Saul “Canelo” Alvarez Crushes Kermit Cintron, Calls Out Floyd Mayweather!

James Slater: In what some experts felt would be his sternest test to date, unbeaten Mexican star Saul Alvarez rose to the occasion and scored an easy-looking 5th-round TKO over big-hitting Kermit Cintron. “Canelo,” now 39-0-1(29) dropped the Puerto Rican in the 4th and stopped him a round later last night in Mexico City. The sensational 21-year-old, who pulls in enormous viewing figures whenever he fights, retained his WBC 154-pound title for the third time.

The big news came in the post-fight interview, however. In what many fans may feel is a case of Alvarez rushing things a touch, the young warrior called out superstar and P-4-P #1 Floyd Mayweather Junior.

“Next year we want the best,” Canelo is quoted as saying by USA Today. “We want Mayweather in May. Apart from the money, we want to fight the best in the world and he’s the best pound-for-pound, so we want to fight him.”

Could the match-up really take place in as little as five months time? Mayweather, 42-0(26) wants to fight again on May 5th (with The MGM Grand in Las Vegas reportedly “on hold” for Floyd’s next bout) and unless Manny Pacquiao agrees to fight him, Mayweather will be needing a suitable opponent for Mexican independence day weekend. Who is bigger in Mexico than Alvarez?

Again, the 21-year-old may need more experience and more seasoning before going in with the sublime Mayweather, but millions of fans would flock to see if Canelo could upset the 34-year-old master (Floyd will be 35 come February). Needless to say, if Alvarez could do it he would become absolutely massive!

Interestingly, Mayweather was reportedly interested in facing a teenage Alvarez a while back. Back then the very suggestion of the match-up was looked at as way too premature, but now - maybe the timing is right?

Another exciting option for Alvarez (though no way near as big a deal), is an all-Mexican clash with unbeaten WBC middleweight titlist Julio Cesar Chavez Junior. To my mind, this fight looks far more likely to happen.

As for former IBF welterweight champ Cintron, now 33-5-1(28), the 32-year-old’s only real option is that of retirement

Exclusive Interview With Earnie Shavers - “Ron Lyle Was A Great Fighter, A Good Frien

By James Slater: As fans know, heavyweight legend Ron Lyle passed away yesterday, at the age of 70. Back in the day, Lyle fought the very best - including Ali, Foreman and Shavers. Earlier today I had the opportunity to speak with Shavers - who lost a 1975 slugfest with Lyle, by way of 6th-round TKO - and Earnie paid tribute to his rival/friend.

Here is what Shavers had to say about his fight with Lyle:

James Slater: First of all, Earnie, sorry to bother you on a Sunday, I know you are a religious man. But I take it you’ve heard about the sad death of Ron Lyle, who you had that great, great fight with in September of 1975?

Earnie Shavers: Yes, I heard. His sister called me and told me - I don’t go anywhere near the internet (laughs) - we were very good friends. I used to call him, he used to call me. I last spoke to him about two weeks ago. He was a very good man, it’s sad news that he has died.

J.S: Your fight with Lyle was an epic. I know you don’t want to say anything bad about the man, but you knocked him down in the 2nd-round - was he given a long count?

E.S: It was a long count, yeah. We all know that - it’s part of the game. I fought Ron in his hometown of Denver. The altitude was high in Denver, and I never allowed myself enough time to get acclimatised. If I had, the fight would have been a different story.

J.S: You, as one of the hardest punchers ever, when you put him down in the 2nd; did you think you had the fight won?

E.S: Oh yeah! I thought I had that fight won. But it takes two to have a fight, and he got up
and he knocked me out (in the 6th-round). But that was a great fight, and he was a great man.

J.S: After that fight, he fought George Foreman in another awesome fight, and you won five in a row and then fought Ali for the title. I know you always wanted to fight Foreman, though.

E.S: Oh, I wanted to fight Foreman! But he didn’t want to fight me. Archie Moore trained us both, and he told Foreman not to fight a puncher like me. It was a smart move and I’d have done the same thing if I was in his position.

J.S: Was the win Lyle scored over you Ron’s best-ever win?

E.S: Yeah, that was his biggest win. Lyle shook my hand after that fight. Like I say, he was always a good friend of mine.

J.S: We will never see heavyweight action like that again!

E.S: I agree. But it’s not the fighters of today’s fault. We had better trainers back then, and we had better competition. It’s not the fighters of today’s fault. It was just a different game back in Ron’s and my day. Lyle, myself and Foreman are the three hardest [heavyweight] punchers of all time!

J.S: The fans still love you and talk about you, Earnie. When are you back in the U.K?

E.S: I’ll be over there in March, on a speaking tour. I look forward to meeting all you guys! I’m sad about Ron’s death, he was a great fighter and a great friend.

