my 2 cents:
The biggest example for me of how Quinn fell from what was his for the taking!

Back in the early to mid 90's i could have sworn i was the biggest San Quinn fan...then one of my homies told me to check out another brotha from Fillmoe and showed me the Messy Situation cd(rare classic cd).
I wasnt really feeling it at the time but i thought the beats were tight. To me his flows werent even close to Quinn if my homie wanted to compare. Which still holds true to this day...i dont think anyone would argue that Quinn is a much better lyricist than Mess...Its true Quinn is better... BUT

But if you follow they're path since their Classic Bay Area hit album Exposive Mode its obvious Messy Marv has the lead in the rap game of the two.
As much of a fan i am of Quinn i hate that he hasnt held up to his potential and i especially hate it when they say "this is the album thats gonna bring it back" or "this album quinns bringing back tha old quinn"

ive always bought quinns album w/o hearin it first and ever since "the hustle continues" ive been very disapointed and WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER QUINN ALBUM W/O HEARING IT FIRST!!! ive got burned too many times!
3 or 4 good songs on an album aint a fuckin classic!
"mighty quinn" was his most back pack move and every album after followed almost to the same formula. Which equals to a very weak boring but mature album...back/pack mature is not the kinda rap i wanna listen to!(that dont mean i want hyphy shit)

Which is why im now a lil more of a Messy Marv fan than of San Quinn, i know for sure i can buy an authentic Messy Marv album and it will slap!!
Messy Marv has been more consistent, his style of rap has basicly stayed the same,has a better ear for a beat and gives his fans what they want to hear!

Supposedly "this next San Quinn album is the one" LOL yea right! i aight falling for that shit again!!
inside im always pulling for it and hope it is...but i aint gonna buy it w/o listening...and if its just 3 or 4 good songs imma burn that shit! its the only way i can justify my hard earned money gone to waste these last 10 years of supporting Quinn unconditionally!

Overall Quinn is a full packaged Emcee. IMO he's a Local Nas. Back then when E-40 got his deal with Jive I would always tell folks that 40 should keep Quinn a lil tighter under his wings. A cross promotion campaign GetLow/Sic Wit It would of Sizzled!

look at it this way i think 50 is older than quinn (i know he's been major for awhile but he was signed when he was 26) quinn is 28. Watch this next album will get picked up by a major or after the album drops he will.

I feel the same way as the thread starter. IMO The rock was ok but not as great as it was hyped up to be. " Look What I've Done " was the only track that I loved from the album even though it wasn't a bay sounding track. Other than that, the production was quality, but didn't appeal to me. I don't know if they were trying to venture beyond The Bay and Westcoast, but it wasn't anything great compared to hits from the east/south/midwest regions and wherever else. I give you my word was an awesome album, great beats and had a real energy to it.

i honestly dont think quinn will be picked up by a major. its not like he is under the major's radar...and at the same time i dont think he needs to be signed to a major. for some people the independent route works better for them. he's done deal..he built that shit. i'm sure he's living comfortably with his done deal establishment.

if you noticed, a lot of the people getting signed to majors recently are the future of bay area rap.

to quinn's defense:

lol "he's not under the major's radar"... anyone getting good spins independently and selling over 15k indi is under their radar!

if u do a survey i'm sure most people will say that "the rock" was actually his best album. i know everybody has their own opinions but sometimes u aren't in the majority. thats who we cater to: the masses!

i think quinn is probably the only big name rapper out here that has not been to meet with the majors since the movement jumped off. that doesn't mean that we haven't been in contact with these labels.. there's a strategy to this shit. if u think quinn cant go to ny and get a deal right now u r crazy!! when u sign to a major theres a lot that goes into it. its not as simple as u think. they've seen everybody out here live n direct and the only people that got ARTIST deals are federation, j. valentine, and clyde... not saying anything against the dist. deals that people got cuz thats big too.

say what u want but im just gonna keep staying quiet over here.... the production alone on this album is gonna shock people. too much good/crazy shit happening right now with us.... so go back to talking about ghostriding and hyphy references.

I think its just plain stupid to say Quinn is overrated or Quinn is washed up. Quinn deserves everything he is getting now and more. Arguably he is the best MC in the Bay and the whole West Coast and that's really saying something considering how more advanced the game has gotten here in the last four or five years.

Quinn is easily my favorite rapper and I will support everything he does. I agree with the thread started that "I Give You My Word" was probably his hottest album, but "The Rock" is not far behind, and was packaged together very well. I think its only a matter of time before someone takes Quinn to a larger venue and he gets major recognition. Its a shame The Rock only sold 15k because there are more than 15,000 Quinn fans in San Francisco let alone the whole Bay.

I think Quinn still can mature and grow, but you can't ask much more than for solid albums, and his last two are better than 99.9% of the rap we listen to here in the Bay.

I think when you made this post, what you were looking for was constructive criticism for Quinn, where you would like to see him take his music and how you would like it to sound. True, most of us our fans, and ultimately it is Quinn's desicion, but its nice to consider the combos/beats/concepts you'd like to hear an artist producing. Personally I love Quinn's style but agree that there is a lot of mobb music. I love the mob music, but (and we've had this conversation on the Socal board) there are 100,000 other rappers making mob music, so when you are releasing Mobb music/gangsta albums, there is a diluted pool and also more well known mainstream and regional rappers who have carved out their sales. Obviously Quinn should keep the Mobb music going, but I also think a critical component to rap music which has been lost in the hyphy craze is the intellectual social commentary. I would love to hear more songs like "Look What I Done For Them" or even more political music. I'd also like to hear Quinn working with producers who are more creative in their beat choices like Nick Peace and Rob Lo. I think a lot of the features Quinn uses are great, but it would also be interesting to hear him with other regional rappers like Mitchy Slick from Dago or Saigon from the East Coast which would make for good music and maybe more record sales in those areas.

But dont think Im complaining because Quinn is a Pro and been doing this for years, plus his camp knows what they are doing and will continue to turn out quality albums. I haven't bought one Done Deal/Deal Done release I did not like.
