Thats Make the total Number of shooting deaths 12
12 Weekend Homicides In Bay Area, Half In Oakland(CBS 5 / KCBS / BCN) OAKLAND Oakland police are concerned the Fourth of July holiday could be a violent one, following a spike in homicides over the weekend.

More than a dozen people were killed over the weekend in the Bay Area, six of them in Oakland. The rash of shooting and stabbing incidents raised Oakland's 2007 homicide total to 57.

No arrests were reported in any of the cases.

According to Oakland police spokesman Roland Holmgren, the deadly surge began about 12:35 a.m. on Friday, when officers were dispatched to the 2531 block of Parker Street to respond to a report that a man had been stabbed.

Holmgren said medical personnel arrived on the scene and transported the victim to Highland Hospital in Oakland, where he died as a result of his injuries.

He said the victim didn't have any identification and his identity is unknown at this time.

Holmgren said that sometime in an eight-hour period between 1:45 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. Friday, officers were flagged down and directed to an apartment at 3633 Patterson St. to investigate a report of an unresponsive woman.

He said responding officers found Jacqueline Mason, 44, bloody and unresponsive in her bedroom. Emergency medical personnel responded but were unable to revive her and she was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

According to Holmgren, homicide investigators were called to the scene and discovered that Mason had been involved in a domestic dispute with her boyfriend, 27-year-old Phillip White of Indianapolis.

Holmgren said it appears that White beat and/or stabbed Mason to death and fled in her white Chevrolet van, which is missing. He said law enforcement agencies nationwide have been alerted about White, who also has ties to Atlanta, being wanted for questioning in connection with Mason's death.

In the third incident on Friday, at about 11:41 p.m., officers responded to a report of a vehicle collision in the 9400 block of Plymouth Street.

Holmgren said officers found a 30-year-old Hispanic man suffering from gunshot wounds inside of one of the vehicles. Paramedics responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

He said homicide investigators who were called to the scene determined that the victim was shot in the 9200 block of Plymouth Street and later collided with a parked car in the 9400 block of Plymouth Street.

Holmgren said the motive for the shooting is still under investigation and the man's name is being withheld pending notification to his family.

There were two shootings just before 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Holmgren said he has little information about an incident in which a 22-year-old man was shot and killed near the intersection of MacArthur Boulevard and 77th Avenue.

In the other incident, officers responding to reports of gunshots in the 4600 block of Fairfax Avenue found 20-year-old Samuel Walker of Oakland suffering from gunshot wounds, according to Holmgren.

Walker was taken to a local hospital but later was pronounced dead.

Holmgren said homicide investigators learned that Walker was possibly shot by suspects in a vehicle but the motive for the killing is still under investigation.

At about 10:49 p.m. on Saturday, officers responded to the 4700 block of Fairfax Avenue to a report of gunshots and vehicles involved in collisions.

Holmgren said officers found 24-year-old Melvin Hughes of Oakland suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics responded and pronounced Hughes dead at the scene.

Holmgren said homicide investigators learned that Hughes was possibly shot by suspects in a vehicle that was following him. He said the vehicle following Hughes collided with the vehicle Hughes was driving and the collision caused both vehicles to collide with parked cars.

According to Holmgren, witnesses reported seeing black males flee from the suspect vehicle, which was left at the scene.

Holmgren said investigators believe Hughes' shooting death is related to that of Walker's because the two incidents occurred just yards away from each other and were separated by less than eight hours.

The investigation into the incidents is ongoing, he said.

Homicide figures typically increase slightly in the summer, partly because school is out, and there tends to be more socializing. Hot weather is also a factor in agitating people.

As a precaution against violent crime, police will be concentrating more on problem neighborhoods in Oakland during the holiday.

Overnight shootings injure two teens
Two teenagers were among the latest victims hit by gunfire on the city's streets in two separate overnight shootings in Milwaukee.

The first occurred about 7 p.m. in the 7200 block of N. Teutonia Ave. There, a 17-year-old boy told police he was walking down the street with his brother when he heard gunshots and was struck in the buttocks. He was treated at released at Froedtert Hospital.

The second shooting happened about 11:20 p.m. when a 16-year-old standing on a porch in the 3300 block of W. Galena St. heard shots and felt pain in his forearm, then realized he had been shot. He was also treated for his wound and released.

There are no suspects in custody in either shooting, according to police.

The men, ages 19 and 27, were shot about 1:30 a.m. in the 2700 block of N. 60th St. There are no suspects in custody.

Three men were killed in two shootings in less than 24 hours late Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

In each case, what started as a fight ended with gunfire, police and witnesses said.

Sunday's killing occurred outside Dots Fashion, E. Capitol Drive and N. Richards St. Police and paramedics were called at 3:19 p.m.

