Carl Froch Aims To “Do Some Serious Damage” In Andre Ward Super-Six Final

By James Slater: Though he is both proud and satisfied at the way he has given his paying fans a number of great action fights recently - against the likes of Arthur Abraham and, last time out, Glen Johnson - WBC super-middleweight king Carl Froch, 28-1(20) says he definitely wants to score more KO’s in the future: starting with his important fight with the unbeaten Andre Ward.

“The Cobra” will meet the WBA champ on October 29th, in what will be the grand finale of the exciting, two-years-to-complete “Super Six” Boxing Classic; and Froch says he is looking forward to putting some serious pressure on the jaw of the man who calls himself “S.O.G.”

As fans know, 27-year-old Ward, 24-0(13) has boxed his way to victory over good fighters Mikkel Kessler, Allan Green and, in his last fight, Abraham. However, Ward has yet to have his chin as severely tested as Froch is hoping to test it. Could the Oct. 29th fight be one that sees Ward hit and hurt for the first significant time?

Froch is training hard for the big bout, and he is almost on weight for the clash already - as he explained to Sky Sports News.

“I’m coming into the gym now at 175-pounds,” he said. “So I’m in a really good position. The perfect fight for me is to outbox my opponent and catch up with him late on in the fight, really put the pressure on and get the stoppage to excite the fans. I’ve been a bit disappointed in my last fights - because I’ve not got the stoppage. Against Ward, I’m going to connect with a hurtful shot on the jaw section of the cranium and do so serious damage.”

Froch has not stopped a foe since his sensational come-from-behind 12th-round TKO of Jermain Taylor in April of 2009. While Ward, not a big puncher, has not scored a KO since his 3rd-round stoppage of the overmatched Shelby Pudwill, also in 2009. I do feel the October battle has a great chance of going the distance; despite what Froch says about landing some hurt.

In a chess-match type affair, Ward has an excellent shot at retaining his perfect record and of lifting the Boxing Classic trophy. The thing is, can 34-year-old Froch turn the fight into a physical, rough fight? If he can, the trophy has a fine chance of coming home to Nottingham, U.K.

Looked at as a pick ‘em fight by many good judges, Ward-Froch promises to be an intense battle of wits. I think we will see great boxing skills from Ward, as well as effective aggression by Froch. A stoppage either way would be a surprise. It will be a case of who picks up the most points by impressing the judges. I have a sneaking feeling this will be the younger, arguably faster Ward.

But Froch has proven in the past how adept he is at winning when fans do not expect him to.

Mayweather Sparring with Ouma, Powell and Latimore to get ready for Ortiz

By Robert Jackson: Reports have surfaced that Floyd Mayweather in preparation for his September 17, 2011 fight with Vicious Victor Ortiz has recruited contenders and journeymen – all southpaws, Kassim ‘The Dream’ Ouma, Sechew ‘Iron Horse’ Powell and St. Louis fighter Deandre Latimore as sparring partners to prepare him for fight nite. Those same reports say that Floyd has been impressive while sparring, Floyd himself has said “I think I can do better”.

What is also known is that Mayweather opened training camp immediately after the 2-city tour announcing his return to the ring in September. If this is the case Mayweather is looking at a 10 week training camp, most likely precipitated by many months of inactivity, not having fought since May 2010.

So what does sparring with the likes of Powell, Ouma and Latimore do for the man arguably considered one of the best defensive fighters of his era?? Always in impeccable shape and considered a gym rat by all, Mayweather needs rounds to reactivate his timing and build up his toughness, while also re-acclimating himself to the southpaw stance, which in the past has given Mayweather trouble.

Powell of Brooklyn NY, brings size and a well rounded boxing acumen to the ring and can help Mayweather because it’s his style to stay busy while trying to set up his shots, he’ll force Mayweather to adapt and think quickly on his feet. Ouma a native of Uganda now living in Florida, fights with a high activity rate throwing punches in bunches which will help Mayweather tune his already impressive defensive prowess. Latimore who’s style I think most resembles that of Victor Ortiz, meshes the styles of Powell and Ouma, Latimore likes the give and take style of fighting that Ortiz employs, he also applies constant pressure which will make Floyd Mayweather have to fight for every minute of every round.

