The Andes are also home to a major volcanic belt which is divided into four regions of both dormant and active volcanoes. Recently the Nevado del Ruiz volcano erupted in 1985 producing a current of hot gas, rock, mud, and debris burying the town of Armero and causing about 23,000 deaths.
