when you get a new/bigger tank plexiglass is the way to go. rounded edges are nicer than glass, and last longer. expect to pay more than glass.

arowanas are cool, but eventually dominate the entire tank. fuckers get real big real fast.

i have a 55gal fresh with a bunch of jewel parrot fish. cool looking but more prone to stress and start turning black. i found out why finally. to color the fish they are dipped in acid to remove their protective slime coating and dyed. if the dye doent take they are then injected with dye. this process leaves the fishes immune system weak. i will not but these again

I have a 55 gallon African cichlid tank. Very addicting! lol. I started out with a 20 gallon community goldfish tank. Then scored me a free 55 gallon acrylic tank from http://www.freecycle.org/

Bought some polish scratch remover for like 15 bucks, and now it looks almost brand new. For those that want to score some free or cheap fish tanks to get started, try freecycle or even craigslist.

As for cichlids, most south american/central american cichlids grow very large (Oscars, Green Terrors, Flowerhorns) so unless you're working with 90+ gallon tanks, don't fuck with them. They will die on you once they outgrow the tank.

I have African cichlids, which are a bit smaller in size (average 5-7 inches) but are VERY colorful, and also very aggressive and territorial. You can keep about 15-20 in a 55 gallon tank. They are very fun to watch. Just do some research on how to take care of them. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/index.php
