Polls Show Many Americans are Simply Dumber Than Bush

By Paul Craig Roberts

01/29/06 "ICH" -- -- Two recent polls, a Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg
poll and a New York Times/CBS News poll, indicate why Bush is getting
away with impeachable offenses. Half of the US population is incapable
of acquiring, processing and understanding information.

Much of the problem is the media itself, which serves as a
disinformation agency for the Bush administration. Fox "News" and
right-wing talk radio are the worst, but with propagandistic outlets
setting the standard for truth and patriotism, all of the media is
affected to some degree.

Despite the media's failure, about half the population has managed to
discern that the US invasion of Iraq has not made them safer and that
the Bush administration's assault on civil liberties is not a necessary
component of the war on terror. The problem, thus, lies with the absence
of due diligence on the part of the other half of the population.

Consider the New York Times/CBS poll. Sixty-four percent of the
respondents have concerns about losing civil liberties as a result of
anti-terrorism measures put in place by President Bush. Yet, 53 percent
approve of spying without obtaining court warrants "in order to reduce
the threat of terrorism."

Why does any American think that spying without a warrant has any more
effect in reducing the threat of terrorism than spying with a warrant?
The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which Bush is disobeying,
requires the executive to obtain from a secret panel of federal judges a
warrant for spying on Americans. The purpose of the law is to prevent a
president from spying for partisan political reasons. The law permits
the president to spy first (for 72 hours) and then come to the court for
permission. As the court meets in secret, spying without a warrant is no
more effective in reducing the threat of terrorism than spying with a
warrant.

Instead of explaining this basic truth, the media has played along with
the Bush administration and formulated the question as a trade-off
between civil liberties and protection from terrorists. This formulation
is false and nonsensical. Why does the media enable the Bush
administration to escape accountability for illegal behavior by putting
false and misleading choices before the people?

The LA Times/Bloomberg poll has equally striking anomalies. Only 43
percent said they approved of Bush's performance as president. But a
majority believe Bush's policies have made the US more secure.

It is extraordinary that anyone would think Americans are safer as a
result of Bush invading two Muslim countries and constantly threatening
two more with military attack. The invasions and threats have caused a
dramatic swing in Muslim sentiment away from the US. Prior to Bush's
invasion of Iraq, a large majority of Muslims had a favorable opinion of
America. Now only about 5 percent do.

A number of US commanders in Iraq and many Middle East experts have told
the American public that the three year-old war in Iraq is serving both
to recruit and to train terrorists for al Qaeda, which has grown many
times its former size. Moreover, the US military has concluded that al
Qaeda has succeeded in having its members elected to the new Iraqi
government.

We have seen similar developments both in Egypt and in Pakistan. In the
recent Egyptian elections, the radical Muslim Brotherhood, despite being
suppressed by the Egyptian government, won a large number of seats. In
Pakistan elements friendly or neutral toward al Qaeda control about half
of the government. In Iraq, Bush's invasion has replaced secular Sunnis
with Islamist Shia allied with Iran.

And now with the triumph of Hamas in the Palestinian election, we see
the total failure of Bush's Middle Eastern policy. Bush has succeeded in
displacing secular moderates from Middle Eastern governments and
replacing them with Islamic extremists. It boggles the mind that this
disastrous result makes Americans feel safer!

What does it say for democracy that half of the American population is
unable to draw a rational conclusion from unambiguous facts?

Americans share this disability with the Bush administration. According
to news reports, the Bush administration is stunned by the election
victory of the radical Islamist Hamas Party, which swept the US-financed
Fatah Party from office. Why is the Bush administration astonished?

The Bush administration is astonished because it stupidly believes that
hundreds of millions of Muslims should be grateful that the US has
interfered in their internal affairs for 60 years, setting up colonies
and puppet rulers to suppress their aspirations and to achieve, instead,
purposes of the US government.

Americans need desperately to understand that 95 percent of all Muslim
terrorists in the world were created in the past three years by Bush's
invasion of Iraq.

Americans need desperately to comprehend that if Bush attacks Iran and
Syria, as he intends, terrorism will explode, and American civil
liberties will disappear into a thirty year war that will bankrupt the
United States.

The total lack of rationality and competence in the White House and the
inability of half of the US population to acquire and understand
information are far larger threats to Americans than terrorism.

America has become a rogue nation, flying blind, guided only by
ignorance and hubris. A terrible catastrophe awaits.

^^Whoooooopy dooo!

Do you believe the polls were falsified or doctored?

That's actually a real issue to talk about, not whether or not the polltakers are from liberal newspapers.

My two cents:
The reason why Americans are dumb is we practice our politics in isolation, in the confines of only our family and close accquantinces. There is no debate, no deliberation, and no increased knowledge of America's political situation if a group of republicans who all associate sit down at a bar and say "George Bush is Great," likewise, a group of liberals at a resturant saying "fuck bush." We are set in our ways, and, when one comes to the realization that this is so and brings politics up in public, they are inpolite and politically incorrect.

