Cellmates' attempt to saw out is thwarted

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office is investigating how two murder suspects got a stash of hack saws that allowed them to attempt a jail break Thursday night.

``It's a very serious breach of security and we're going to conduct our own internal investigation,'' said Capt. Don O'Keefe.

Deputies guarding the county jail in Redwood City heard an intermittent sawing sound at 9:40 p.m. Thursday, he said. They traced the noise to a third-floor cell, where cellmates Bobby Tran and Senituli Penisoni were allegedly in the process of cleaving through a bar covering an outside window.

``They had a long way to go,'' said O'Keefe, who noted the cellmates had sawed an inch into one of several bars.

Inside the cell, deputies found four hacksaw blades, three one-pound lead fishing weights and extra socks. It's unknown how the inmates got the contraband, said O'Keefe. Officials will investigate if they stole it from contractors and maintenance workers who trickle in and out of the jail.

The alleged transgression tacks new charges on top of the murder charges both men are already facing. They've both been re-booked on suspicion of attempted escape, possession of a dangerous weapon in a jail and damage to a jail facility.

Tran, a 30-year-old transient, has been in jail since July 2003, accused of a murder in Daly City. East Palo Alto resident Penisoni has been in custody since March 2004, charged in connection with a March 19 drive-by shooting that killed Ortega Barnes in East Palo Alto.

Both men have been assigned to new cells, O'Keefe said, and extra security will guard them when they go to court.