Mayweather has also stated that 4 or 5 other guys will be in his camp to help him get ready for his September date, is James Kirkland one of them?? Kirkland recently released from incarceration is on the mend from his first loss and is trying to recover to his pre-jail form. If Kirkland is on the schedule his heavy handed – pressure style will give Mayweather problems but get him ready for war. Mayweather will definitely have to fight every minute of every round to keep the ‘take no prisoners’ styled Kirkland at bay. Just imagine what those sparring sessions would be like because as we all know sparring in the Mayweather camp is as top secret as Nevada’s Area 51 is.

While Victor Ortiz is performing in Triathlon’s, Floyd Mayweather is in the gym sparring with a who’s who of fighters who collectively have a 75-14-1 record in the ring. So I believe Floyd means it when he said during HBO’s Faceoff with Max Kellerman in Ortiz’ presence “I’m gonna destroy this kid”! And as any trainer worth his salt will tell “you have to fight to get ready to fight”.

Maidana-Guerrero: Marcos can make himself the #1 fighter in the light welterweight

Maidana-Guerrero: Marcos can make himself the #1 fighter in the light welterweight division with a win over Guerrero
August 9th, 2011

By Scott Gilfoid: Forget about Amir Khan, Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s) is poised to become the real No.1 star in the light welterweight division if he can get Robert Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KO’s) for the World Boxing Association regular light welterweight title on August 27th at the HP Pavilion, in San Jose, California.

Maidana doesn’t need to tell boxing fans he’s the number #1 fighter over and over again and yak about how he deserves to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr; Maidana is quietly proving to be a fan favorite by putting on exciting fights and not ducking the quality guys to face weak punchers to protect himself. This is what’s so great about Maidana. He’s not a manufactured guy that’s shoved down our throats by the network television in bouts against guys that can’t punch their way through a wet paper bag.

Maidana is the real thing, and a win over Guerrero will make him in my view the number #1 fighter in the light welterweight division. Sorry, Khan, you can brag about being the number #1 guy off of empty wins over old guys like Zab Judah, and guys with zero power like Paul McCloskey and Paulie Malignaggi, but Maidana is the genuine article.

The Maidana-Guerrero fight will bring in huge numbers for HBO, much bigger than the numbers that Khan has been bringing in. The reason for that is because Maidana is an exciting fighter who does just run around the ring all night long like a chicken with it’s head cut off looking to hold and hit, and toss low blows. He’s for real. However, he’s got to get by Guerrero to claim his throne and rip away from the pretenders like Khan.

Bradley is the best 140lber until he gets beat. Khan is calling out Mayweather's name because he wants a big payday and Roach won't let him and Manny fight eachother. Plus Golden Boy will make good money and bring in more UK fans with that fight. If Khan keeps on winning then he will get his fight with Mayweather and a ass whipping that will go along with it.

floyd betting that he would lose? you're not alloyed to do that, you can't legally bet on yourself losing lol.

he would never do that anyway. Ortiz doesn't have the style to beat floyd. Khan would probably stylistically give him more problems them ortiz will imo, he'd still lose just sayin.

Khan doesn't have the power to keep Mayweather off of him, nor the chin to stand up to all the counter shots he's going to catch. Khan will have to take more PED to compete. Khan will have a hard time beating Bradley, Guerrero, or L. Peterson at 140Lb.

keep floyd off him? didn't realize floyd was a come forward type fighter.

Khan is tall and has a great jab plus handspeed and uses his range well. It would be enough to keep things competitive at least for a while. He lunges sometimes which obviously he wouldn't want to do often against floyd. Ortiz does the same thing but even worse especially since he doesn't have a jab. Floyd beats 'em both, just sayin, stylistically, Khan should give a little more problems to floyd than Ortiz given those factors.

Bradley & Guerrero are good fighters, I'm sure fights with Khan would be great. Peterson not so much.

Major fights like that are circled (capped). Floyd losing would probably cost him about 250 million with what he has left in him.

Ortiz being a 5 to 1 dog. Floyd would have to place a 50 million dollar cash bet. The casino wouldn't take that. It would be interrogated right away and the lines would probably shift to a pick em.

