I have been in the promotions industry for a little over 7 years. I have been in the music business for 5. I dont know everything, but when it comes to doing major events Im not bad. I been behind some major venues in SF and the way I see it was the Bay Area and its successors really didnt get behind this project all too well.
First of all this was an awards show that was showcasing the best of the bay and its up and comers, as well as doing an awards show for the best of each class for 2006.
When tickets sales came into effect and it became a major promotional event where tickets sales to the public came into effect guess what?
The bay Area actually had a forefront to get a permit for a major venue to hold local rap music. Now as commercial to us as it is its still a local rap event. The sad part about it to me is this. When your a majro concert promoter theres things that you are responsible for as a promoter or your name is at stake.
First thing you need more than anything is a permit, and backing that an insurance waiver if the venue doesnt provide one to you. Most venues that are major dont get insurance unless its from another country and even then they'll buy the insurance for a day. Another thing you need when you deal with a rough crowds is diversifing the group up. With every commercial act the bay had in attendence why was there no promotion. Why was there every thug/rapper/streetbacker/and rap slut in attendence? I mean come on, I know people in every too white area in the bay area from pleasanton to danvile to walnut creek to santa rosa to fuckin fremont and sonoma who love e40, love too short love fab and the federation, and they woulda paid out for this show, and none of these people knew about the show, no radio. I mean come on you cant not diversify the group because its too unsafe.
Why would any city let a rap function go off without having made sure that the person who was putting on the event had all the credentials in store to make sure that the promoter was expereinced enough in areas of security and counting heads, as well as proper promotion to get the right kinds of people into the venue. I mean lets not be so politically incorrect, some cities dont want anythign other than white in there venues and that leaves us out. So believe me when i say you really need to have some major backing from city officials to put on functions like this, i know, i got a permit from oakland PD for a side show, and was later turned down due to the coliseaum being owned by two parties, 49% share in oakland, and 51% in Alameda county( alameda county board of governers said no no in case your curious).
I notice the Bay Area is really down on its artists, and though I do not condone there actions, I dont want the mass to go away from the fact that my security during the event, as well as the fans and artists didnt need to be put in jeapardy because of street politics, the promoters who ran that show didnt have the experience or budget needed to put on a function of its caliber. My assumption, and I am sorry if I am wrong to whomever this pertains to, but I am assuming the artists didnt get paid to perform, which means between e40 and everyone else, theres some big dollars saved to get basically 3-5k people in there. So the turn out should have been way better. If I know hella fans that didnt hear about the function, the venue was big enough than what went wrong? There was no money being put into it, yes they had tickets int here outlets, but no there was no radio in there. I should have been hearing live interviews in the morning about hella different rappers up for bars awards months before the show kicked off. As a consumer of music i wouldhave drivin to work listening to the radio hearing some guy named the jacka being nominated for a award in a month and giving a special performance to the bay area. That would have inspired me to pay. The venue was nice, they do import car shows there i know cause i promoted there shows for a few years and even traveled with the company who throws them , vision entertainment.
Every single company that is doing anything for the bay needs to get with booyowski and not let the bay area loose this cause the idea was great, the backing needs improvement and it needs a board of trusted businesspeople who wont let us down, and thats how the bay can put it together . Put golden mean, all bay group, city hall, smc, done deal, frisco street, and any other well known and respected rap company with 4 of the biggest concert promoters in the bay area and do this project and I guarantee every end from
major sponsers, to major venue backing, to proper implemented promotion, proper security, and all in all a total turn out. In a matter of fact if they had free bookings man they woulda left this situation rich, they lacked funds.
A few loud mouth rappers in a controlled area are still harmless, if security can control club deep they coulda easily had covered the bars awards that had only two exits i mean come on step your budget game up people, and stop laying the blame in the wrong hands, it was everyones fault we let the show go down without giving it the proper funds it needed to float let alone be successful. period!
Major concert promoting is no joke and a very costly business. Ive made 50 racks in a day and ive lost even more. You never know until the day of, and you can only hope for ticket sales to give you an idea. You have to spend money to create the want from people to go, i didnt see one clearchannel logo involved no boothes commercial wise.
