I have been in the promotions industry for a little over 7 years. I have been in the music business for 5. I dont know everything, but when it comes to doing major events Im not bad. I been behind some major venues in SF and the way I see it was the Bay Area and its successors really didnt get behind this project all too well.

First of all this was an awards show that was showcasing the best of the bay and its up and comers, as well as doing an awards show for the best of each class for 2006.

When tickets sales came into effect and it became a major promotional event where tickets sales to the public came into effect guess what?

The bay Area actually had a forefront to get a permit for a major venue to hold local rap music. Now as commercial to us as it is its still a local rap event. The sad part about it to me is this. When your a majro concert promoter theres things that you are responsible for as a promoter or your name is at stake.

First thing you need more than anything is a permit, and backing that an insurance waiver if the venue doesnt provide one to you. Most venues that are major dont get insurance unless its from another country and even then they'll buy the insurance for a day. Another thing you need when you deal with a rough crowds is diversifing the group up. With every commercial act the bay had in attendence why was there no promotion. Why was there every thug/rapper/streetbacker/and rap slut in attendence? I mean come on, I know people in every too white area in the bay area from pleasanton to danvile to walnut creek to santa rosa to fuckin fremont and sonoma who love e40, love too short love fab and the federation, and they woulda paid out for this show, and none of these people knew about the show, no radio. I mean come on you cant not diversify the group because its too unsafe.

Why would any city let a rap function go off without having made sure that the person who was putting on the event had all the credentials in store to make sure that the promoter was expereinced enough in areas of security and counting heads, as well as proper promotion to get the right kinds of people into the venue. I mean lets not be so politically incorrect, some cities dont want anythign other than white in there venues and that leaves us out. So believe me when i say you really need to have some major backing from city officials to put on functions like this, i know, i got a permit from oakland PD for a side show, and was later turned down due to the coliseaum being owned by two parties, 49% share in oakland, and 51% in Alameda county( alameda county board of governers said no no in case your curious).

I notice the Bay Area is really down on its artists, and though I do not condone there actions, I dont want the mass to go away from the fact that my security during the event, as well as the fans and artists didnt need to be put in jeapardy because of street politics, the promoters who ran that show didnt have the experience or budget needed to put on a function of its caliber. My assumption, and I am sorry if I am wrong to whomever this pertains to, but I am assuming the artists didnt get paid to perform, which means between e40 and everyone else, theres some big dollars saved to get basically 3-5k people in there. So the turn out should have been way better. If I know hella fans that didnt hear about the function, the venue was big enough than what went wrong? There was no money being put into it, yes they had tickets int here outlets, but no there was no radio in there. I should have been hearing live interviews in the morning about hella different rappers up for bars awards months before the show kicked off. As a consumer of music i wouldhave drivin to work listening to the radio hearing some guy named the jacka being nominated for a award in a month and giving a special performance to the bay area. That would have inspired me to pay. The venue was nice, they do import car shows there i know cause i promoted there shows for a few years and even traveled with the company who throws them , vision entertainment.

Every single company that is doing anything for the bay needs to get with booyowski and not let the bay area loose this cause the idea was great, the backing needs improvement and it needs a board of trusted businesspeople who wont let us down, and thats how the bay can put it together . Put golden mean, all bay group, city hall, smc, done deal, frisco street, and any other well known and respected rap company with 4 of the biggest concert promoters in the bay area and do this project and I guarantee every end from

major sponsers, to major venue backing, to proper implemented promotion, proper security, and all in all a total turn out. In a matter of fact if they had free bookings man they woulda left this situation rich, they lacked funds.

A few loud mouth rappers in a controlled area are still harmless, if security can control club deep they coulda easily had covered the bars awards that had only two exits i mean come on step your budget game up people, and stop laying the blame in the wrong hands, it was everyones fault we let the show go down without giving it the proper funds it needed to float let alone be successful. period!

Major concert promoting is no joke and a very costly business. Ive made 50 racks in a day and ive lost even more. You never know until the day of, and you can only hope for ticket sales to give you an idea. You have to spend money to create the want from people to go, i didnt see one clearchannel logo involved no boothes commercial wise.

I've thought about starting a thread about the B.A.R.S. Awards to say what I thought went well and what didn't. Then I came across this thread. I chose this one because it was started by the event organizer. I'm hoping my input will help for what I hope is the B.A.R.S. Awards 3. Here's the good, the bad, the ugly...

The Bad

There STandPoint
Security: The left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing. I saw Rick Rock, the Federation & their entourage (Battle Locco, Big Tic, etc). being sent from the Red Carpet entrance to the general admission area. I know this was because Rick brought hella 707 heads and not all could get the V.I.P. treatment Good Lookin out on Rick's part for not forgetting those who support him on the turf. But honestly, if a major sponsor (18 Dummy) couldn't get the respect they deserve who could.

My Standpoint: 18 dummy is a cool thing for the bay but where was xxl murder dog any type of urban apparel that could have been marketed and possibly sponsered the event to its fullest potential, as for security not knowing what they were doing, did they even map out a security plan from the start i am hearing that half the secuirty left, and really you dont pay secuirty for a show like this in advance, club and any major act says you need 1 security guard for every 10 people, no majpor funds and barricades were put up to stop there were curtains the speakers and equipement could have been set upo better but i have a feeling the venue was so expensive that they didnt really have much time plus they didnt even rent out the whole expo center which means they might not have had the time.

