I was reading another post where someone had said that the 808 bass is the only one Lil Jon uses.

Whether or not that is true, why would anyone want to use just one bass kick all the time?

I've owned several 808's in my day and the 808 kick is nice, but the sub on the Phantom has perfect resonance. Reason offers hundreds of kicks. Akai has stepped up their entire sound bank... The options today are endless, but what yeilds the best result?

My question is, what do you think offers the best bass and sub kicks? And what producers/artists do you think have mastered bass in their beats?

i think the shit that sounds the best, not necessarily what knocks the absolute hardest, but overall best sound of bass, is the shit droop-e got goin in that DB'z song Stewy. The one that comes in at 58 seconds

i dont like 90percent of the mixing jobs in regards of bay area music.

lil jon uses the actual roland tr-808 hardware, and his is modified with audio L's/R's and midi ins and outs so it gives a 100% better ound then "ANY!!!!!" sampled 808 plus he has some really really good engineers unlike the bay

well i also produce plus i read scratch magazine..but most...well i shouldnt even say that, but umm, there are a few producers out there that likes the authentic sound of the original tr-808. the original doesnt come with alot of ins and outs or midi inputs/outputs.but u can have it custom built-in for more money, that way when u connect the audio ins/outs into your audio interface such as sumthin like pro-tools digi 001 or 002, you can then record live into your PT session, raw audio. which is the full 110% sound coming out of the hardware, which generates the best tones and all that other good stuff.....
"tr 808s" are hard to find tho

not to be confused with the roland sp 808

which is still good, but it doesnt hold that true vintage sound that many people have loved to like.....i doubt if traxxamillion uses the old vintage hardware because i dont hear it in his music, and its a truly big difference in comparison of sampled 808 kicks and the original....but it doesnt mean that you cant get great sounds from sampled 808s,just means that you will have to do more layering and maybe a little bit of eq

Alright CMP, you've somewhat redeemed yourself and your knowledge of the 808.

I've been a huge fan of Roland after buying a Juno 106... new. And stuck with them from the 101 to the 909. The 101 sub KNOCKS by the way... A W-30 workstation kicks it in the corner of my lounge.

Back in 1991, a friend of mine spent $1200 to have his 808 modified. We connected the output of his modified 808 and my factory 808 to an o-scope and there was no difference. Upon investigation we found that the 1/4" outputs had been soldered to the main output. The main part of the upgrade was the midi with a "professional" audio out connection.

And I really can't argue against the quality I've been hearing from some Bay Area producers. It's not as good as I expect. Especially on the bass end.
