The eight-times world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao has provoked a storm of controversy in his home country after saying people in same-sex relationships “are worse than animals”.

Pacquiao, 37, who is running for a seat in the Philippines senate in May’s elections as a conservative Christian, made the remark in a video posted on local TV5’s election site.

“It’s common sense,” he said. “Do you see animals mating with the same sex? Animals are better because they can distinguish male from female. If men mate with men and women mate with women they are worse than animals.”

The country’s most popular gay comedian, Vice Ganda, posted #PrayForMannyPacquiao to his 6.7m followers on Twitter as he hit back at the boxer, adding: “Some people think they can judge people like God just because they’ve attended a prayer meeting and read the bible. The senate needs experts on politics and law, not blind prophets.”

The LGBT is a group of people. We are humans. But not animals. Though we're no saints we will pray for Manny Pacquiao.

The singer Aiza Seguerra, who recently married her actress-girlfriend, called on voters to boycott Pacquiao, who is also preparing for his last fight in April, calling him an “ignorant, bigoted hypocrite”. Seguerra added: “You might have done our country proud but with your statement, you just showed the whole country why we shouldn’t vote for you.”

Pacquiao, beaten by Floyd Mayweather in May last year, currently represents the province of Sarangani in the House of Representatives, though is often absent. In one of his few speeches, Pacquiao quoted heavily from the bible as he attempted to stop a proposed law, since passed, giving free condoms to the poor.

Responding to the controversy via Instagram, Pacquiao initially posted an image of himself with his wife, quoting the bible and writing: “I rather obey the Lord’s command than obeying the desire of the flesh. I’m not condemning anyone, but I’m just telling the truth of what the bible says.”

Later, though, he added an apology, saying: “I’m sorry for hurting people by comparing homosexuals to animals. Please forgive me for those I’ve hurt. I still stand on my belief that I’m against same sex marriage because of what the Bible says, but I’m not condemning LGBT. I love you all with the love of the Lord. God Bless you all and I’m praying for you.”

In January fighter Tyson Fury was reminded of his “heavy responsibilities” by the British Boxing Board of Control for his controversial remarks about homosexuality.

That's a good fight. Not sure why they're needing a network to finalize considering both guys are in with HBO pretty good.

I remember like last month TR did come out saying they weren't doing fights on truTV anymore and looking for another network. HBO would advertise those fights too so who knows if TR is really looking for whats best for their fighters. GBP came in and took over HBO like crazy, and TR couldn't lock Cotto in for a fight between him and Canelo for maybe a Mexican Holiday. I did find it weird that the last truTV card was very HBO fan friendly. TR might be pissed off that HBO seems to start working with Haymon after TR showed loyalty to HBO these past few years. This might actually be true

Teddys solution is to fight two guys he can't fight lol. Mayweather is obviously retired and even if he wasn't he's a true welterweight. Andre Ward is at 175 pounds, rejected Golovkins offer to fight a couple years back, semi retired for a couple years after that, briefly asked Golovkin to sign to fight him hours after Golovkin signed to fight Lemieux then left 168 pounds for good.

It sucks Golovkin hasn't got a big name yet, Sergio Martinez wouldn't fight him, Cotto, Canelo, Froch, Chavez et al. But like Bernard Hopkins who struggled for years to get a big name his patience will hopefully pay off. Remember, Hopkins didn't get his big fight until he was 36 years old against Trinidad. Golovkin is hoping Canelo will be his Trinidad.

He couldn't have fought Ward. When Ward approached Golovkin after he signed to fight Lemieux, Ward was asking to sign to fight late 2016. He wanted to sign a fight for a year later. So even if Golovkin agreed to do that at 168 pounds, the fight still would not have happened. Sounded like a bunch of bullshit from Ward who was planning on going to 175 as it was.

Regarding Golovkin saying he wanted to MEET IN THE MIDDLE with Ward, remember, Golovkin doesn't have a belt at 168 pounds that Ward is mandatory to and Golovkin doesn't fight at an imaginary weight class of 161 pounds. That's the only way it would be comparable to Canelo. Also consider at the time, he was anticipating a fight with Canelo by now, so it wouldn't make sense to move up to 168 pounds then immediately drop back down to 160 (or possibly below) for a Canelo fight. Makes no sense. But again regardless, Ward wasn't even trying to fight then and wanted a one year away contract lol. Fuck that.

Gennady Golovkin’s opponent failed to show for Tuesday’s news conference at L.A. Live's Conga Room.

Many don’t expect much of a difference between that and April 23, when heavy underdog Dominic Wade is responsible for appearing at the Forum to fight Golovkin, who’s seeking to extend his 21-fight knockout streak.

