Report: Raiders to fire Shell
SportsTicker
National Football League News Wire

OAKLAND, California -- A decade later, Al Davis fired
Art Shell again.

Shell lasted just one season in his return to the Oakland
Raiders after he was fired as coach Thursday.

It marks the second time Shell was fired by the club. The Pro
Football Hall of Fame offensive lineman previously coached the
team from 1989-94, compiling a 54-38 record, including three
playoff appearances and a trip to the AFC championship game in
January 1991.

"While Art will no longer serve as head coach, he and Mr. Davis
have discussed and will continue to discuss opportunities for
Art to remain a valued member of the Raider organization," the
club said in a statement.

Yahoo.com reported that Shell and the Raiders were negotiating a
settlement on the final year of his contract.

After he fired Shell following the 1994 season, Davis - the
Raiders' maverick owner - said it was a move he had always
"regretted."

"The guy that will lead us back, and we will be back, is Art
Shell," Davis said when he re-hired Shell in February.

But after replacing Norv Turner, Shell guided the Raiders to a
league-worst 2-14 record this season. It was the franchise's
worst record in the Davis era (1963-present).

Oakland, which ended the season with a nine-game losing streak,
owns the top pick in April's draft.

In December, the Raiders denied a report by the NFL Network that
said Shell would be fired.

In four seasons since losing to Tampa Bay in Super Bowl XXXVII,
the Raiders have gone a woeful 15-49, losing at least 11 games
in each campaign.

Once a proud franchise, the Raiders have become a laughingstock
and an unpopular destination for many coaches because of Davis'
involvement in the day-to-day operation of the team and the
club's inability to discipline players.

oakland always startin a new. no one wants to coach there, no one wants to play there, and no fans go to the games. NFL needs to do the rational thing and shut it down

damn, i think he deserved at least another year. what was the point in bringin the guy back. most of the raiders problems this year came from stupid decisions by al davis. for example like benchin jerry porter for some stupid shit, but lettin moss playin when he's talkin bout wantin to be traded. straight double standard. i guess shell should have expected that anyway workin under al davis. i never understood why raiders fans always look up to al davis and always talk very highly of him. he does nothin good for the fans, he blacks out the home games if they don't sell out. he dogs a lot of coaches out, but ya know its a business. i never liked the cat though.

^^ yea he did fuck up with the Porter issue but a year is not enough time in the NFL to judge a coach...he didnt really look like a motivator on the sideline tho...

Oakland deffinately needs to move in a new direction and new coach could help...Jim mora could be good....

Bullshit!

I think this moved was definately fucked up. How do expect anyone to turn a program around in one year, especially when you don't have a whole lot to work with. This is not a team like the Saints that brought in Brees and other good players. The Raiders are also in a competitive division with the Broncos, Chargers and Chiefs (6 losses). It's hard enough just trying to get the players to buy into a coach's philosophy in one year. That's not even enough time to weed out the ignorant bastards that don't want to follow the philosophy. I watched the Raiders defense improve dramatically throughout the year.
When my Steelers hired Cowher it was not a popular move, especially when he was filling Hall of Fame Chuck Noll's shoes. 15 years later Cowher himself is retiring as a soon to be Hall of Fame coach. He has had the highest winning percentage since then. This is because the owner(s) Rooneys have patience and gave him the opportunity.

I'm sure Shell respected and agreed with the idea.. The man thought he could do it but then saw how it really was these days.... He will still be in the Raider organization
