SAN FRANCISCO -- A suitcase containing human body parts was found floating in the San Francisco Bay on Friday afternoon, police said. Several people who were sailing a rented boat on the bay called the U.S. Coast Guard around 1:10 p.m., shortly after finding the suitcase just east of the Golden Gate Bridge, opening it and seeing the contents inside. The Coast Guard referred the call to San Francisco police because the bay is under the department's jurisdiction. After opening the suitcase, the boaters said they closed it, put it back in the water and towed it behind their boat until authorities arrived, said police spokesman Sgt. Neville Gittens. Gittens confirmed that the remains were human, but would not say exactly what body parts were found or in what condition. The medical examiner's office will conduct DNA tests to identify the remains, he said. Authorities had no leads or suspects in the case as of late Friday.