Golovkin (34-0, 31 knockouts) was forced to take the consolation date against his mandatory International Boxing Federation middleweight foe Wade (18-0, 12 KOs) after Mexico’s new World Boxing Council middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez balked at a title unification bout.

Alvarez opted instead to take an HBO pay-per-view date May 7 against former 140-pound champion Amir Khan of England.

Before his news conference began Tuesday, Golovkin was asked what he thought, as a boxer and as a man, about Alvarez’s reluctance to pursue an immediate meeting.

“That’s a good question. This is a business, [sometimes] a terrible business,” Golovkin said. “I’m a boxer. Of course, I’m ready.”

He said Alvarez-Khan “is not good for boxing. Amir Khan, he’s not bad … [Canelo] will knock the hell out of him. This is true. … There’s a big difference in size. … I need a chance. Give me the chance.”

There have been rumblings that Alvarez’s promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, would like to stall an Alvarez-Golovkin date until 2017, but Golovkin promoter Tom Loeffler said there’s a signed agreement in place that the Alvarez-Khan winner has to agree to negotiate with Golovkin within 15 days after their bout at Las Vegas’ new T-Mobile Arena, or the WBC belt goes to Golovkin.

“We’ve always said Canelo is a very proud champion who’s taken very risky fights before for much less money than he’d get for Gennady,” Loeffler said. “Right now, it’s the biggest fight in the sport.”

Alvarez balked after less than 150,000 viewers bought Golovkin’s title-unification pay-per-view victory over Canada’s David Lemieux in October at Madison Square Garden.

There’s obvious thinking from the Alvarez camp that Kazakhstan’s Golovkin still has audience building to do. Alvarez’s November victory over former champion Miguel Cotto drew 900,000 buys.

Still, Golovkin’s trainer, Abel Sanchez, said Alvarez’s reluctance is a convincing mind-game victory for Golovkin.

“Gennady’s saying, ‘I’m here.’ … For Canelo to back out … if he completely says he doesn’t want to fight Gennady [in May], that’s good enough for Gennady,” Sanchez said.

As for Golovkin’s April 23 foe Wade, who was unable to travel from Washington, D.C., because of weather, Sanchez said a title shot is powerful motivation that must be considered by Golovkin as he enters training camp next week in Big Bear.

Golovkin “has to be perfect now,” Sanchez admitted. “[Wade] understands this is his opportunity.

“Every coach trains for a 12-round fight. [Golovkin] will be prepared for 12 rounds. If it’s less, then it’s less. Whether it’s Dominic Wade or a knockout, the important part [for Golovkin] is to look good doing it.”

Golovkin said he never heard of Wade before he emerged as the opponent. He won’t see him in person until Thursday’s news conference in New York.

Tickets for Golovkin-Wade went on sale Tuesday. Loeffler said more than 6,000 seats were already sold, with the Forum’s capacity at just more than 16,000.

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) - Four American boxers traveled nearly 4000 miles to Casablanca, Morocco for the USA Knockouts’ first away match of the 2016 World Series of Boxing season. The USA Knockouts will face the Morocco Atlas Lions on Friday at the Salle Omnisport Complexe in Casablanca, Morocco.

Three USA Knockouts will return for their second match of the season following the 2016 opener against Miami in mid-January. American bantamweight Shakur Stevenson (Newark, N.J.) received WSB Boxer of the Week honors for his performance in week one and he will compete in his second WSB match against the Morocco Atlas Lions’ Mohamed Hamout on Friday. Middleweight Charles Conwell (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) was victorious in his WSB debut as well and he’s back in action against Morocco’s Badr-Eddine Haddioui. In the light welterweight division, Gary Russell (Capitol Heights, Md.) will look to bounce back from an opening bout loss in his match-up with the home team’s Abedlhaq Nadir.

Heavyweight Brandon Glanton (Ellenwood, Ga.) will compete in his first WSB match on Friday and he will face Abdeljalil Abdouhamda of Morocco in the final bout of the night. Colombia’s Hernan Alarcon will represent the USA Knockouts in the opening bout of the night against the Atlas Lions’ Imad Ahayoun in the light flyweight division.

The American team departed for Casablanca on Saturday and after traveling for approximately 24 hours arrived in Casablanca to acclimate to their new surroundings. Coaches Kay Koroma (Burke, Va.) and Augie Sanchez (Las Vegas, Nev.) joined the U.S. squad and they are leading the team’s final preparations before Friday’s matches. Team USA has enjoyed their new surroundings and they held a training session at a nearby beach as well as visiting a local gym to workout with area boxers on Tuesday and Wednesday. Friday’s bouts will begin at 10 p.m. local time/5 p.m. ET at the Omnisport Complexe.

