(Reuters) - A gunman shot a congresswoman in the head, seriously wounding her, and killed six other people in a shooting rampage at a public meeting in Tucson on Saturday.

The attack by a suspect authorities described as having a "troubled past" took place outside a supermarket where Gabrielle Giffords, a 40-year-old Democrat, was meeting with constituents.

Among the dead were a federal judge and a 9-year-old girl. Officials said 12 people were wounded, down from a previous estimate of 13.

The suspected gunman, identified by a federal law enforcement official as Jared Lee Loughner, 22, opened fire with a semi-automatic pistol at point-blank range. The suspect was tackled to the ground by two bystanders after the shooting and was in custody.

The motive in the attack was unknown. Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said he believed Giffords was the intended target of the shooting.

"He has kind of a troubled past and we're not convinced that he acted alone," Dupnik told a news conference in reference to the suspect.

Authorities were seeking a second male in connection with the shooting,

A US congresswoman has been shot along with several other people in Arizona, US media report.

Unconfirmed reports say Gabrielle Giffords, a Democratic member of the US House of Representatives, was shot in the head at point-blank range.

The shooting is said to have happened during a public event at a grocery store in the city of Tucson.

Reports say a man ran up and opened fire at Ms Giffords, 40, and members of her staff.

but in all seriousness what will become of this? people are always yapping about shit like this needs to happen but what will be the outcome?

there already is a law signed by the governator that begining feb. 1 all sells of handgun ammunition will be bought only if the purchaser fills out the form which states adress, personal info, what model of gun the ammo is going into..AND to leave fingerprints..

this will only restrict our right even more so

Away from that and back to the subject, RIP to those killed. One was a 9 year old little girl. I have nieces and nephews that age so I can only imagine what her family is going through right now.

Sarah Palin's facebook status was a 'my thoughts and prayers' type post, and the comments have been hilarious. Whoever she pays to scrub her page cant keep up.

I wasn't saying she put a hit out like actually said "shoot her." The U.S. Rep was on her political "hit list" of people she said need to be taken out of office or something of the likes. It made quite the stir with, you know, gun targets on the areas th people she was talking about represent. Grapes posted it and what it said in one of his posts. Those were made by Palin's camp and what I was talking about is if there is any link back to him doing it for that reason then it is political suicide for her. Not saying he did, could be the furthest from the truth, I just find it odd out of all politcians it happened to one of the ones on the list.

pretty crazy man that something like this can still happen. Usually in public events like this, they have every roof covered with snipers on the roof. It's going to get worse as far as rights like a lot of people said.

Right now in oklahoma, I could go to a gun show and walk out with a fully auto weapon like it's nothin. I could go to Wal-mart, wait 3 days, it's nothin. Go in to the sporting goods store and wait 3 days... If you really wanna kill someone, 3 days ain't long at all to wait. I'm sure that'll probably change before long though with crazy stuff like this going on.