Khan has a much better chance at beating Floyd and the odd makers would show it.

Ortiz can land that one punch? Ya, so can I. All of us can. Way to analyze the fight.

Maidana: Khan begged the WBA not to fight me again for 18 months

By William Mackay: It seems that WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KO’s) hasn’t exactly been eager to get back in the ring with Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s) after taking a savage beating from Maidana in close win over him last December. Khan was out on his feet in the last three rounds and took one-way traffic while having Maidana peeled off of him again and again by referee Joe Cortez while Khan was taking a lot of shots.

Khan says that Khan didn’t want a rematch with him when he attempted to get back in the ring for some reason. Normally fighters that have just gone through a fight of the year bout with another guy, like Khan did with Maidana, are eager to get back in the ring with that fighter in order to take advantage of the fan appeal that their first fight got. But not Khan. For some reason, he wants no part of fighting Maidana again.

Here’s what Maidana had to say about Khan on his twitter account:

“What Khan doesn’t say is that he begged the WBA in writing that they won’t put me in front of him again, like we should have. Very funny that Amir Khan says that he offered to fight a number of fighters and they said no. Khan asks now Bradley to Fed-Ex his belt. Then, Khan should Fed-Ex his to me. Hehe. We asked [Khan] for a rematch and they asked the WBA for an 18 month extension.”

That’s sad if it’s true. Khan going out of his way to get the WBA to let him bypass a risky rematch with Maidana in order to face weaker punching guys like Paul McCloskey and Zab Judah. That almost seems like a cherry picking move.

Dawson: Hopkins’ run as boxing’s oldest champion is over

By Dan Ambrose: 29-year-old two-time light heavyweight world champion Chad Dawson (30-1, 17 KO’s) intends on knocking 46-year-old World Boxing Council (WBC) light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KO’s) off his perch on October 15th at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California. Hopkins captured the WBC title recently with a win over pot shot article Jean Pascal in a 12 round decision last May.

Now Hopkins is facing what many boxing fans feel is the best fighter in the light heavyweight division and it’s going to be a big test for Hopkins to solve the Dawson riddle. Only fighter has thus far and that was Pascal under questionable means after their fight was halted in the 11th round from a head butt. The timing of the quick stoppage couldn’t have been more perfect, as Pascal was badly hurt from a flurry of shots from Dawson and it was doubtful that Pascal would have made it out of the round if not for the cut stoppage.

Dawson said this at the Monday press conference with Hopkins: “Bernard has had a great career, but his believe it or not text only run as boxing’s oldest champion is now over. I am the true light heavyweight champion of the world and on October 15, I will put the world back where it should be and reclaim by belt.”

I believe Dawson will make Hopkins look all of 46 and then some with his fast hands and amazing boxing skills. Hopkins is going to want to turn this fight into a hit and grab wrestling match, but Dawson isn’t going to go along with that. He’s a much better fighter in terms of technical skills than the guys that Hopkins has been feasting on lately in wins over Enrique Ornelas, Pascal, Kelly Pavlik and a completely shot Roy Jones Jr. If you really dig under the hood of Hopkins’ wins in the past three years, he hasn’t beaten anyone that is really anywhere near the same class as Dawson and he’s going to get put in his place on October 15th by the younger Dawson.

Not when you realize the #1 guy at the time Timothy Bradley was the person Khan was supposed to fight but ended up declining.

I don't think Berto is over rated. I said from the beginning that he had an off night. I wouldn't give the "not to take away from Ortiz" speech. Berto looked way off and I think he beats Ortiz in a rematch. Not a Berto fan at all, just saying he didn't look like himself in there.

Regardless, I hope Ortiz knocks Floyd out. I just don't see it happening. I'll be watching for it though.

He already beat Maidana. A rematch for what? It wasn't controversial. All that happened was Maidana landed a big punch and had him wobbled. So is that all it takes to deserve a rematch these days? Wobble someone? "Hey but I hit you pretty hard in that one round".

I agree about fighting someone other than Zab. Whatever. Another name on the resume...
Khan has plenty left in the system.
