This speech was read at the funeral I attended last week for a person I went to school with who was shot and killed in front of Parkway Liquors here in Vallejo. It was so powerful that when Ms. Sheila Johnson got done with it, the whole church was on their feet, black, white, asian, mexican, whatever. Anyone who has a young black male in their life should print this out, and pass it on to them.

A Day of Reckoning
Today is February 12, 2010. The month of February is celebrated all over the country as Black History month. There is an old Negro hymn that said, “We shall overcome.” Overcome from racism and prejudice. Over 50 years ago Black men, women and children had to worry about their lives being taken or brutalized by another race, whether it has been forgotten or unlearned here we are in the year 2010 and Black women, men and children have to worry about our own race brutalizing each other. It is a slap in the face for all the Civil Rights Leaders and people who lost blood, sweat and tears to pave the way for us as a people to be able to live amongst one another as a support to one another, NOT to tear down one another. We have not only stood still, but as a race, we are going backwards. Anyone here born after 1965, do you think Martin Luther King Day is just a day to get off work or school? Go read about him. Study the history of our plight as Black people. Quit disrespecting us, quit disrespecting yourselves. Quick to say “They, he or she” disrespected me. Learn the word. You think you bad? Oh you’re angry? Oh you’ve had some bad breaks in life, well welcome to life. Some of you know and some of you may not, but today I’m putting you on notice. There is a God and trust this! He sits high and looks low, so you can keep walking around in a haze if you want too.
But there will be a day of Reckoning!
