well you shouldnt have brought it with you.. because your cellphone was trying to find a signal in a zone thats not part of your coverage so in return you accumulated a lot of roaming charges.. theyre still gonna charge you for it i dont think theres a way around that.

if you've been a customer for a long time and have always payed your bill on time and you call them and are over-the-top nice & polite then you might have a chance of them reducing the charge one time. I went over my minutes last month and had like $130 in over charges that they wiped clean cause I was respectful to the customer service rep and didn't except or demand it from them.

^^This might work but if you did not have international calling on there or any kind of international plan you might be SOL. I have to ask this, How did you go two months with no idea you didnt have international calling/roaming? lol

That's not true, you will only be charged roaming if you actually use your phone.

I am just saying the phone companies screw everyone in general, a lot of hidden charges that build up, unlimited text is not unlimited... you pay data charges on top of our rate.

My shit got screwed up because someone took my phone and text messaged thousands of messages.... guess what you pay for spam messages received too... totaling hundreds of dollars in charges. You can really f*** some one over by text messaging shit to them... and AT&T will not block text messaging or data... at least that's what they told me when I wanted it blocked.

1. When the mobile device is turned on or is transferred via a handover to the network, this new "visited" network sees the device, notices that it is not registered with its own system, and attempts to identify its home network. If there is no roaming agreement between the two networks, maintenance of service is impossible, and service is denied by the visited network.
2. The visited network contacts the home network and requests service information (including whether or not the mobile should be allowed to roam) about the roaming device using the IMSI number.
3. If successful, the visited network begins to maintain a temporary subscriber record for the device. Likewise, the home network updates its information to indicate that the mobile is on the host network so that any information sent to that device can be correctly routed.

If a call is made to a roaming mobile, the public telephone network routes the call to the phone's registered service provider, who then must route it to the visited network. That network must then provide an internal temporary phone number to the mobile. Once this number is defined, the home network forwards the incoming call to the temporary phone number, which terminates at the host network and is forwarded to the mobile.

for verizon, as long as you are in da US u wont be charged roaming charges? cuz my brother has my phone rite now and he's out in Cleveland!
If he has a super old plan like Digital Choice he would. If he's on Americas Choice, North Americas Choice, Nationwide he's fine. Anywhere in the United states is fine.

Dude I work for a wireless company. I already know how roaming works, unless your carrier is tripping hard, you cannot get charged for roaming if you are not using your phone.

I don't think the poster has specified whether or not he used his phone while down there. Also if he didn't did he use any internet features?

Nothing's been said and we're all fighting about this and that

If he's getting charged roaming data charges he was using his phone. Data charges likely means he was using his data device to browse the web and or sync email. International messaging also comes at a premium price so that can be part of his charges as well.