Following Friday’s bouts, Stevenson, Russell, Conwell, Sanchez and Koroma will travel to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs to prepare for the international Olympic qualifying event March 11-19 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Nevermind bro. What I', trying to say that when GGG vs Canelo comes into conversation, GGG's camp and fans say, "Unfortunately, this is a business." I hope this isn't a situation where Haymon is rushing Spence Jr the way he did with Broner. Because I think after the experiences and last performance by Algieri, I favor Algieri. Good fight tho

Algieri's last performance against Bone wasn't anything to go crazy over. Spence has been wiping his ass with guys like Bone. I'd likely pick van Heerden who Spence recently annihilated to beat Bone. There comes a time where you need to find out if you have a great fighter or a very good fighter. You can't keep throwing Spence in there with guys he slaughters.

If Spence loses this fight it's on Spence, not anyone else. This is a natural progression fight for a guy everyone is touting to be a star. Broner wasn't rushed to anything, he wanted to be Henry Armstrong and storm through divisions. You're also using some serious hindsight in saying he was rushed to fight Maidana. Maidana at that point in time had dropped fights to most solid boxers he fought and he was a big time underdog going into that fight having recently been clowned on by Devon Alexander.

Broner lost because Maidana was better than him and Broner just wasn't who we thought he was. The guy was unbeaten and had just won his 3rd divisional title going into that fight, no way possible he was rushed.

You're right about Algieri, I was referring to the Khan fight. But as far as Broner being rushed, IMO, he was rushed not just because of mving up divisions, but his age as well. When he fought Maidana, he was like 23 at the time and he was barely adjusting to 147. Maidana wasn't just a threat, he was experienced as well. Spence is a lil older I believe, but his experience isn't as much as Algieri. For me, that would be the difference maker. That's why I'm picking Algieri

Mets to host Pride Night this season

The Mets will host the team’s first ever Pride Night at Citi Field this season, and will be the first of New York’s major sports teams to have a night dedicated to the LGBT community.

The Mets in the past have hosted events from Fiesta Latina night to Jewish Heritage Day. Other major league teams have hosted LGBT nights.

The Mets will unveil details (including the date) at a press conference Tuesday, with Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, Rep. Steve Israel and LGBT Network CEO David Kilmnick.

“I’m proud to be making this announcement — one, as a lifelong Met fan, and two, we get to beat the Yankees on this,” Kilmnick joked to us.

He added that the team’s “making sure that everyone is welcomed and celebrated at Citi Field.”

Over 5,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender fans are expected at Pride Night, he said, and a portion of all ticket sales will go the LGBT Network’s anti-bullying programs.

Age in boxing is irrelevant it's about what kind of fights you had. Canelo is ONLY 25 but he's a 10 year veteran, for example.

Broner was a favorite to beat Maidana. Maidana hadn't looked good in previous fights against good opponents. Hell, I incorrectly thought it was a bit of a cherry pick fight myself and that was a popular view in the boxing community and media at the time. What we found is that Broner just isn't that good and dominated the lower weight class opponents because he was so massively bigger than everyone.

Algeiri is a safe fight. He has no power, he's a decent boxer that's it so it's not that risky for Spence and it's a good way to see where he's at.

Algeiri also isn't all that experienced. Remember, he was a kickboxer and later transitioned to boxing. Spence probably has more experience as a boxer.

“Everything is mandated. The winner of Canelo v Khan has 15 days to commit to fighting Gennady or not. If they commit then we’ll start negotiating to put that fight together,” Loeffler said. “It’s so hard to get an opponent in the ring with Gennady. If I stopped working with certain people, it’d be even less.”

Age in boxing is irrelevant it's about what kind of fights you had. Canelo is ONLY 25 but he's a 10 year veteran, for example.

Broner was a favorite to beat Maidana. Maidana hadn't looked good in previous fights against good opponents. Hell, I incorrectly thought it was a bit of a cherry pick fight myself and that was a popular view in the boxing community and media at the time. What we found is that Broner just isn't that good and dominated the lower weight class opponents because he was so massively bigger than everyone.

Algeiri is a safe fight. He has no power, he's a decent boxer that's it so it's not that risky for Spence and it's a good way to see where he's at.

Algeiri also isn't all that experienced. Remember, he was a kickboxer and later transitioned to boxing. Spence probably has more experience as a boxer.

I see your point, but I think the combination of both PLUS timing can make it dangerous. Canelo was what, 23 when he fought Floyd? At a catchweight and very young. Maidana wasn't all that and Broner was the favorite, but Maidana peaked after finding motivation by training with Robert Garcia. His experience along with that allowed Maidana to just dominate. That allowed Maidana to perform well vs Floyd in the first fight as well. He was experienced enough and was in his comfort zone. I really like Earl and I don't want him to lose vs Algieri, the same way I didn't like Broner moving up so quick to make him a ppv star when he wasn't ready.
