Arum Says Floyd Mayweather Is Eyeing Erik Morales For May 5th Next Year!

By James Slater: It’s fair to say that when Floyd Mayweather’s team announced the unbeaten megastar was planning on fighting again on May 5th next year, with “the little fella” being the man “Money” wanted, so as “to give the fans the big fights they want,” promoter Bob Arum was less than impressed. The Top Rank boss laughed off talk that a Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao super-fight was on the horizon, and now we know why.

In a recent interview with The Philippine Star, the 79-year-old claimed Mayweather is actually looking at facing 35-year-old Mexican legend Erik Morales next May.

“You know who the little fella they have already approached is? It’s Erik Morales,” Arum said when speaking about Team-Mayweather. “And Erik will confirm it - absolutely. Erik has been approached to make the fight. I’m sure he’ll take it for the money. Why wouldn’t he? I don’t know who’s gonna buy it [the fight], but that’s what the whole nonsense is all about.

“They [Team-Mayweather] bullshitted the MGM to get the date, to get May 5th. So they cut us out of getting May 5th. But we don’t need May 5th because we’re not fighting a Spanish guy next. But they want May 5th because they’re fighting Morales.”

Arum said “who cares?” when asking what Mayweather’s plans are, adding that “there are some better guys out there for Manny to fight.” It sure seems as though Arum in convinced Mayweather will never face Pac-Man. But how will fans react if what Arum says regarding the Morales fight proves to be true? Would Mayweather, the king of the pay-per-views, be able to pull in over a million T.V buys for a fight against “El Terrible?”

There are so many questions regarding this (vaguely) possible fight it’s tough to know where to start. What weight would the fight take place at? Would it be for Mayweather’s WBC welterweight title or not? Would any fan or expert out there be willing to give Morales even a long-shot when it comes to winning? Would Mayweather’s popularity take a huge nosedive if he took this fight?

Morales has done incredibly well in his comeback, managing to give Marcos Maidana a real fight and then picking up the vacant WBC 140-pound belt. But for the faded warrior to get in there with the sublime, seemingly impossible to hit Mayweather and be expected to even make things competitive, there seems little chance. Mayweather, with his speed and timing, would have a field day against the slow-starting, not-all-that-fast-anyway Mexican hero.

We’ve seen quite enough sad-to-watch action involving ageing former greats just recently; boxing can do without another one-sided beat down where youth overcomes. And yes, Mayweather at age 34 is only a year younger than Morales, but we all know the four-weight Champ from Tijuana is a lot older than his birth certificate indicates. Mayweather is as fresh as a daisy by comparison!

Mayweather calls out Pacquiao

By Vitali Shaposhnikov: I have said this a long time ago as well as in my numerous recent articles within the past week: I believe that it is Manny Pacquiao who does not wish to do everything possible to make his fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. a reality.

While the back and forth between the two camps has been going on for years, the majority of the fans seem to believe camp Pacquiao’s statements, rather than those of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The main issue according to Floyd Mayweather Jr., has been his numerous requests for Pacquiao to accept his extended version of the drug testing regimen. Floyd has directly stated many times during his interviews and public appearances that he does indeed want to fight Pacquiao, if the Filipino sensation only took the test.

Despite the fact that camp Pacquiao has been trying to convince the public that they have agreed to the test before many times, I have yet to hear this come out as a clear-cut statement from Manny himself.

“We are looking for Pacquiao. We want Pacquiao to take the test. We just want to give the fans and the people around the world what they want to see,” said Floyd during his recent appearance on 106 & Park (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HISyd4oaZDc&feature=player_embedded).

When asked why he thinks that Pacquiao is taking something illegal to help with his boxing, Mayweather Jr. replied: “I never said Pacquiao was on anything. It’s just that its not natural for any athlete to come from 106lbs to 154lbs all naturally, and compete with the best fighters. I’m the face of boxing and I’m just trying to clean this sport up. I’m not just picking on one fighter: Ortiz took the test, Mosley took the test, and all I am asking Pacquiao to do is just take the test so that we could make it happen.”

Hopefully, this king of public call-out of Manny by Floyd will influence Pacman enough to separate himself from Bob Arum and stat talking to Mayweather promotions directly, paving the way for the biggest fight in recent boxing history.

This all we need to hear....

Team Floyd releases statement, mentioning the "little fella"
Uncle Roger says Floyd is focused on Pacquiao
Floyd himself goes on 106 & Park and calls Pacquiao out.

What more can Floyd do to prove that he wants to fight Pacquiao?

Mayweather not to blame for Pacquiao-Mayweather fight failing to materialize

By Robert Elmore: People are never happy with Mayweather and they are quick to blame him for the mega fight not happening between he and Manny Pacquiao. But a lot of people have come around to see the games Top Rank are playing. Rather than talk about the second and third negotiations, (because it should never gone that far) I like to give facts about the first set of negotiations. The fight should have happened in 2009. This article is no way an attempt to dis Pac and the Gang or side with Mayweather. But Top Rank has to take some blame in the mega fight not getting made. These were the request.

Pac: He got the glove size, the ring size, the weight, the venue, the ten million dollar for every pound over weight penalty, and a 50/50 split was agreed upon. This was shocking because May said he would never agree to such a split. Mayweather’s request: A random blood test. That’s six to one for Pac. Very true; neither request by either fighter has ever been requested in their previous fights. But people argue Pac’s 10 mill request was legit because Mayweather had come in two pounds overweight in his fight with Juan Manuel Marquez. But they have a commission to take care of those penalties when a fighter comes in overweight. Keith Kizer of the NSYC over saw that whole process. He made sure May forked over $650,000 big ones for those two pounds (for it was 300,000 per pound that were to be paid by either fighter if they came in over weight).