There standpoint
Security2: Security was just as star struck as those in attendance. The general area and backstage was seperated by a curtain and some barracades. Security did a good job of keeping out unwanteds before the show started but once Mess, Guce and the Click Clack gang hit the stage most security was watching the show. That's how everybody and they grandmama got backstage. Including myself!!! (I ain't no dummy...)

My standpoint
As for secuirty being star struck you could tell some people fromt he venue worked there and they werent happy i can tell you that first hand. Really next time we get a show now we probobly will have to pay off duty cops just to be able to get a venue unless we use a big named promoter. As for nobody being a dummy I dont understand what being backstage is so cool for anyways, plus it wasnt like there was a real backstage, it was more lavish on the side of the venue than the back, the only reason why the back was nice cause you could use the back door to get fresh air thats it, that venue had no real backstage.

Ticket Scam: The $100 V.I.P. tickets were advertised as Red Carpet Tickets. Once people got there and realized the REAL Red Carpet Tickets were $325, most people felt like they got the ol' Bait & Switch. Kinda felt like you got scammed by one of them cats selling laptops in the parking lot, and getting home to find out you just bought two phone books. Yellow Pages anyone?

Seperate issue

The Venue: The configuration was all bad. People who paid for Reserved Seating couldn't take advantage of it because muthafuckas sat where ever they wanted to. People who actually thought they were going to get the V.I.P. Red Carpet treatment got SRO (Standing Room Only). The seating area was a rectangle from front to back, it would have been better if it was from side to side. Better views, less seat jacking.

again security and mapping the venue

The Help: DJ kept messing up Mess/Guce's performance. Person doing all the intros for the nominees was clueless. It was hilarious hearing dude try to explain how to work the power point over the mic while on stage: truly classic !

why wasnt a radio dj conducting this event? nor promoting this event prime time major acts e40 performing federation turf talk all these acts, i mean damn keak da sneak was packin fairgrounds int he bay area all summer and bars awards couldnt pack expo center with keak e40 too short federation num yuk jacka big rich i mean come on were talking commercially promoted artists here

Them
The Ugly:The promoters and organizers of this event may never get the credit or recognition they truly deserve for trying to do something positive for the Bay Area movement. Although the show itself became unravelled, getting that many people and artists under one roof at the same time was no small task. I hear talk about the egos and all that bullshit. Fuck what you heard, the Bay was in the Building.

Me
I agree the bay was int he building, and we all made it out alive and i guess hyohy movement did that for us but they wont get the credit they deserve if the people dont realize that we had some learning to do and we got a better bars awards next year and we took the necessary steps security wise to ensure its success and safety, cause at the end of the day if there was a divisified crows the music industry could ahve seen, if they could have seen big rich and his humbleness recieve his award do his performance he might have a 2nd major deal ont he plate. We gotta get thru them, lucky for the bay amard shows shit pops off all the time but we cant give up on a 3rd annual cause were too much a dominate industry to not have one and recognize our artists and there achievements. Were too influencial and we get our shit taken advantage of too much to not recognize these people and each year we must continue to boost those efforts by implementing more influencial people to help in its success, the core idea was great but its implemntation and its motivations might not have been thought out enough yet. But I dont down booyowski i wanna help him with next year. fact is an army of people who would wanna see success with this idea who are seasoned vets and know what they are doing, it woulda been better. that BARS AWARDS as an organization needed 10-20 people pushing every day for months on sponsors and getting money for this show, getting more booths...

Them
My goal of this post is not to hate, so don't take it wrong. It's MY opinion and point of view of how things went down that night. I hope that you will not let all the rumors and speculation about what really happened discourage you from doing this again. I had the time of my life. Peace.

Me
I agree 100% the event bars awards needs to go down, and we need to go liek this. we need every artist manager from every influncial rapper from every city vallejo to oakland and the city to san jose, and we need there support for starts. we need to take responsibility for letting this event go down unorganized. then we need to let the bay shine, and put the bay on our backs. we need to implkement the right people, and figure what its gonna take to keep those people afloat, i would understand why every rap company whos doing something wouldnt take a part in it, too much opportunity for everyone.

every artist that attended this year should def take part next year outta takin responsibility, we all as managers should have demanded radio interviews for this event, cause exposure was the reason for this show. if our artists would hve been talkin on he radio about bars awards it woulda been different and im talking about radio in the morning till 5 oclock not that cheaper radio slot shit prime time baby!

Hopefully we can learn from this event and keep it GOin' 'cause there was/is a lot of potential and talent in the buildin' (and in the Bay) 4 'em not 2 be recognized. I will continue 2 support this function. Regardless of how it went I, 2, had a GOod time.

Lots of good ideas... this is the type of feedback needed to make next year work. As for being backstage, it wasn't the area itself that was nice. It was the people in attendance. Basically everybody that should've been there was, from the biggest names in the bay game to cats trying to come up, except maybe JT. Probably cause he's on tour with Snoop. But JT's thread on with Blue Carpet Treatment tour pictures was truly a blessing for those who couldn't be there.
