Gennady Golovkin promoter impressed with Gilberto Ramirez as 'Canelo' Alvarez alternative

Gennady Golovkin’s promoter has learned well that finding an opponent for a middleweight champion who’s knocked out 21 consecutive opponents is not an easy task.
So Tom Loeffler was in Las Vegas on Saturday night to watch Gilberto Ramirez fight veteran Arthur Abraham of Germany. Ramirez (34-0) impressed, became the first fighter from Mexico to win a super-middleweight world title — sweeping every round and capturing, by unanimous decision, the World Boxing Organization belt.
“My job for Gennady is to make sure we have as many options as possible,” Loeffler told The Times on Monday. “Clearly, to watch the Ramirez fight, thought he looked good. If you can dominate an established veteran who’s had a great career … the only question with Ramirez was his lack of experience on the world-championship level, but dominating an established champion — literally pitching a shutout — he has established himself as one of the best new champions in the sport.”
Golovkin (34-0, 31 knockouts) first needs to successfully defend his World Boxing Assn. and International Boxing Federation belts April 23 at the Forum against unbeaten underdog Dominic Wade, and the Kazakhstan fighter has a World Boxing Council mandate in place to fight the winner of the May 7 Saul “Canelo” Alvarez-Amir Khan title fight.

“Yes, I understand that,” Golovkin told The Times. “I understand this decision is maybe 20% Canelo’s and 80% [his promoter], Golden Boy. It’s business, but it’s not respectful of boxing. Everyone says Canelo is a great champion, the idol of Mexico. The idol for what? For boxing? No. Or as a businessman? Right now, he looks like a businessman.”
“Fighting Amir Khan, then maybe [welterweight Manny] Pacquiao … hey, listen, Canelo, I have double the championship belts [at middleweight],” Golovkin said. “Make the fight with me. It’s a good fight for us. Not an easy fight. Everyone understands that. But then next … you can bring on Manny or Floyd [Mayweather]. For me, it’s about who’s the best? Who’s No. 1 in the division? That’s what’s No. 1 to me.
“Second is money.”
“Canelo says he’s the middleweight champion. Middleweight is my best weight,” Golovkin said. “Everybody says Canelo’s this great champion. I saw his last fight. Cotto’s not a real middleweight. Great champion, not a middleweight.”
“I’m a middleweight. So let’s settle who’s the best middleweight. Canelo? He’s a big idol … is he really a junior-middleweight? Come on, guys. Let’s fight. You don’t want the fight, I understand, you’re 100% a businessman. So go fight Manny Pacquiao. But I wait, I’ve been waiting … let’s go fight.”

Bellew-Makabu World Title Clash Confirmed, 5/29 At Goodison Park

Tony Bellew will get the chance to fight for the world title at Goodison Park.
The Liverpool cruiserweight (26-2-1, 16 KOs) has a fight with Ilunga Makabu for the vacant WBC cruiserweight crown locked in for the summer.
Bellew, the 33-year-old former European ruler, is now expected to face the South Africa-based knockout artist (19-1, 18 KOs) at the home of his beloved Everton Football Club on May 29, exclusively live on Sky Sports.

He confirmed the news in an exclusive interview with Liverpool’s Radio City Talk, saying that tickets will go on sale next week, further details regarding which are yet to be revealed.
“I haven’t slept all night because now it’s done,” he told presenter Steve Hothersall.
“I am fighting at Goodison Park on May 29, under the lights on a Bank Holiday Sunday, which has never been done before. Myself and Eddie Hearn and the chairman [of Everton Football Club, Bill Kenwright] have just got this together.”
Last week, BoxingScene revealed that the licence to use the stadium, which was applied for for that date by Eddie Hearn, the managing director of Matchroom Sport, had been approved by Liverpool City Council.
“It was on the verge of falling through and we sat down in a room and looked at the possible dates and I said to them: ‘Listen, I know this is a gamble but trust me: Bank Holiday Sunday. Liverpool comes alive on a Bank Holiday, let’s go with it.’
“We’ve got over a lot of hurdles in a short space of time to get these things done and this is not just about me."
Although Bellew says there is still one more minute hurdle to overcome with the local authorities, he insists that “the Council are behind us massively.”
“Most things have been given and approved,” he said. “There’s just one minute thing left to do but I can’t see that being an issue whatsoever.”
The supporting cast for the bill, Bellew says, is “Scouse boxing versus the world.”
“When you see the bill that we’ve got prepared, virtually complete, it’s not about Tony Bellew, thats the first thing I’ll say, it’s an event for Scousers.”
Further details surrounding the undercard of the show and ticket information are set to be revealed in due course.
