We're seeing alot of attention and shine right now. I'm old enough to remember when we had the ball last time when everybody was at their prime in the game here in the Bay. You know what killed us ? Compilations. Compilation after compilation Compilation after compilation Compilation after compilation. Everybody and their momma had one out. When the industry saw this they looked at us like oh that's all they are about and we no longer had quality album making potential. Richie Rich, Hammer and 40 tried to keep us in the game back then but the rest of us messed it up. Now 40 has opened up the doors again for us and what the fuck are we doing ? Mixtapes. mixtape after mixtape mixtape after mixtape mixtape after mixtape. Mixtapes are cool but the East Coast pioneered that shit and we're late as hell with this. We need to support quality music and songs and support our homegrown emcees, producers and beatmakers. There are enough quality beatmakers right here in the Bay for all of us to make some good shit. I'm guilty of doing a mixtape or two myself but that shit is just plain lazy. Get your asses in the studio and lay down some original shit so we can keep our shine longer this time than we did last time. Im sure the mature members of Siccness will agree with me while some of the more childish folks won't come with anything intelligent.

I agree with that but that's just as true for all other regions as it is for the Bay

there are more mixtapes than albums now and a lot of the albums feel like mixtapes too - low quality flows and beats with little to no idea and imagination

The Truth Hurts

You hit the Shit right on the nose. I agree with you 100%. Also the continuous cloning didnt help. Originality is what set the Bay apart from the rest of the country. KMEL And KYLD needs to play some new shit not just Hyphy music otherwise history is going to repeat itself.

Pac's death was a major blow too. That wiped out our most prominent figure. I remember after he died, and especially after Biggie died, the mainstream shifted back to the East coast with anything Bad Boy, Jay-Z, DMX, etc.

But yea, I agree about the saturation of mixtapes too. I'll take 1 quality album every 2-3 years from my favorite rapper over 10 mixtapes by the same guy.

i really dont think pac's death affected the bay more then it affected the west coast as a whole. aside from all eyez on me he really didnt have to many features from the bay area on his albums or mention the bay area all that much to where u can say he put us on the map...he was never known as a bay area artist. but thats just my opinion.

I can feel that. Pac dying hurt LA just as much as it hurt the Bay because nobody knew he was from here. I don't think he even mentioned having lived in the Bay on his Machavelli or All Eyes albums....besides the part where him and Dre just hollered out cities at random. Hell, he did a song called live and die in LA...

He mentioned he lived in the Bay on R U Still Down, Thug Life Vol. 1 and All Eyez On Me. Also when they go to his town on the California Love video, it's not Los Angeles, it's Oakland.

No doubt, I shoulda been more clear. His death affected the whole west coast. After he died, the mainstream didn't come back west till Dr. Dre's last album.

in a minute records music people dog day alto of avenues folded they were key outlets for the bay as far as industry help also oversaturation of artist which has since doubled by now then the other distro companies started putting out anyone and there momma from the bay and more then half was unheard of wack material no one could take us seriuosly in other regions after that there was just no direction unless u were an already established artist

Its not just the mixtapes, but what they do to an album. When you release an album and drop a mixtape before the next, you kill the popularity of that first album. You are no longer supporting that album. The quality is not usually all that good, so you devalue whatever it is you are trying to build. I'm not against mixtapes, but people are killing there buzz with them out here.

Im not really trying to be a hater but I think a lack of quality music too killed the bay. if more folks spent time making a cd then dropping bullshit cds with 1-2 good tracks and the rest of them being recycled from other cds shit wouldnt be so bad. and they need to focus on more then the hyphy shit too. Pac dying didnt just hurt the west coast it hurt alot of folks and it fucked up the rap world in general because he was a major voice in the rap game and we havent had somebody like him since he died. the rap world is still trying to find that person like Pac but I doubt they ever will

Over-saturation..No name artist paying more well known artist and the public just got tired of being fooled. I know this may sound like haterism but its not intended, but I think yall just REALLY REALLY did the dam thing to the death to where I dont know if yall can ever get it like it was. Judging on 40's lackluster sales "which may not be all his fault cuz I think they kinda half stepped in the promo dept" he was and is your saving grace. The Bay mos def has regional and local stars but that cant cut it. But who am I to talk, KC aint had 1, and as for my region...well Eminem, Bone, Twista, Kanye, Nelly....I guess it aint all bad.

I'm interested in what you and others have to say, but you do need to elaborate a little more.

Over-saturation in what sense? What no name artists were paying more well known artists? My memory might be slippin' on that one, but I don't remember that too well. How was the public being fooled?

Like I said... I definitely want to hear opinions from outside the Bay, but please elaborate.

what lackluster sales? i mean, i know BART is candyland to some of u folks, but 200,000 (lets remember its been what? 6 or 8 weeks, at the most) is fuckin great. not that many rap artists sell that many nowadays (even tho we like to think so). and i dont quite get on whos being fooled. the bay didnt have enough exposure to fool any of the public. and at not being able to cut it....i think people remember the bay has had phenonemal success for the amount of independent artists...how many independent artist across the nation are pushing 10k's or 25 k's for that matter...im not trying to clown or anything, its just honest questions
