OAKLAND, California (Ticker) - The Oakland Athletics' winning streak against the Seattle Mariners is on the verge of reaching historical proportions.
The A's will seek a 15th consecutive victory vs. the Mariners on Wednesday, when the teams conclude a three-game series at McAfee Coliseum.
Since a 6-2 loss to Seattle on April 6, Oakland has won the last 14 meetings by a combined score of 90-39. With a win Wednesday, the A's would match the major league record for most consecutive wins in one season against a divisional opponent since divisional play was adopted in 1969. Atlanta posted 15 straight wins against San Diego in 1974.
Riding a five-game winning streak overall, Oakland will give the ball to Dan Haren (10-9, 3.58 ERA), who has posted a 1.50 ERA in winning his last four starts. Embedded in that stretch was a 5-2 win at Seattle, in which he allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings August 5.
In six lifetime starts against the Mariners, Haren has gone 4-1 with a 3.35 ERA. He will be matched up against Gil Meche (9-7, 4.58), who owns a career mark of 2-6 with a 4.39 ERA against the A's.
Meche retired just three batters in his last start Friday, allowing nine runs, two hits and a season-high six walks. He has gone 0-3 with a 10.57 ERA in his last four outings after not taking a loss in his previous nine starts (5-0).
Nick Swisher and Marco Scutaro each drove in four runs to lead Oakland to an 11-2 win here Tuesday. Jay Payton went 3-for-3, raising his average to .444 (24-for-54) in 13 games against the Mariners this season.