Floyd Mayweather Update: “I told him [Pacquiao] May 5th is OPEN”

By Daniel Echevarria: In an interview at FIGHTHYPE, Floyd Mayweather says to Manny Pacquiao that “ I been told you May 5th was open I’m waiting let’s make it happen what’s going on.” At this point that is the million dollar question folks what is really going on after all the accusations that Mayweather was supposedly scared of Manny Pacquiao. Now very little is being said from Pacquiao’s team or his fans.

Promoter Bob Arum and trainer Freddie Roach and many diehard Pacquiao fans hinted that Mayweather was afraid to lose his perfect record against Pacquiao, but and now no one is saying anything. Well, in the interview once again Floyd is almost dumb-founded and angered about why Pacquiao can’t stand up and fight him.

On a side note pertaining to the rankings Ring Magazine still has Manny Pacquiao as the number 1 P4P fighter, but ESPN and Yahoo Sports has Floyd as the number 1 fighter in the world. Ring Magazine actually made a statement explaining why Manny Pacquiao remains at number 1, which is kind of interesting that they felt they had to write a statement to defend their own decision on their own website. Let’s see what Manny Pacquiao has to say no

Mayweather: I’m waiting for Pacquiao to sign the contract – News

By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. is dead serious about wanting to fight WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao next on May 5th next year. So serious is Mayweather that he’s telling Pacquiao to step up and sign the contract so that they can get this fight done.

Mayweather told fighthype.com “Sign the contract [Pacquiao]. I’m waiting. Now I can’t be sitting waiting all day now, You want a fight, let’s make it happen. May 5th! What’s going on? You said you were a clean athlete and you said you would take the tests and all that. Well, let’s do it.”

It remains to be seen if Pacquiao will take this fight or not, although that’s what Pacquiao says he wants to do instead of facing the unappealing task of trying to fight Juan Manuel Marquez for a fourth tie and possibly losing this time. Pacquiao needs to take the Mayweather payday fight before he gets beaten by someone else.

Pacquiao’s last fight against Marquez showed that Pacquiao is starting to lose his ability to move around the ring like he used to. It’s only a matter of time before one of the young lions takes Pacquiao down unless his promoter Bob Arum keeps matching him up with fading Top Rank stars.

Pacquiao doesn’t have much choice. He either faces Mayweather Jr now of fights a rematch against Marquez. He’ll look kind of silly if he bypasses both Mayweather and Marquez and fights one of Arum’s fighters. It’ll just look like he’d dodging both guys and no amount of excuses given will be believed by the boxing public. As bad as Pacquiao is starting to look, he really needs to sign the contract to fight Mayweather, take his loss like a man, and then try and fight Marquez for a fourth time but in Mexico.

Mayweather saw the Pacquiao-Marquez III fight and he thinks Marquez won it. But Mayweather doesn’t want to take any more risks by waiting to make the Pacquiao fight happen, because there’s too much danger now for Pacquiao to get beaten by somebody. And once Pacquiao is beaten, the money for a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight will plummet dramatically. Only with Pacquiao still winning is the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight a huge event. Pacquiao dodged a bullet when the judges gave him the decision against Marquez recently despite the boxing world seeing Marquez as the winner. But Pacquiao can’t let this happen over and over again, because fans will lose confidence him, and see him as having lost anyway.

Broner wants to unify the 130 pound titles and then move up in weight

By Dan Ambrose: 22-year-old WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (22-0, 18 KO’s) captured the World Boxing Organization title last Saturday night with an impressive 3rd round TKO of Vincente Rodriguez (34-3-1, 19 KO’s) at the U.S Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.

With this win, Broner now wants to unifiy all of the 130 pound titles and then move up to the lightweight division to chase the top names such as Brandon Rios, Ricky Burns, Miguel Vazquez, Antonio DeMarco, Robert Guerrero and Juan Manuel Marquez.

Before Broner does that, he’s looking to knock off the current super featherweight champions Juan Carlos Salgado, Jorge Solis, Takashi Ochiyama and Takahiro Aoh. Those are all beatable fighters for a talent like Broner.

He’s made his last two opponents Rodriguez and Jason Litzau looked like overmatched amateurs. Broner’s handspeed and counter punching ability make him a very tough fighter to beat this point. He seems to emulate Floyd Mayweather Jr., who by the way was at ringside to watch Broner fight against Rodriguez last Saturday night in Cincinnati.

Broner needs better opposition to get fully recognized as special. It’s not enough that he’s dominating his opposition; he’s got to face the best fighters possible for him to become a pound for pound great. Broner is currently ranked #6 in the regular super featherweight rankings for The Ring, behind Takahiro Aoh, Solis, Roman Martinez, Juan Carlos Salgago, and Takashi Uchiyama.

That will likely change in the next year or two, depending on how long it takes for Broner to get the top champions to fight him in unification bouts. He might find it nearly impossible to unify the titles because the other promoters will likely be reluctant to let their cash cows get beaten by Broner and lose that revenue stream after their fighters are exposed.
