I have a job I like, pays well, like my co-workers, like my boss, love the location, decent benefits, but awesome "extras" like event tickets and what not.........BUT......it's in an industry thats going downhill, may never be what it once was and has a potential for layoffs at any moment (even though I have survived almost 5 years now).

I have an ex co-worker who got laid off from the same job I did 5 years ago and moved to a new company and is now the hiring manager. They have a job opening, I already did all the interviewing, and from the sounds of it the job offer will be coming my way today or tomorrow.

It's with a company who's product is growing more and more profit by the day, hiring all the time (no layoffs ever in 6 year existence), way better benefits ($$ wise for me and family), I would imagine the pay will be the same if not a tad better, location ok but not as good, they pay for parking or my public transportation, but the extras would be null there.

argggh what do I do stay and wish for the best and keep going places with my family for free (sporting events, plays, concerst etc...), or just move to new company which shouls come with no hint of layoffs anytime in the near future??

How old are you? My parents just made this decision and are now moving to Washington State because of the job security. Pretty similar situations except my dad is 68..so with age being an issue job security was the most important.

If I was under 35 I would stay with the job that I like and hope for the best, you still have plenty of years to work, who knows you could keep in touch with the other company and if things don't work out with the current..go to the new one. My dad's new company has been offering him jobs over the last 3 years, the offer that was good enough finally came.

My 2 cents.

if it sounds like something in your best interest, do it

thats sort of a question posed for an individual that knows the technicalities of everything thats making you question whether/whether not to in the first place..

for instance i could quit my job and get a new one, but i guaruntee i wont be allowed to sit on my ass and sleep like i do here. so in that sense id keep it until it runs out. if you feel the need for something new, try it.

tickets to sporting event/concerts vs. job security... doesnt really look like a contest. you got a family, its a no brainer buddy.
in that regard it does look like a no contest, but in other regard, layoffs are in other depts not mine, and if there were layoffs in my spot I could possibly be safe so it's not a life or death for my family situation.

wait till you get downsized at your current job and then jump ship to the other place
this is what I wish could happen but like I said, offer could be coming my way as soon as this afternoon so thats not a possiblty unless my curent job says layoffs in the next 2 weeks.

Dont wait for anything to happen. YOU have to take your career into your own hands, fuck company loyalty because that does not exist. They will cut you loose to make thier bottom line so you should be ready to do the same to them at any time. Take this time to check out your options and try to upgrade your work situation and then jump ship before it sinks completely...

Then if you get an offer make it worth your while to move. Tell them how much you want in order to get you to switch. Tell them you are a loyal employee and don't want to leave your job hanging, you don't want to do it to your current employer and they can expect you not to do it to them if it ever comes up while you're with them. They gotta give you enough to pull you out of where you are.

Significant increase in take home and benefits is a must if a company is going to poach workers.

If the money isn't there don't be tha scary one and not say anything. If they want you, they'll pay what it takes to get you.

That is how you'll know if you should stay or leave.

Think up how much more money it would take to make you even happier than the job you are at now. Then make sure you get it.
