From ESPN...

"Bartolo Colon pitched a four-hit shutout over the Mariners for his first win of the season. The hard-luck loser was Jamie Moyer, who has been the starting pitcher in five of the MLB-leading 10 games in which Seattle has failed to score this season. The last pitcher to start five games by the All-Star break in which he team didn't score was Fernando Valenzuela, for the Padres and Cardinals in 1997."

Jamie has been one of the worst run supported pitchers in the last 5 years...and the M's seem to have 1-2 pitchers in the top 5 in the league every year...Ryan Franklin was another when he pitched here...why does this occur?

Four runs in seven innings isn't really a good start... It's OK but not great...

Colon only struck out two... That's not typical of his good starts... Last season when he was on he was striking out 6-10 in 9 innings... It just sounds like the balls were being hit right at the fielders...

Bartolo was pitching masterfully last night...through 5 innings he had somethin like 55 pitches....only 10 were for balls...his 2 seamer was moving in and out on hitters....

4 runs in 7 innings aint bad...

BUT...Moyer has lost 3-0,2-0 and 1-0 this season as well....not to mention 2-1...

^Like I said, it's OK... It's not bad but you're not really a "hard luck loser" when you give up more than 3 runs.

6 innings/3 runs is considered a "quality" start. Usually good enough to keep you in the game. Anything better you're usually gonna have a chance for the win.

And I'm not saying Colon didn't pitch a good game, it just doesn't sound like he's back because 2 K's in 9 innings is not normal for him when he's on his game. In his previous start his velocity was still way down from what I read.

His fastest fastball last night was 91 mph...they were saying he might not every be the 98 mph pitcher he once was....but a 4-hit shutout is impresive regardless...

I guess my question is....every year..theres a hadnful of pitchers that get very lilttle run support...why is that?

Eh, that's around a 5.00 ERA, I wouldn't consider that good at all.

But, yeah, it sucks to not get run support, but isn't he your ace? That means he's usually facing the other team's ace.. So, that could be a reason why.

But, it's similar to Clemens who never gets run support either.

its obviously just bad luck. its not like the offense just decides to go on strike when a certain pitcher pitches.

Games where Moyer lost despite having a "quality start" (6IP/3ER)

6IP/2ER vs. Schilling
8IP/1ER vs. Kazmir
6IP/2ER vs. Blanton
9IP/2ER vs. Fogg

Schilling only had an ERA around 1.50 when the M's played Boston, Kazmir is a little inconsistent but is unhittable sometimes, and Blanton owns the Mariners... But I dunno about Fogg. I think he faced the minimum that night. Otherwise, in Moyer's other starts that he lost, he didn't really deserve to win.

What about Ryan Franklin....he hadthe worst run support in 2004 i beleive it was?Or 2003...on od thoes years...and he was our number 4-5 guy that year...

I can see Moyers case...facing other aces...but what about ALL his loses and no decisions?

Colon will never again throw the heat he once did. He may have only struck out two last night, but he didn't walk anyone at all. Basically he was making pitches that hitters could put in play, but not good enough to get any hits off of. And to do it for a full 9 innings shows that it wasn't a fluke.
