Notes: Hennessey named closer
Messenger glad to join Giants; Ortmeier gets homer ball
By Chris Haft / MLB.com

PHILADELPHIA -- To nobody's surprise, manager Bruce Bochy said Friday that right-hander Brad Hennessey will be the Giants' first option to protect ninth-inning leads.

The need for a new closer arose Thursday night when San Francisco traded Armando Benitez to the Florida Marlins for right-hander Randy Messenger. Hennessey, who had emerged as the Giants' top setup reliever and had recorded two saves, was a logical successor.

"You start with Hennessey and the job he's doing," Bochy said. Bochy added that he might resort to a closer-by-committee system if he feels strongly that another reliever matches up favorably against an opposing lineup or if Hennessey needs rest.

Kevin Correia, Russ Ortiz and Jack Taschner were the pitchers Bochy named to compose that committee. Entering Friday, Correia had recorded a 1.26 ERA in his previous 11 outings, Ortiz was unscored upon in five innings spanning three relief outings, and Taschner has limited opponents to a .192 batting average.

Happy to be here: Messenger found an immediate advantage to becoming a Giant.

"Now I don't have to worry about giving up 756," he said, referring to Barry Bonds' prospective record-breaking home run.

After being told of the trade Thursday night, Messenger told reporters covering the Marlins that he'll get to follow the "freak show," referring to the media hype surrounding Bonds' pursuit of Hank Aaron's all-time mark. Messenger meant this in a positive way.

"It's part of history," Messenger said. "It's unbelievable what he's accomplished in this game."

Playing closer to his Sparks, Nev., home gave Messenger another reason to be happy. Although he didn't grow up rooting for the Giants, some close family friends were fans of the team and Will Clark, which acquainted him with the ballclub.

Recalling a conversation he had with Randy Winn last offseason at the wedding of Marlins ace Dontrelle Willis, Messenger said he told the Giants outfielder, "'Man, I wouldn't mind coming over and playing in San Francisco.' Next thing I know, I'm over here."

Messenger, 25, has worked steadily at improving his pitching repertoire.

"Last year I was trying to get a better feel for my slider, and I feel a lot more confident with it this year," he said. "The year before, I was working on my split-finger and got comfortable with that."