There have been other fights where the commission has deducted monies from fighters for coming in over weight. Here are a few. Sergio Mora vs. Shane Mosley; Mora coughed up $57,000 of his $285,000 purse for coming in 3 pounds over weight (George Dodd, executive officer of the California Athelitic Commission handled that case). Carlos Baldomir vs Saul Alvarez; Baldimer came in at 153 pounds instead the contracted 151 pounds. He was penalized 20% of $60,000; Saul Alvarez vs. Matthew Hatton. Saul came in 1.8 pounds overweight. He paid 35k to the CALC and another 10% went to Hatton.

One thing I can tell you out of those examples that a commission has never taken 10 million dollars from any fighter for coming in overweight. So Pac’s request was of a PERSONAL request. Now as far as fighters that caught using steroids, the list is as follows: James Toney, Roy Jones Orlando Salido; Fernando Vargas; Cruz Carbajal, Omar Nino (caught). And with so many stars in other sports being exposed, Mayweather’s request is not far fetched. But his request too was PERSONAL, but both are legitimate.

FT: Fact is that Money said yes to all Manny’s six requests and Manny said no to Mayweather’s one. And it was Bob Arum who said the fight was off in the first set of negotiations; Not team Mayweather. And as far as Arum talking about May’s negotiations process, wasn’t it Top Rank that double booked Texas Stadium and the MGM Grand last year without announcing an opponent a week after the May/Mosley bout? And wasn’t Top Rank that worked on a deal with Marquez while Pac trained for Mosley? Top Rank that closed a deal with Marquez seven days before Pac even got in the ring with Mosley. These are the facts.

^Ouch, but we're just Mayweather groupies.... Mayweather agreed to all of Pac's requests but Pacquiao couldn't agree to Mayweather's 1?

And so the commission fines fighters that come in overweight, yet Pacquiao wanted a 10 million dollar per pound weight penalty (which Floyd agreed).

But when it came time for Pacquiao to agree to the random drug test, he wanted to go by what the commission wanted.

Why couldn't Floyd go by what the commission wanted in terms of weight penalties?

Double standards anyone?

Fast forward to today....

Floyd is fighting on May 5, Arum says Pacquiao may fight in April.

We see who doesn't want the fight...

Again all this "agreeing" and calling out means nothing until they negotiate after Nov 12th.

Remember though, floyd at first wanted the fight at 154 then said ok 147 is good. He had came in two pounds over weight against marquez and only had to pay $600k, so team pac made some really stiff penalties so he wouldn't cheat the scales again. that was actually a smart move on team pac's part, imo. I mean if floyd (or whoever else) wants to have a weight advantage and there is only a small penalty ($600k aint shit when you're going to make $50million+) if you're in position too you should make sure that doesn't happen.

Floyd agreed so I don't get your point....

Pacquiao wanted to follow the commissions rules in regards to drug testing but didn't want to follow the commissions rules in regards to weight penalties?

20% of $50 million is how much?

The commission never has a set % of the purse that says "x amount of money will be paid for x amount of pounds you are over weight" it's actually something that has to be set in the contract and/or is something that is set by the sanctioning body such as the WBC or whomever. The State of Nevada doesn't collect that money, they can enforce the rules but they don't set the %

Either way it goes, Floyd would have been penalized for being overweight... so why couldn't they just go by what the commission says? But then they wanted to go by what the commission said when it came to the drug test?

We see who is ducking who now....

because if it's not stated in the contract what those penalties are, you'll probalby end up with a marquez scenario where he only has to pay $650k. You can see by that writers own examples it's all over the place. One guy pays 20% of his purse. Another guy (floyd) pays like 1% of his purse. That's why you have to have those things in fine print. I'm sure if Marquez knew floyd would be overweight he would have made sure there were stiffer penalties too.

Regardless, this is basically irrelevant (at this point). We just got to see what happens after the fight and hope for the best.

Arum: Pacquiao-Martinez Possible, Same Day Weigh-In

By Rick Reeno

A dream fight between Manny Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38KOs) and Sergio Martinez (48-2-2, 27KOs) is possible - if Martinez agrees to a same-day weigh-in, according to Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, who promotes the Filipino superstar. Martinez, the WBC's Diamond champion at middleweight, is willing to drop down to a catch-weight of 150-pounds to face Pacquiao, the WBO's champion at 147-pounds.

Arum's concern with Martinez making 150, with 24 hours to rehydrate, is the possibility of the Argentine boxer coming to the ring at 175-pounds on the night of the fight. To prevent that, Arum would like to have both boxers make weight on a Saturday afternoon, a few hours before the fight.

"Here is the problem with Martinez. Let me tell you the problem with Martinez. Martinez says 'I'll fight him at 150,' but that's bullsh**. That means he'll dehydrate until the afternoon of the weigh-in and come to the ring at 175, which he's done before. What I say is, if you really want to fight Manny Pacquiao - I have a simple way to do it. You said 150, you will fight at 150, then let's go to a commission, and not necessarily this [Las Vegas] commission....maybe New York, maybe Texas, wherever. And say 'both fighters want to do the fight and they want to go back to the old days and we'll weigh in on the day of the fight, at 150. If he wants to do that, we can start talking," Arum said.

After last year's fight with Antonio Margarito, at 150, Arum says Pacquiao and his team made a decision to avoid taking fights above the welterweight limit. Pacquiao, who tried to bulk up for Margarito, started dropping weight a few days before the fight because the added bulk was making him sluggish in the gym. Pacquiao weighed in at 144-pounds. During the fight, Margarito's size became a factor when he trapped Pacquiao against the ropes and hurt him badly to the body.

"He was hurting for a month after that fight. We realized that he can't continue to fight all of these bigger guys," Arum said.

So Arum and Top Rank are making up there own rules what about the commission. LoL, can you say double standards.
