Report: Raiders to fire Shell

OAKLAND, California -- A decade later, Al Davis fired
Art Shell again.
Shell lasted just one season in his return to the Oakland
Raiders after he was fired as coach Thursday.
It marks the second time Shell was fired by the club. The Pro
Football Hall of Fame offensive lineman previously coached the
team from 1989-94, compiling a 54-38 record, including three
playoff appearances and a trip to the AFC championship game in
January 1991.
"While Art will no longer serve as head coach, he and Mr. Davis
have discussed and will continue to discuss opportunities for
Art to remain a valued member of the Raider organization," the
club said in a statement.
Yahoo.com reported that Shell and the Raiders were negotiating a
settlement on the final year of his contract.
After he fired Shell following the 1994 season, Davis - the
Raiders' maverick owner - said it was a move he had always
"regretted."
"The guy that will lead us back, and we will be back, is Art
Shell," Davis said when he re-hired Shell in February.
But after replacing Norv Turner, Shell guided the Raiders to a
league-worst 2-14 record this season. It was the franchise's
worst record in the Davis era (1963-present).
Oakland, which ended the season with a nine-game losing streak,
owns the top pick in April's draft.
In December, the Raiders denied a report by the NFL Network that
said Shell would be fired.
In four seasons since losing to Tampa Bay in Super Bowl XXXVII,
the Raiders have gone a woeful 15-49, losing at least 11 games
in each campaign.
Once a proud franchise, the Raiders have become a laughingstock
and an unpopular destination for many coaches because of Davis'
involvement in the day-to-day operation of the team and the
club's inability to discipline players.
