Sometimes. I prefer to write to beats though because I customize the flow to the beat. But I can write with or without a beat. Or I can listen to a beat remember the pattern and write to it later.

I do a lot of both. Since I'm constantly writing without beats, and I have binders and binders full of lyrics...I can hit the studio and have beats made to what I've written....the shit matches 99% of the time too. But, if I happen to have beats on me, I write to 'em.

I usually start my concepts with no beat and sometimes finish then I just re-write it to a beat when I'm ready to record. I still have a notebook full of rhymes. I remember one time my old boss got ahold of it and I was kinda embarassed because my old rhymes used to be about fucking hoes and stuff. He just kind of shook his head.

Sometimes I pre-write metaphors to use later.

The way I get down is like this. I like to write the verse or song or whatever im working on as close as possible to the time I record. I just feel more connected to the writing that way. I can write a verse and then record it like a month later but I prefer to write it that morning that I record. That's part of the reason why lately I been writing in the lab.
