A's Fans - Hudson vs. Mulder - On Now!

Next Friday April 29th at 7:05 (4:05 West Coast,) Cardinals @ Braves, Hudson will be pitching for the Braves, Mulder for the Cardinals.

Before today's game (which is still in progress,) Hudson was 1-0 with a 1.04 ERA. Mulder just went 10 innings against the Astros and Roger Clemens, throwing a 4 hit complete game shutout, only facing 3 batters above the minimum.

Braves games are broadcast on TBS out here, for me (Comcast/Brentwood) it's on channel 41.

B/C billy beane saw it as that he could get what he could for the two most valuable pitchers...he wasnt gonna be able to re-sign him and get young talent at the same time, so he did what he could, and i think it was a smart move. The A's, sadly, cant just sign anyone they feel like, its truly a "moneyball" sorta thing...he knew that because other teams seemed to think Zito wasnt the way he was in 02, that Zito wouldnt be as valuable as Hudson or Mulder.

Logically, it makes sense...Zito's cost would be less, and Mulder and hudson, while two GREAT pitchers, dont have the big hook or change-up that zito has, even tho it seems like he's lost it.

Billy got rid of Hudson because after Kris Benson got signed to a deal he didn't deserve, it became apparent that Tim Hudson was worth a ridiculous amount of money on the free agent market. He's not only a great pitcher, he's got the 3rd best winning percentage of all time, and he doesn't get any run support. Even if they got a hometown discount it would have been way too much... Not only that, but Hudson hated the owners and wanted out. He felt like they depended on him too much and wouldn't go out and get the bullpen help they needed to win. They do have new owners but he was already mad... He was gonna leave regardless. (Read Aces they kind of explain this.)

With Mulder, I think there are some problems there that the A's know about but didn't want to talk about. He's a head case, and he has these mysterious injuries that cause him to miss time every year. Really, how often does a pitcher miss time because of a stress fracture in his femur? There's still something wrong, he lost 5 MPH on his fastball last year and it never came back... There's something going on there that we'll probably find out about eventually...

Zito has never been hurt, never missed a start, and he's the only big game pitcher of the three. Zito has always done well in the big games, Mulder and Hudson seem to crack under pressure for some reason. Really, with the contract situations, Mulder and Zito were the only ones who had a chance of staying, and between them I'd have to say Billy made the right choice.