According to two witnesses, the victim, identified by family as Willie McCollum, arrived at Dots Fashion after a phone call from his girlfriend, who worked at the store.

The witnesses, who said they were afraid to give their names, said the girlfriend got into a fight with a female customer, who was angry about having to wait in line. The customer also made a phone call, to a man who came to the store.

After they arrived, the man and the victim began swinging at each other inside the store. When they moved the fight outside, the witnesses said, the man pulled out a gun and shot McCollum, who went by the nickname Cash, in the neck. The man and the female customer then got into a car and drove away.

Police would not discuss any details of how the crime occurred and refused to disclose the victim's name.

One of the witnesses said she kneeled down beside McCollum and tried to stop his bleeding while they waited for an ambulance to arrive. She said he kept saying, "Just let me up," but that she refused.

By the time the ambulance arrived, the victim had died.

"They shot my baby," Brenda Rice, McCollum's grandmother, screamed as she pushed past police tape.

Rice said McCollum was 22. She said he grew up in Milwaukee and attended Madison High School and later the Career Youth Development School of Excellence. He liked to play basketball and was a whiz with computers.

Sunday's killing followed a double murder late Saturday in the 2400 block of N. 50th St.

Police said two men, ages 22 and 19, were shot Saturday night while fighting with two other men. Police refused to identify the victims and had made no arrests.

Police said the two men were fighting in the street with another man when a fourth man arrived with a handgun.

The fourth man shot the 19-year-old and 22-year-old multiple times as they tried to run away about 10:45 p.m.

The weekend's killings ratcheted the number of homicides in Milwaukee this year to 49. That's even with the same point in 2006, despite efforts that police say have decreased the overall number of shootings and led to the seizure of more illegal guns.

As of early May, police in Milwaukee had seized more than 1,000 guns. Police have also begun saturation patrols in high-crime areas.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said Sunday that he was angered by the "senseless violence" of the weekend killings.

"Personal responsibility cannot be ignored in this," Barrett said. " . . .when you have this incredibly easy access to illegal guns, and, for some people, the lack of a moral compass, that can be a dangerous combination."

Barrett said the city would continue lobbying for stricter state and federal gun control laws. "There are still far too many illegal guns on the streets of the city of Milwaukee," he said.

Two shot overnight on north side
A man was shot overnight after he got out of a car to secure a fuel cap, police said.

At 11:50 p.m., a couple had stopped their car in the 2700 block of W. Melvina after they noticed the gas cap was dangling loose, said police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz. When the 25-year-old man got out of the vehicle he was approached by a man armed with a gun. The victim decided to make a break for it and ran, Schwartz said.

As the suspect fired multiple shots, the victim's girlfriend drove off.

The victim was hit once in the buttock, but had nothing taken from him, Schwartz said. He was taken to Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare St. Joseph's, treated and released.

In an unrelated shooting, a 21-year-old male was shot in the leg at 10 p.m. in the 3400 block of W. Center St. after a dispute with neighbor over the use of fireworks. His injuries were not expected to be life threatening, Schwartz said.

2 shot overnight; both expected to survive
Separate shootings left two men in the hospital last night, including a 61-year-old who had been sitting in his home when he was shot, police said.

At 10:10 p.m. the 61-year-old answered his door in the 4800 block of N. 65th St., and was shot by two suspects who proceeded to take his money and flee, said department spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz. The victim's injuries do not appear to be life threatening, she said.

About an hour later, a man was shot multiple times in the 3800 block of W. Burleigh, Schwartz said. Police discovered three crack rocks on the victim, whose name police were still trying to determine, she said.

His injuries also do not appear to be life threatening, Schwartz said.

The victim is in critical but stable condition, police said this morning.

"We are trying to determine where this occurred," said department spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz.

An hour-and-a-half later, a 19-year-old male was shot in the back of the neck in the 3900 block of N. 76th St. The victim was treated and released from the hospital and was described by police as "uncooperative."

Two shot at northside club
Two men were shot and a woman had a bottle smashed over her head at a Milwaukee bar early this morning after an argument spun out of control, police said.

The gunfire erupted at Club Escape, 6263 N Teutonia Ave., at 1:36 a.m. It followed an argument inside the bar between a man and a woman that escalated into violence when the man smashed a bottle over the woman's head.

After the two were separated, the man walked off and made a call to a couple of people "to light the place up," Deputy Chief Brian O'Keefe said.

"And they lit the place up," he added.

The suspects came to the bar and fired numerous shots, hitting a 40-year-old and a 32-year-old man, O'Keefe said. Neither was involved in the confrontation that sparked the shooting, he said.

This is the second shooting in about a week at Club Escape.

The police are talking to potential witnesses and looking for the suspects.
