Power outage caused nearly 2 million-gallon sewage spill in San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- The massive power outage in San Diego County also cut power to sewage pumps, causing more than 2 million gallons of sewage to spill and shuttering prime beaches.

Mark McPherson, the county's chief of land and water quality, says 1.9 million gallons of raw sewage spilled into Los Penasquitos Lagoon. It forced officials to shut down about 10 miles of beaches north of Scripps Pier through Del Mar and Solana Beach.

A second spill of 120,000 gallons into Sweetwater River, which flows into the southern part of San Diego Bay, closed Pepper Park and Bayside Park and the San Diego Bay area accessed from Silver Strand.

McPherson says some of the pump stations don't have backup power, leading to an overflow of sewage during the outage.

local musician al howard seemed to have a good night:

"Took the greatest jet black bike ride last night, the city smelled like camp fire & sounded of laughter & stories. Card games in candlelight. Constellations on the canvas above Hillcrest. Balboa Park was eerie in its empty silence, with distant sirens faint in the backdrop. And then 4 minutes from home I literally biked into a hooker on El Cajon Blvd."

sounds like she got a face full of black rubber

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. -– Sheriff's officials say the noise from a generator prompted a man to attack his neighbor during Thursday's massive blackout.

The dispute left one man in the hospital and the other in custody.

Authorities say the dispute began just before 11 p.m. when Peter Quill complained to his neighbor about a noisy generator.

The man refused despite repeated requests from his neighbor, Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said.

Quill later returned to his neighbor’s home with a flashlight and attempted to turn off the generator himself, Amormino said.

According to Amormino, when he was confronted by the homeowner, Quill hit him in the head with the flashlight,

The neighbor required stitches for a head wound.

Quill was booked at Men's Central Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

He is being held on $25,000 bail.

Roughly 1.4 million customers of San Diego Gas & Electric lost electricity Thursday afternoon, leaving thousands of homes in the dark from South County, to the Mexico border and Arizona
