Sledge Becomes Second To Test Postive For Steroids
By Will Kimmey
January 14, 2003

Expos outfield prospect Terrmel Sledge became the second baseball player in eight days to draw a two-year ban from international competition for testing positive for a steroid.

Sledge's name was posted on the United States Anti-Doping Agency's sanctions list Tuesday, citing a positive test in October when he was trying out for the U.S. Olympic qualifying team. Sledge's urine test showed traces of 19-norandrosterone and 19-noretiocholanolone, the same chemical derivatives related to androstenedione that got Angels righthander Derrick Turnbow a two-year ban on Jan. 5.

Sledge, 26, hit a career-high 22 home runs last season at Triple-A Edmonton, doubling his best previous season total. He entered the 2003 season with 34 home runs in 1,564 career at-bats. Sledge was added to the Expos 40-man roster after the 2002 season, and 40-man players are not subject to drug testing.

After Turnbow's positive test Gene Orza, associate general counsel of the players' union, said andro is a legal supplement in the U.S. and the substance was not forbidden by major league baseball.

"Derrick Turnbow did not test positive for a steroid," Orza said. "He tested positive for what the IOC (International Olympic Committee) and others regard as a steroid, but the U.S. government does not."

Turnbow was the first athlete sanctioned by the USADA in 2004, and Sledge and track and field participant Mickey Price became the second and third on Tuesday. Five of the 26 athletes sanctioned in 2003 tested positive for the same substance as Turnbow and Sledge. Those athletes competed in cycling (two), track and field (two) and swimming. No other baseball players appear on USADA sanction lists, which date back to 2001.

Turnbow acknowledged taking an over-the-counter nutritional supplement containing 19-norandrosterone, known in gyms as "19-nor," but said he "didn't know that what I was taking was going to make me fail a drug test, period."

Neither Sledge nor the Expos could be reached for comment.

I respect everything Anaheim has done this offseason but...

Don't blow your load too soon.

The Seattle Mariners had the best all-around (combining both bullpen and starters) pitching in the West last year, and they got rid of their 2 aging relievers (Nelson & Rhodes), got themselves Eddie Guardado (41 saves) to go along w/ Hasegawa (who had an ERA under 1 for 5 months last year) and the flamethrower Rafael Soriano (who might be the best reliever of the group, he throws a legit 98, ERA of 1.53, K:BB ratio of 5.75 to 1).

Offensively, we won't be as strong as Anaheim but Halos don't get overexcited on us, the Mariners will be there to fight you guys for the division.

Fuck the weak ass Giants! A's have ALWAYS dominated the BAY. Don't make me bring up stats and championships. Win a world series and then maybe someone will listen to you.
We're talking about the future not the past. A's have a sicc rotation but I think they'll come in 3rd in the division.

Actually WE'RE not talking about anything. I was responding to LiuKang's hater ass post. He can run his mouth all he wants, the FACT is that the A's OWN Bay Area baseball, period.

And I find it funny that so many people once again, count the A's out just because Tejada left. But you all fail to realize that the first half of the season, it was Eric Byrnes and Tim Hudson who were keeping us alive. Tejada wasn't hitting shit. He didn't start to come around until the last third of the season and then he CHOKED (like usual) in the post season and batted .012 along with Chavez, while EVERYONE else was batting .600, Guillen with a fuckin broken hand, while Tejada was going 2 for 24. Tejada had one fluke MVP season and just can't seem to get hits in the post season when it matters most. So, fuck him. People said the A's were done when Giambi left, and they still won the AL West and made the playoffs. So if history has any say so, don't count the A's out just yet. Besides, the Angels are the only team that actually made a real upgrade. Texas ain't doin shit and Seattle didn't do shit but throw more money at that Jap Ichiro Suzuki. So we'll see when the season's over. Either way, I guaran-fuckin-tee you that the pussy ass Giants won't win a world series any time soon. Hell, they haven't won one at all. At least I've seen my team bring world series trophies to the Bay Area.

You're right about people not giving the A's a chance the last couple years when Giambi left. Oakland deserves credit for the past 2 years.

To say that Seattle hasn't done shit is just wrong though. You must not know much about baseball if you think adding Raul Ibanez, Eddie Guardado, Rich Aurilia, Scott Spiezio and subtracting Jeff Horseshit Cirillo is "not doing shit." Those are all significant upgrades. And losing Sasaki opens up 18 million over the next 2 years so Seattle might even get Pudge or a stud at the trade deadline.

And by the way, unless you are 30 years old you have only seen the A's bring one trophy (not trophies) back to the Bay Area.