Secondly, we refuse to hold our politicians accountable for their actions. If the majority of Americans thought the war in Iraq was a mistake in 2004 then they should not have re-elected the man who made the decision. But at least the one's who voted for Bush voted, that's how Bush one the election.

This was a very good read but Id also like to point out this is not only an American problem. If you think countries in the Middle East, Africa, Europe or anywhere else are not being fooled by their media and are not all but set in their ways you are kidding yourself. The next generation is being socialized to follow a political pattern against objectivity everywhere.

Good read.

However, IMO, one of the smartest things Bush has accomplished through his presidency was to fool the majority of the public into believing he is an idiot. People are generally afraid of people who are much smarter than them out of fear that the smarter person will take advantage of the less intelligent individuals. On the other hand, when people feel they are smarter than another individual (as most Americans feel they are smarter than Bush) they don't feel the same threat but rather become complacant toward the person and allow them to do such things as pass Patriot Acts without much reservation. If you feel you are smarter than someone you don't believe they can take advantage of you, which is the very reason Bush has convinced the American public they are smarter than him. He is not a stupid person. He graduated from Yale (although his grades were sub par), got an MBA from Harvard, scored a 1206 on his SATs and has an estimated IQ of 125+. He may not be a genius, but he is much smarter than most people believe.

This man makes no mention whatsoever of the need to `quickly' tap these people, and the fact that terrorists aren't exactly the kind of people who make 25 calls a day. That he would not even attempt to debunk this, or even bring it up, shows how partisan and closed-minded (rather than informative) this piece really is. I have no problem with this man. But when he gives the impression that the NSA story is a 15 second segment on newscasts, and not something that has any arguments (i.e., details) in favor of it, is misleading.

As for his `point', he has destroyed it. He complains that people are ignorant, that the Media is not presenting all the facts, and then he turns around and misleads and purposely leaves out information himself. This man is at the very least sloppy, and at most and more likely, a coward.

Were we to assume that he DIDN'T do all of this, these same things he self-righteously accuses the media of doing.......there still exists no reading of the Constitution, or of the FISA law. Only a bland interpretation. This man is so busy commenting and whining and bashing, that he is leaving out the actual KEY ISSUES at hand.

MediaMatters.org -- This and sites like it are worth going to. I may not agree with them, but they ALWAYS provide context, direct quotes, direct text from legislation, and so on. People like these are nothing more than Libtards-in-Disguise, that try and trick you into believing they are open-minded and non-partisan and all this such nonsense, when in reality, they are far from it.

This is where I disagree with the article. Simply being concerned about civil liberties does not mean you will, without exception, vote against any and all restriants or perceived limitations on it. Being concerned about Mad Cow does not mean you stop eating meat.

Why does the media enable the Bush
administration to escape accountability for illegal behavior by putting
false and misleading choices before the people?
People believe that there is a tradeoff. I don't argue this point either. The absolute most militaristic country will have less of a threat from not only attack, but antithetical ideology, political protest, and democratic action.

It is extraordinary that anyone would think Americans are safer as a

Of this there can be no debate. The only way one would disagree would be to argue that M16s and smart bombs prevent terrorism. The Soviet Empire was responsible for up to 100 million deaths, yet they still could not completely contain their people.

A number of US commanders in Iraq and many Middle East experts have told
the American public that the three year-old war in Iraq is serving both
to recruit and to train terrorists for al Qaeda, which has grown many

1. The average person doesnt hear this.

2. Those who do are quite likely to simply write it off, as with all bad news, as liberal propaganda.

3. The average Amerikan is quite unschooled about foreign affairs, the world, and how culture, region, and ethnic identity play a part in international relations.

  • the radical Muslim Brotherhood
  • Pakistan elements friendly or neutral toward al Qaeda
  • Islamist Shia allied with Iran.
  • Hamas
Have all benefitted greatly from Bush's Middle Eastern policy.

Bush has succeeded in displacing secular moderates from Middle Eastern governments and replacing them with Islamic extremists. It boggles the mind that this disastrous result makes Americans feel safer!
It is somewhat similar to the Swedes publically stating they don't have problems with child pornography (they have the worst child porn/exploitation problem in the world), Arab media blaming Zionists for everything from Al Qaeda (while simultaneously praising al Qaeda) to oppressive Middle Eastern governments they themselves support, to African Union members who rallied against US/UN help in Darfur while doing absolutely nothing, to Japanese men believing that porn showing 8 year old girls forcibly penetrated by foreign objects and bleeding profusely is Ok while talking loud in public is a moral offense, etc.

It is quite boggling to see our own people's views and responses. But they are in no way special.

What does it say for democracy that half of the American population is
unable to draw a rational conclusion from unambiguous facts?

This will be, understandably, written off by our good Americans as liberal propaganda. A mere label of "liberal" is sufficient to derail the credibility of anyone or anything. All hail the Right-Wing noise machine.

2). No insulting or attacking members without contributing to the topic or explaining why you’re insulting a member. In other words- I don’t care if you insult other members as long as you stay within topic or can back your shit up with some sort of logic. You cannot reply with “you’re gay” or “you suck”, etc. Again, add some meat to your posts.
