networking and "who you know" is especially important. i am in the middle of getting my master's in business administration (emphasis in finance) and what the degree does the most is legitimize you. for example, if you are bum off the street and try to get a business loan from the bank (no experience, no schooling, nothing) you aint getting shit. however, you walk in with a degree, or two or three, and suddenly people listen to what you have to say.
my mouthpiece game is about a 94 (out of 100). i can talk to anyone (no matter what income level, rich or poor, no matter what race of person, anywhere in the world).
getting a degree may not be the "end all" solution to finding a job, but you definitely put yourself on a different level by doing it. i am reaping the rewards now (finally, at the age of 30). couldn't be happier.
true talk
having a degree doesn't guarantee you're gonna get a great job, but without a degree a lot of employers won't even bother taking a look at your app/resume
people say... "a BA is just like having a HS diploma"
yeah... ok... so if I don't have a BA it's like I don't even have a HS diploma
and a lot of employers won't even consider you if you don't have a HS diploma
I guess what it comes down to is the time and effort of going to college worth it for you... to me it is... I know one day it will eventually pay off... I may not have a job right after I graduate... but I'll get one eventually
and shit... even if my job isn't in the field I study in college, I can almost guarantee that the fact I have a degree in ANYTHING is gonna help me get a job
it tells employers that you're more motivated and dedicated than this guy without a diploma... now don't get me wrong... I'm not saying that people without a degree are NOT motivated and hard working... because sometimes they are more so than people who go to college... but it's just the way the world works... I've accepted that fact
another thing... I see A LOT of people who are older... in the 40's and up in my classes who often already have good careers... but are going back to school so they can further their careers
a lot of times even if you can only work your way up in a company so far until you hit that point where you NEED a degree...
so I figure might as well just get it now while I'm young... it's better to have one that not have one... that's how I look at it
