anthony Dirrell. Those are fights that American boxing fans would love to see and would tune in to watch in massive numbers.
