WRONG. Latinos refer to ALL people of Latin America which includes Mexico.

Also, Hispanic derives from Hispania, which refers to the Iberian Peninsula which includes Spain, Portugal, Andorra, Gibraltar and France. It was adapted in the US in the 70s for the Census and has been defined differently depending on which government agency you ask.

negros is just spanish for blacks.
seriously. negro=black in spanish. its not a racist term at all.

So how come only white and black people get colors? We don't call Asians "yellows" or Latinos "browns". See the flaw in that logic?

I personally don't like throwing color on peoples ethnic background, as reducing someone to a color is pretty fuckin demeaning...

Native Americans makes sense imo because they are literally native people of the Americas.
Or American Indians is fine to distinguish they're not from India.
Good question though.

I prefer to be addressed by my name...Jesse. Or motherfucker. It really depends on the day.

True, but America was a term given by Europeans. For all we now, it was called Makachuia before those pale faced fucks landed here.

What about for the Indians/Native Americans/American Indians/etc
My favorite of all is First Nation. So they considered what is now the US, a nation? Isn't nation a European term?

I thought they only used the term First Nation up here in Canada.
That is probably true. I frequent Vancouver so I may have picked it up from there. But either way, Canada is still part of North America.

Caucasian is just another term for white, and European-American would put every single white person into one category. And actually, some Mexicans and South Americans are white as fuck, so it would be incorrect to call every white person a "European American". I personally would take offense to that...because I'm far different than say, a German-American. That would be like calling a Jamaican "African-American"...when the dude isn't African.

In any case, I like to be called Italian-American or Irish-American. I don't like being called AMERICAN, because the only group of people that TRULY hold that title are the natives. And actually, America was named after an Italian cat named Amerigo Vespucci...so the Natives were identified by tribe before that was fucked up by Europeans.

America is a melting pot, so when describing somebody that is born here, we label them with their ethnic origin, and where they are from. It's not racist, it's people keeping their identities. It keeps us diverse.

No entirely true, as jamaican's have African ancestry.

Which is still not correct, as I mentioned before, America is a term given by Western Europeans to a land that was not their's

Possibly, but using colors isn't the way to go, yet it is done constantly and without any second thought. Especially since black people aren't technically black and white people sure as fuck ain't white (well, most of us anyway).

Well my main point in this thread is to say you don't have to address me in politically correct terms as long as you treat me with respect. Respect is more important than trying to be all pc. You could call me a Mexican a Salvadoreno a hispanic a latino a chicano whatever just treat me with respect. Don't call me a Mexican american but treat me like a spic or wetback.

Everyone has a different perception of what respect is, though. You may be ok with that term, but the next man might wanna put you in the hospital for it.

Right, but we're talking about country of origin...either at birth or where the family came from. If we want to melt it down like that, we're all African American, because science says we all started in one place.

Right again...I fixed this part in my previous post. America was named after an Italian...and I'm pretty sure that Natives were identified by tribe and know for a fact that it did not involve "American" at the end until the white people came.

I don't agree with colors whatsoever...I agree with ethnic background. I've always said nobody is truly BLACK or WHITE. Albino's aren't even white, they are pink. In any case, when describing people I don't use white or black...if nobody knows who I'm talking about, I usually describe physical traits..

Jamaican's have a much closer lineage with Africa than you or I, by like, ALOT. But I see what you're getting at. African's arrived in Jamaica around 400 years ago, and 92% of the demographic of Jamaica is technically African(per Wikipedia) as of 2008.

Exactly.

I would be lying if I said I did not. You ever notice that many people, when describing someone of a different skin color than either the person they are talking to or themselves, often use race as the first description? Its just an easy way to build a schema mentally.

africans want to be categorized different than africans born in america. why wouldnt they? were entirely different.

edit: secondly, whos to say youd know somenoes racial background by looking at them? thats not something you should feel cool with jumping to conclusions about
