With all of this commotion going on about Kramer, it is important (for all parties involved) to have this discussion about race and the "n" word. As a white college student majoring in African/African-American studies, I have been involved in many a discussion surrounding the word. First off, to fully understand the word, one has to realize the history of oppression, degredation, power relations, and the other byproducts of both slavery/colonialism and the "n" word itself.

I think that this thread should be left open as an important discussion on these issues. Posts that are made should be intelligent and relevant to the discussion. If you are not sure what to say, don't say anything. It is just as important to read what people are writing and to learn from them. I hope this thread can be maintained (in a respectable manner).

Damn, i dont post around here much but...this topic seems to be interesting. I happen to be white, and i am not racist in any way. I dont even like to say black people or white people...fuck that we are all just people. Its simple as that. The way I look at it is historicaly nigger was a word used by white people to put down black people. They used it the same as they would call a dumb person a retard, or an old person a Geezer. It wasnt until the late 50's early 60's that the word nigga came on the scene. It was during the civil rights movement when black people started to try to do better for themselves and started to try deflect some of the hate associated w/ that word and started to use it as a way to empower themselves. Alot of people looked at it like ,If I can take my family and friends calling me a Nigga I can take it from some stranger that dont know me. That didnt make it easier to hear... but it was easier to tolerate.

The word cracker dosent nearly have as much history behind it or social relavence. The pilgrams wernt called Crackers when they got off the Mayflower by the native americans here. They were treated w/ respect...until they took all there land away, took there women and children and put them into slavery and labled them as savages (yes there were Indian slaves). Now when black people got off the boats there wasnt a feast waiting for them, and I guarentee the 1st english words they learned was NEGROS (the origin of the "N" word) and slave. The only crackers they knew was the ones getting feed to them until a master came and bought them.

When you try to look at these to words you HAVE to look at the history of them to see why people feel the way they do when they hear them. Most of these feelings have been passed down for generations. I always get pissed when my white friends ask, why cant I use the N word. I tell them straight up... you havent earned the wright to use the word playa.. and leave it at that. It dont matter how many black friends they have...or how many music vids they watch...they wont ever have that shared cultural background as black people.

You can hate what I have to say but its real talk. White folks can call eachother crackers all day all night and will just look dumb as fuck. Black people will use nigga till the wheels fall off and use it with such beauty that everyone wants to use it, its just the way it is. and here is my question, what did todays black youth do to earn it?? their parents, parents, earned that right so when will it stop. as a quick comparison lets jus say if somebody has rich parents and find themselfs rather weathly. its one thing to do good things with the money passed down but its another to take advantange of it when the person who recievs it has no clue about the struggle it took to earn that money. and to me it the same for black youth, they don't know the stuggle that blacks went thru in that time period. ok maybe they still feel racism but so does everybody. my problem is when will this bs stop. maybe the next generation of people will start to see a change. but until everybody agrees that whats wrong for one ethnic group is wrong for all ethnic groups then this converstaion will go nowhere.

on another note, where i grew up, it was a small fuckin town of 700 white people and no black people because they were run off if they so much as stopped by to use the town gas station. there were members of the kkk in the town, and i went to school with guys whose fathers and grandfathers were in the kkk and they followed in their footsteps, and i can say for sure that the kkk loves black people calling each other "niggas" because, as much as black people think they're using that word to break down barriers and throw it in the faces of racists, they're not...it's a word created to demean blacks and the kkk loves seeing oprah lose a fight to ludacris on her show about whether the word "nigga" is ok to use

don't use stereotypes as an excuse to use the word...i had this same discussion with this guy in my sociology class. He's black and does all the shit that would normally fall into the stereotype I think you're talking about. You're damn right you're expected to fit into a stereotype as we all are, but that doesn't mean you have to do it. Don't go slinging the word "nigga" around as a way to destroy the stereotype...that's fucking retarded. Don't use the misfortunes of others to explain why a group of people act as they do. I can see why people would get upset about the shit you describe, but by using the word, you're only reinforcing the stereotypes on you and reinforcing the behavior.
